Because it's Sunday morning and I want to play Inquisition, I was thinking about who our party will initally consist of.
Cassandra and Varric I’m thinking will be there from the start. The Inquisitor trailer strongly suggests Cass finds the Inquisitor, and is there right from the start, and unless I’m mistaken, Varric is traveling with her, so naturally he'll be there too.
It’s the third one I’m stuck on. In the Lead Them or Fall trailer (0:21) you can see a shot of Cassandra and Leliana(?) approaching an imprisoned Inquisitor, at least, that’s what it looks like. But Leliana is an advisor… it would be weird to have her in your party and then the game say, “nu-uh.”
But that said, we’ve also seen in trailers what looks like a party consisting of Cullen and Morrigan, so perhaps Leliana will accompany us until we have a basecamp established, and from there we will be given Mass Effect 2 style recruitment options.

Remember that we didn't start with a full party in Origins either. Once we got to Ostagar we had Alistair and some generics and maybe dog if playing a Cousland.
The way I see it: we'll start with Cassandra (first warrior) and Varric (first rogue) since they are travelling together. My guess would be that Solas will be our first mage. I read somewhere that he would seek us out.

Perhaps Cassandra takes the Inquisitor prisoner after the opening because she suspects him/her of being behind the explosion (or knowing more about it than s/he lets on). If so, it would make sense for her to take him/her back to a stronghold where Leliana was also at, given that we see Leliana with Cassandra directly after she (Cass) interrogates Varric.
Maybe it happens as above and then the Inquisitor and Varric meet while both prisoners of Cass and Leliana?
I'm not sure who the next companion would be though. I would assume that it's a mage, but I'm not sure which one. Could be Vivienne, since we've seen alot of early footage of her with Cass and Varric. Could be Solas, given that he's a fade expert. It would certainly be right within the Bioware wheelhouse to have one of the early quests be a "find the expert who joins you" type of quest.

I'm inclined to say that Cassandra will be responsible for fulfilling Dragon Age tradition by kickstarting the party with a SW/SH warrior. I can imagine Varric being next, followed by Solas.

I would say its Vivienne. Varric is a rogue, Cassandra a warrior and Vivienne is a mage. This way the Inquisitor has one of each early in the game.

Unlikely. We'll meet Vivienne through a ball she is throwing for the Inquisition. There's no way she's going to do that until we have a bit of a reputation.

Very true. Maybe we'll shack up with some of Cassandra's mooks until we can recruit someone less... metallic?Remember that we didn't start with a full party in Origins either. Once we got to Ostagar we had Alistair and some generics and maybe dog if playing a Cousland.

Or maybe not. In DA2 we only had the 3 Hawke siblings until Aveline showed up. As I recall the Origins prologues each had the PC with a single helper and maybe some non-party NPCs. The mage was alone for a good bit of it.
Granted it didn't take long until we got other companions, but there is certainly precedent for not starting with a full party.

I think Cassandra, with Varric in tow, because she takes us prisoner. We meet Cullen and Leliana because they are part of the initial inquisition. And then Solas and Iron Bull - I think its plausible they were at the peace conference, Iron Bull as a spy and Solas as an interested apostate. Maybe Cole next somewhere along the way near the blast zone because he was a friend of Rhys and Evangeline and also interested in the mage-templar conflict. Perhaps we next get Sera, before we leave Ferelden for the first time? I'm thinking the Friends of Red Jenny are based in Ferelden and she has connections to the group so that's what I would assume. Vivienne after that when she throws the party that gets us noticed in Orlais, and maybe that's how we meet Dorian, maybe he's there too as an ambassador of sorts with info on the venatori and info on tevinter magister involvement in the breach. And then at some point, Blackwall. Don't know where he fits in right now, however. But that's my speculation, wrong as it probably is. ![]()

HN - Dog, Ser Gilmore (non-combat), Eleanor
M - Mouse (Fade), Jowan, Lily
DN - Gorim, two random dwarves
DC - Leske
CE - Soris
DE - Tamlen, Merril, Fenarel
Regardless of origin, you can get your fourth companion as soon as you leave Flemeth's Hut (either Morrigan, if you are a HN or Dog right afterwards if you didn't kill him earlier).
In DA 2, you have a full complement of companions as soon as you start Act I.

Leliana was probably with cassandra in haven or something so leliana is probably just there for cinematic reasons.
I would have to say i see the starting party being Viv, Cassandra and Varric.
Though i will quickly kick Viv out the moment i get a new companion.

I'm pretty sure we'll be starting with a temp generic character who'll ends up dying though.. Would be nice if it was a plot twist and that character doesn't die ![]()

Yep! it was in the writer's interview:
[DA]: How does she come to join the Inquisition?[MK]: Vivienne is not the sort of person who would sit back and watch while the world crashed down around her. The Inquisition is the only group even trying to stand against the chaos. So she resorts to the only logical course of action for a courtier: she throws a party for them.
That's the weirdest 'Let me join your group cose I care...' I ever seen buahahaha

There has to be a red shirt or temporary companion at the start of the game. It's the law when it comes to Bioware games.

I agree. I think Solas will join early (Before Skyhold), and will teach us about our powers.
