In your own opinion, what did you like about each Mass Effect game?

I know these kind of threads have been done before, but I like to focus on the positive aspects of the games sometimes, not just the negative. And I'm not native english speaking, so don't expect my grammar in this post to be flawless.

Am I posting this thread in the right forum by the way?

In my opinion:

ME1 - Liked the story, lore, characters and atmosphere.

To me, ME1 was nearly perfect. I do not believe ME1 was flawless, far from it, but it was the game I liked the most in the trilogy.

I remember playing ME1 back in 2010 for the first time, and I loved it. The atmosphere, the different races, and the Citadel, it was all so grand.

ME2 - Liked the different hubworlds, some of the characters, and the lore.

First time playing Mass Effect 2, I hated it. In my opinion, it changed far too radically from the first, but after playing it a second time, I saw all the positive elements of the game as well, and now, four years later, I think Mass Effect 2 is a great game, but not as good as the first.

Legion, Mordin, Grunt, Zaeed and Samara, my favourite characters from this game. Omega, Illium and The Citadel, even though it's much smaller this time, are great hubs.

ME3 - Liked the Citadel and Omega dlc, getting most of the old crew from ME1 back, the interaction between squadmates, and how the war affected the galaxy.

ME3 did many things wrong, but it also did a lot of things right, in my opinion. One of them was definitely how the squad felt more alive than ever, and actually interacted with eachother, instead of just standing in the same old spot all the time.

Even though there was only one hub world, the citadel DLC at least added the wards back, the location I missed in the standard game.

In the Omega DLC, I got to revisit one of the most exciting places in the galaxy, even if it was mostly combat areas.

I also like how you can see the despair and sadness of the people affected by the war, and the feeling that nowhere in the galaxy is safe anymore.

It was interesting seeing how the war affected the citadel and the people that lived there. The news being all about the refugee situation and other dark things happening in the galaxy because of the reapers.

Some people probably found this a bit depressing, and I agree, but I think at the same time, it showed how horrible a war can truly be, and it showed why the reapers needed to be stopped.

That was my opinion. Now I would be glad to hear others.

In my personal opinion:

ME1: The plot (just don't look too closely) and atmosphere. Just the general feel of a galaxy of different races that do not always like each other but are trying to get along. The sense of scale and history of the galaxy in the Mass Effect universe.

And, at the time (since I was coming off a binge of different shooters), the unique combat.

ME2: The refined combat. Each class actually felt unique and equally powerful this time around. The unique protection mechanic. The unique weapons. With the different bonus powers, power evolutions, and bonus weapons, each class had unique builds and playstyles.

Also, a closer look at the galaxy only hinted at in the first Mass Effect. Squadmates felt like they had a little more personality this time around, even though they had about the same amount of dialogue.

Mordin.

ME3: The multiplayer.

I actually liked the so-called 'auto-dialogue'. I thought it actually made for better writing and conversations between Shepard and squadmates.

The level design.

ME1: Cruising a mysterious planet in the Mako, making it to the highest peak, and looking up to the sky.  I love that.

ME2: Everything but the Hammerhead.

ME3: Combat and Multiplayer.  The Rannoch Arc and everything before it.  After that I'm like 'bleh', and I struggle to finish the game.

First Game: I just loved it because it was the first space RPG I'd played on a computer. It had a decent story. Hale did a great job as Shepard. The characters were good outside of the walking codex entries. And it ramped up to a fairly well done ending, although the Saren hopper was pretty dumb. Shepard left a trail of blood. I shot Wrex, and sacrificed the Council, yet ended up with a paragon background.

ME2: Wow, I'm working for Cerberus? WTF? Oh well, Martin Sheen? Cool. It's Cerberus. We'll act like it. Hey cool, fewer stupid idiotic statements like "I thought asari needed other species to reproduce." But I do get to say "A bullet in the head solves everything." I know that now. WTF? Ashley hates me? Come on Ash, it's me. The Terminator - well even I was smart enough to figure out these things go inside of the ships like Sovereign. Duh. Great DLC, well except for Firewalker which is up there with Pinnacle Station - well worse actually. Loved the soundtrack. Much improved over ME1. Much improved gameplay - now if they could have gotten Shepard to stay in cover.

ME3: WTF? Shepard is stupid again? No wait. Everyone is stupid. What is the entry requirement for the Alliance military? Do you fail if you have over a 90 IQ? Push button Kasumi and Zaeed type dialogue?  Quelle lazy. The "autodialogue"? I really didn't mind it that much. Fun story. But what the hell is this? Dreams about a stupid kid? I was born in London you know. I was born in London. Something big is going down in London. I was born there. I was born in London. Anderson, you set me up. You drugged my drink and had me thrown in custody for six months, you bastard! Now you're supposed to be my father figure? F*ck you. Then Starbrat.

Well Multi-player was fun.

