One of my all time favorite games.
Combat is kind of slow and clunky though. I prefer DA2's and Inquisition's combat. I prefer something more fast paced.
Doesn't help that I have it on the xbox so no mods for me.

Definitely one of my favourites. Even if the graphics/gameplay are dated, the story and characters are still so amazing and epic.

Yes!
The last "real" RPG I know of.
Sad they didn't properly fix it before it was abandoned.

Yes, yes, and yes. Great story overall, good combat & tactical combat, heart wrenching choices, grey-area villains & good people. The line between Hero & Villain is very thin in this game...

I love the game!
It may be old but it's still got great lore and I don't mind the slow combat to much. I love the character interaction and reading the codex's. It's also cool to paly the different origins in the game. I love the city elf and the human noble. Dalish story is ok, others I have not quite explored all the way through, I've started them all off though. Also love the tactics the game has. Much easier compared to DA:I

Just finished a play through of DAO+Awakening+Witch Hunt (with a male noble warrior who romanced Morrigan/followed her through the mirror) and rolled those decisions as my import save for DA2 and I gotta say I wasn't even in Kirkwall yet before I had already created another DAO character. A mage who betrayed Jowen in order to help Irving stick it to the Templars (despite the fact she agreed with Jowen and will become a blood mage herself)
I can't seem to stay away from DAO.

Origins is one of those games that you can play from time to time due to the richness of it's character and story writing. After 1400 hours of recorded play time I still find joy and excitement upon completion of the campaign.

LOL, I just finished a campaign as an extremely unlikable CE. By the time it was all over, the only people at the celebration were my father and Dog.

I am one of those unlucky enough to be effected by the no banter bug on top of all the other glitches and bugs that is ruining my experience of Dragon Age Inquisition. I've given up playing DA I and started yet another playthrough of Origins, and oh my god... This is a joy to play. I never tire of it. ![]()

Hell yes. It's not graphically as pretty as Inquisition or Dragon Age 2, but this is a masterpiece. Bioware kept pushing the bar up from Baldur's Gate to Neverwinter Nights to Dragon Age: Origins. Origins has everything in one place: A well thought-out story with choices that have consequences throughout the game. It is moddable thanks to a nice toolset. It had great DLC (Warden's Keep, Leliana's Song, Witch Hunt, Golems...). It was easy to use just using a mouse and keyboard. Replayability because there is no way to experience the entire game without trying a different origin story. Voice acting was done superbly. Our companions made us want to be their friends (yeah, a video game cajoled me to liking characters) and the developers were always posting and wanting feedback in return. In short, Bioware has a masterpiece in PC RPGs and that's not even up to debate in my humble opinion.

Inquisition has been a chore to play through and now it's not possible until they patch the game where CTDs won't happen as often. Origins only hiccup was Awakenings which was still a good story, but poorly executed.

Is there anything I should know about Awakening? I've played it many times and enjoyed it thoroughly, my only problem was Oghren being too obtrusive. Yeah, his constant comments about Sigrun were not really entertaining. But I loved the campaign. The characters, the skills, the story, the Architect conflict, the city/fort decision, the Nathaniel Howe hanging decision.
I'd just like to hear your opinion. Why do you think Awakening was poorly executed?
I may be wrong though. I play it mostly for Sigrun.

I really liked Awakening, but that Silverite Mine bug is a killer. I was fortunate enough to miss it on my first playthrough, but it hit on my second and I never finished it. My city elf wanted her mom's boots back, dang it!
Story wise, it works better on its own than as a sequel to Origins because of what mousestalker mentioned. I remember being very confused as to why Alistair wasn't present when he was still a Warden (and in a romance with my Warden, no less). I might try it with an Orlesian Warden next time I go through it.
As to the original question, I do still love this game. I just finished another playthrough, and I still enjoy it immensely. The Baldur's Gate series will always be my benchmark, and Origins is the game that's come closest to matching BG for me.

DAO is still so special. It hits that special spot in your psyche that makes it seem real almost. Over 20 play throughs and I like it more each time. This is the game I judge all others by.

Thank you for asking. Here is what I remember from my own personal experience. I jumped on the forums just a few times because I wasn't in the mood to bash my favorite developer. It was also EA's first full title after acquiring Bioware. Origins was almost of out of development when EA took over.
1. Preordered. I bought the game as a preorder and brought it home from Gamestop. It failed to launch. It was installed and Origins couldn't find it. Origin's customer service wasn't there at the time so I had to lean on Bioware's for help. It was a couple of days before a hotfix was released before I could get the game to run and be recognized as an expansion.
2. Incompatible with Warden's Keep. Official DLC not working with an official expansion was not expected. Warden's Keep clothing was not included or recognized by the expansion. I imported my character and he was stripped naked. Powers gained from Warden's Keep were not recognized. It was like Warden's Keep never happened.
3. It was made using the Origins system, yet my game kept CTD everytime I triggered a cutscene on the roads. There were some planned occurences while you traveled to different sites and for some reason, would crash. I was able to resolve this by reloading the game and then disabling Area of Effect spells on my warden.
4. The Fade. You have a full party and you're in the Fade with Justice. Justice becomes a locked character that means one of your party has to be discarded to satisfy the limit instead of just following you as a fifth wheel. Nope. I had to put Oghren in my backpack because we're in the Fade. Where the hell is he going to go?
5. The Black Marshes had a special encounter if you found all the parts to a dead dragon skull and made it whole again. Until the patch was released, there was a piece unobtainable.
6. Oghren was not easy to please. Even if you had 100 approval rating from him, being a great companion from Origins, he was giving me +1 for toys or drinks. I was baffled that we has happy to see me and still be like, "meh." He is at 50 when you encounter him and every gift given had already diminished values. Why?
7. Some of the plot contradicts directly with your previous choices made in Origins. I can't remember which... it's been a long time since I replayed the expansion, but I thought that it was completely contradictory to the premise of following your tapestry.
It was still a good attempt and one that was given a pass since it was the first under a slightly different regime after EA took over. There are many great points about the game, though. Your Warden Commander is freaking awesome. The Darkspawn are on the run and they have new leadership that isn't an archdemon. All of your resource finding to make the keep strong mattered (unlike in Inquisition) if you wanted to save the keep and the city.
The difference to me, was simply execution. Modding the game was overly difficult because of the lack of toolset support so the community had to wait on bended knee for help. Patches eventually fixed the CTDs, but not a whole lot of else. It tooks mods from the community to allow you to transfer your DLC stuff to Awakenings.
I hope this answers your question.
