Why would we ever play it at all? The Inquisitor isn't an Orlesian noble, and has no stake in their relationships. The only reason you'd even be at the ball is to get help for the Inquisition, and I think just asking respectfully/doing whatever sidequesty favors are necessary would be all that we'd need to do.

To be honest - and this is coming from someone who hates double talk and politicking and eughh - I think when it comes to interacting with Orlesians... it's play or be played. I don't think we'll be able to walk into a room, honest and earnest and "simple", and not have it backfire somehow.

Not necessarily at a ball, mind you. But yeah.

It's a ball run by Vivienne, who is The Game personified. Here most of all, The Game will appear, for all of the reasons you just specified. You might be able to play it well enough to get some points, but you can't avoid it.

Or simple ignore backstabbing orlesian mage and focus on fixing things in ferelden and others as well on taking strongholds in orlais and when demons will start show at their parties and then they will be forced to beg for help then i will tell "obey or die" sounds like good solution as well.

But for that things would need to go in certain order.

But that's what I'm saying. People want to waltz in there all "Joe Goodguy" or... Grumpy McThreaten, but that is not going to get them very far.

I know and agree. I was just saying that you seemed to be unnecessarily qualifying your point in your first post.

Well, how exactly do you think we'll need to "ponce?" What exactly would we have to do?

Make friends and alliances, build resources. Having more friends (and more important friends) will make coercing troublesome nobles easier, or ensure that their "removal" will not be met with controversy, if need be.

Once the Inquisition has snowballed into a powerful organization you'll be able to take more liberties, but you need to take baby steps first.

Well, if someone has a problem with the Inquisitor, then he/she should complain about the tacky decor, tastless bouffet, kitschy dresses and so on...that should put those snobs into place.

Take it like a competition. If they complain, complain harder. Should get you some points.

I'm completely socially illiterate, so if it were me I'd probably just run around screaming and flailing because somebody wore the same dress as me. That seems like a very Orlesian thing to do.

When I say "you gotta play or be played", I say so knowing full well that I am the type to be played. :P

The way to handle this is to be a smartass about it, and try to smartass the person back when they try to smartass you back. (Which is something I'm not good at doing on the fly.)

Only the pawns ignore The Game.

Bring on the The Masquerade Vivienne - you'll be begging me for tips when I'm through.

It's okay. DAI will let you think which option to choose. It's polite like that.

Sounds cool. Might be a bit of a stretch with a Dalish warrior with only as much Cunning as the game won't let you have less than, but I wouldn't complain.

I intend on playing The Game at every opportunity I'm given. There's almost nothing I adore more than outmaneuvering an opponent with cunning or manipulation, and I certainly hope those moments are played up while at the ball and in general when in Orlais.

Well - let's examine what little we can.

Vivienne has thrown a ball presumably to what exactly?  Celebrate the Inquisition?  Petition the Inquisitor to join?

She's going to invite any Orlesian she thinks could 1st) Serve her agenda 2nd) Serve the Inquisition's agenda.

I'm REALLY curious about Morrigan and Vivienne's relationship at court... as I would find Morrigan, at first, to be horrible at the game - but quick to master it (which would be an excellent evolution of the character to be able to at least fake social graces).

I think it would be really cool to have Empress Celene make a momentary visit - or to visit, but then sit in a out of reach box where she can observe the crowd with her flunkies (and if you really work the scenario - maybe a meeting with her).

I actually could see Gaspard being there - as I bet Orlesian balls are neutral ground.

Who else is there all depends on Vivienne's agenda... more mages?  Less mages?  The Divine?

I could see Bodhan and Sandal there to possibly excite and entertain with "Enchantment!"  It might be a stretch - but perhaps she's interested in Sandal.  Nobility bring all sorts of oddities before court to ogle.

Teegan would be there I wager.

Shale maybe?  Talk about an oddity.  It would obviously be a long shot.  But someone like Shale would actually be a great distraction during The Game.

I really hope ALL of your "current" companions are at the ball.

Flemeth would be a crazy twist.  It would be amazing if a regal, beautiful woman introduces herself and talks with you... then Morrigan shows up and says something like:  "Come along mother... let's leave these poor people alone."  Or some such - without even referencing to the Inquisitor just "who" Flemeth is (of course, then you meet her later or something and she's the daffy o'le bat-brain she always is)

Whoever goes will tell Vivienne's story if - and that's how I'll play the Game and intuit not only what Vivienne "wants" - but how to either support to undermine that while using her for my own purposes.

I have a feeling that the ball will be the Dragon Age version of The Citadel DLC. My dwarf will be the first to show off on the dance floor!

I'm not very interested in "ze game", so long as we're not forced to wear fugly outfit I'll be happy. Besides imo you can't really get "verbally destroyed", some snob spewing fancily worded insults doesn't impress me

I hope it will be like Samara's loyalty mission in ME2, when you have to wander in the night club and find what you can do, in your own style, to catch Morinth's attention. This time you would try to impress the nobles to gather support, with Josephine or Vivienne coaching you, and with more options to think about, so it would be like a little puzzle to solve. You don't have to be a great Gamer if someone skilled helps you and if you rely on your strenghts and personnality (some will inspire fear, some will seduce the crowd, etc).

I loved the ball in The Masked Empire, with Celene and Gaspard doing their tricks...

I'd be down with that if we could completely ignore any advice and mess up the ball on purpose

Elves will probably get the worst of it... at least qunari have the advantage of being feared by most humans.  Elves are considered to be scum, and if the Inquisitor hasn't done anything to stand out by the time this party takes place, the nobles will probably remind them of that rather frequently...  I would assume that dwarves will have the easiest time out of the non-human Inquisitors, since they are generally well-respected by humans.  Although, if the Carta connection is public knowledge, that may complicate matters...

True Dwarves and Humanity end up as brosephs in just about every fantasy setting.

Almost brings a manly tear to the eye.

I'll just be glad if my female human inquisitor can dance with a few awkward suitors while iron bull gets increasingly agitated then finally he rescues her from another orlesian fancy pants by nudging himself forcefully in front of the highly offended man about to approach. "Inquisitor" he says gruffly, and she raises an eyebrow. "Bull?" She answers, unable to stop a grin. He shifts uncomfortably, which only adds to her amusement. "You... er... look like you need help." He replied, and before anything could be said, he took her tiny hand and twirled her skillfully out onto the floor. She catches her breath and looks up at him, flushed. "You better not be referring to my dancing..." There is a long pause filled with twists and turns, when the inquisitor loses her breath again. Iron bull pulls her firmly close to him, their faces centimeters apart. He smirks and growls, "not a chance..." the inquisitor is lost for words, and they continue to dance, beauty and the beast style!!!!
Heh... got carried away with my inner fanfic writer... sorry o_O
Sooo... those orlesian balls....

Eh being Grumpy McThreaten will get you plenty far when you're the only one who can close the holes the demons are pouring out of.

There will be limits obviously but the Orlesians face a cut off your nose to spite your face situation. The stand to lose a lot more than the Inquisitor if things go to hell.

But... that's logical!

Everybody knows Orlesians don't operate on logic!