ME1:  The World-building.  This was the game that got me invested in the universe.  While things like the council, Citadel, Geth, and such all had parallels in other works of fictions, ME1 brought them all together in a new and exciting way.  The world was believable, and all of the aliens were interesting and made me want to learn more.  In ME1, I read every codex entry and planet description because I could not get enough of this universe.

Honorable mention:  The plot was just plain awesome, the twist about Sovereign and the reapers was phenomenal, and you were invested in saving the galaxy from the bad guys.

ME2:  This game was all about the squad.  No game before or since has made me care so much about fictional characters.  Every one of them had a fascinating backstory, and an enlightening loyalty mission that allowed you to delve into their past and motivations.  From badass mercenaries to religious assassins, this game had it all.

Honorable Mention:  Making choices feel important.  In retrospect, this is somewhat unfair.  ME2 was excellent at making choice seem huge, and I think this in turn set ME3 to fail in some regards, because every ME2 decision seemed like it would have a consequence, but almost all of those consequences would be hinted at to happen in the next game.  When ME3 couldn't deliver on all of them, I blamed it.  But at the time?  What a ride!  Do I keep or destroy the collector base?  What will brainwashing the Heretics do?  Will any of this come back to bite me?  In the end, a lot of this boiled down to war asset numbers, but they were always fun decisions to make in 2.

ME3:  Combat and Multiplayer:  I was skeptical of ME3 multiplayer, being a staunch believer that ME was a single player universe, but I was glad I was wrong.  The multiplayer was addictive and the combat was the best of the series, in both single player and multiplayer.  While the plot may not have been as good as ME1, and the characters weren't as engrossing as the were in 2, I always had a good time trying new power builds and weapons combinations and completely owning everything sent against Shepard or my Quarian Infiltrator and the rest of my multiplayer characters.

Honorable Mentions:  Citadel DLC:  Simply the greatest piece of fan service I've ever encountered, need I say more?

ME1: Space opera setting and ambitious world building. The story was perfectly adequate, containing some great moments, reveals, an interesting antagonist in Saren. There were some frustrating moments and characters, but overall it was a fun game outside of the combat and Mako driving sequences. Plus, launching enemies into space is highly amusing.

ME2: The cast of memorable characters. The best of them had arcs that tied into the historic, social, and political conflicts of the MEU, expanding on these ideas and introducing character elements as well as some fod for thought. Despite the set-up of a silly and occasionally frustrating central plot the Suicide Mission was a fun and rewarding payoff. This game is also highly quotable.

ME3: Some of the smaller character and fanservice moments. The DLC content was pretty great and I even think I saw an Elcor in one.

ME1: being able to explore a lot of planets, different environments with different hazards

ME2: squadmates, combat system overhaul, removal of the inventory system (finally!), interesting hub and mission locations (as opposed to reused environments of ME1)

ME3: the tone and setting of the game and its emotional impact, even better combat system, awesome cameos of ME2 squadmates (except Jacob who sucked in ME2 either lol), squadmates moving over the ship and interacting with each other, Javik :)

ME 1- that feeling at the very end when you walk out of the rubble. I felt like I had actually saved the galaxy. I stood with my arms raised in a V, controller still in hand and yelling... Who's your daddy!? I felt like I had won.

ME 2- after getting used to it, the actual fighting/combat. I also loved that it made me want to replay 1 again just to see how decisions would turn out- this is based on 3 not out yet of course.

ME 3- new characters and if played the way I did, validation that Garrus is my best friend

ME1 - Exploration and the sense of wonder in ME1 was amazing. Some of my favorite moments: Arriving at the Citadel for the the first time, becoming a spectre, the conversation with Vigil and saving the Destiny Ascension

ME2 - LotSB (best mission in the series)

Other things I liked: Most of the LMs were also well done (Mordin's mission was my favorite), Normandy crash site DLC, some interesting characters (Mordin, Samara, Legion)

ME3 - I really liked the dynamic Normandy, with the crew moving around and having conversations with each other. Even Shepard felt more alive to me and showed emotions

Other things I liked: many great moments with your squadmates and other NPCs (the goodbye conversations in London, Liara's time capsule and romance scenes, Garrus' s bottle shooting scene...even small things like the "Blue Rose of Ilium" or Khalisah's interview), the destroy epilogue (Hackett's speech, cheering Humans, Asari, Krogan, the squadmate slides, etc.) and some missions like Tuchanka (I cured the genophage), Rannoch (sided with the geth), Omega and the Citadel DLC (+party).

I have to say ME3 is also the best in the series as far as combat and voicework goes (Jennifer Hale, Ali Hillis, Courtenay Taylor, Keith David and Martin Sheen were my favorites). I loved the soundtrack in all three games, although they are all very different.

ME1: Ashley Williams and her backstory, walking underneath Sovereign's claws attached to the presidium tower, the Destiny Ascension, major Kirrahe.

ME2: Combat overhaul, the most complete experience of the (pre-Reaper war) Mass Effect world, the finest selection of mostly awesome characters, the suicide mission, amazing soundtracks, the Kasumi loyalty mission, the Miranda romance.

ME3: Combat and weapon selection improvement, Citadel DLC, Quarians returning to their planet, James.

ME1: Hard to pick a 'best' part here because the game grabbed me at the character creation screen, never let go, and because of that initial impression I'm still playing the trilogy. But... If I have to get specific, I'll say Virmire -- Saren, Sovvy, Kirrahe, Wrex, the choice, the bomb, hanging up on the councilors afterwards. Everything I liked about ME1 was in that mission.

ME2: Going through the Omega IV relay, and everything that came after it, and everyone surviving based on my blind luck choices, heh, and then basically giving TIM the finger afterwards. Epic.

ME3: The feels. So many highs and lows. For example: Watching Grunt take on all those reaperfied rachni so shep could escape, I got misty-eyed; I knew what was coming. I kept saying, "no no no not Grunt! Damn you, Bio!"  and even then, when he went over the cliff edge I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, and then... "Anybody got something to eat?" I cheered. I forgave Bio. Then I cursed them again at the top of the Shroud Tower. Damn, there were so many moments like that in the game.

Best overall: The Citadel DLC. Shocking pick, I know.

1: Story [even if it isn't quite as good as what nostalgia says it is, it is still the best in the trilogy], Atmosphere, the openness [choosing the order of Therum, Noveria, Feros, and Virmire], characters, the music, Bring Down the Sky, character customization

2: characters, atmosphere, side quests, Kasumi: Stolen Memory, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Arrival, dialogue, the normandy, the music

3: characters, emotion, story [not as bad as people make it out to be, but still not as good as 1's], Extended Cut {still disappointing, but good in terms of making choices matter despite what nay-sayers say}, Leviathan, Omega, ESPECIALLY Citadel , level design, all missions that aren't fetch-quests, conversation writing [I too am okay with some of the autodialogue because it removes the useless choices that ME1's conversations had a lot. Autodialogue is just too often], the Normandy finally feeling alive, the combat, weapon/armor customization, multiplayer, and music

Now, despite the size of these lists, ME2 is still my over all favorite of the three. I just love all three games for different reasons.

ME1: The story (still the best for me of all the three games), the universe, the lore, driving over enemies with the Mako, bring down the sky ... and then Virmire mission (dialogue with Wrex, dialogue with Sovereign, having to choose between Ashley and Kaidan), the final battle on the Citadel ... and coming out from the rubble at the end and .... Ash!!!

ME2: It's probably the one I like least, but still I loved some of the Loyalty Missions, the Suicide Mission and ... Mordin, I really like him

ME3: The combat (my preferred between the three), the Multyplayer, Javik, the more dynamic Normandy with squadmates moving to different locations, Tuchanka and Rannoch arcs ..... cannot say nothing about DLCs, still have to play them, but I guess I'll like Leviathan and Citadel from what I've read.

ME1: I loved the exploring the Citadel for the first time. It was like seeing a true Utopia. All these different races living together in relative harmony... It seemed so perfect, so wonderous, and so far beyond what we see from our humanity in real life. It took my breath away as a vision of an almost perfect society.

ME2: I've never cared about fictional characters as strongly as I have in this game. Not just the romance options either. The first time I did the suicide mission (had no clue about who to lead fire-teams) I took FOUR casualties, and I broke down seeing their caskets... :( It is THE strongest emotional moment I have thus far felt in the entire medium of video games.

ME3: Love the combat. If I had to be more specific I'd say the multiplayer. It made the game so fluid, so visceral, and best of all manages to feel so unique. It's (to me) a triple hybrid between three different genres. It's like the Role Playing, Real Time Strategy, and Cover-Based Third Person Shooter genres all got really drunk, had a three way, and this was the wonderful child. :D The RPG elements guide strategies, executing them in battle happens like an RTS, and its all packaged into a Third Person Cover-Based Shooter viewpoint. I LOVE how that all comes together, and I haven't seen it quite like this in any other game.

Honorable mention goes to Sovereign's incredibly intimidating Virmire speech, hanging up on the council, almost every renegade interrupt, and Conrad Verner  ;)

ME1: Perfect blend of old school rpg but with a scifi military esque blend. Great way to begin with deep mythology established. Most of all I liked the soundtrack and atmosphere. It really immerses you into the setting.

ME2: Excellent expansion of ME1. Explores darker aspects of the galaxy while introducing a ton of unforgettable characters and planets. I just wish we had the same team for ME3 because I liked ME2's tone and pace the most. Most of all, the challenge. Insanity on ME2 is nice in the way it encourages more tactical movement and squad utilization.

ME3: Really evolves and expands the gameplay. Shows why biotics are to be feared while making things more fun. Although slightly unbalanced, it feels great to have a Shepard who is nimble and dangerous.

In short, Setting, challenge gameplay. Blend elements of all three and ME4 could be hot.
