My Ignorance About Sexuality

 

I have a confession to make.

I am ignorant about sexuality.

 

I have little understanding on the wide spectrum of sexuality and have been bogged down with "labels". All I have done is unintentionally created a barrier between myself and others in approach to this topic. I have unintentionally made others into pariahs without realising. 

 

A few years back I did a poll on the previous forums that was poorly received for reasons which now is obvious but back then wasn't. It was flat out intolerable and insensitive thing to do. Most of the people on the current forums weren't around back then, but suffice to say that poll was the equivalent of saying "ay you! You're latino, you're black, you're asian, you're european, you're nope sorry I don't know what you are". Now imagine how rightfully furious people were.

 

I guess the real stinger for me was when I watched a bunch of youtube videos from LGBT groups and LGBT supporters where they talked about their experiences. Then I looked back and realised that my actions were less than honourable. Here I was thinking that I was progressive backing gay marriage and yet there are instances in my past where I have been insensitive. It's just not on. It just isn't acceptable. 

 

I am truly sorry for all the hurt I have caused. I must endeavour to be a better person from now onwards.

 

So I was wondering if perhaps a stuck in the mud kind of guy such as myself can be enlightened about sexuality.

I want to have some understanding of different sexualities so I can be supportive instead of causing offense.

I don't want to fall into the traps of bigotry and genuinely want to be a decent human being.

I would also like to know how can one be supportive of oppressed individuals, when they haven't experienced said bigotry.

As for the bigotry, its a bit of a strong word. I think everyone lacks understanding of many things, whether due to lack of exposure and experiences, or the effects of society on them. We've all done something at some point that we probably didn't even realize was a problem but we passed off as normal.

I haven't become aware of any, when people have made me aware of needs I've taken them into account. But that doesn't mean there aren't any incidents where I've offended someone in such a manner without knowing it. Then again diversity introduces such a complex set of concerns that I don't think anyone can reasonably account for them all - I just try to be a nice person and adapt where I can, and not ask people about things where I suspect there are liable to be assumptions that I'll make in asking that may be offensive.

I hate those who obnoxiously flaunt their sexuality and get butthurt when you don't kiss their ass and yes it includes every sexuality. 

 

But that's just me.

as a misanthrope i hate everyone equally. Because we are flawed and weak, full of contradictions, rationalizations, double standards, lack self-knowledge, and are just plain full of bullshit and the list goes on. We all contribute to one anothers suffering, both knowingly and unknowingly, its just a part of life. Before puberty i was the "ugly duckling" and am part of certain disenfranchised minority groups and now that i inhabit a far more pleasing physical body, associated with a degree of privilege, its like a stepped into a completely different world.

Why are you so worried about what other people think about you? And if you've hurt someone's feelings over the internet than that's their fault for having such thin skin, not yours.

 

I honestly couldn't care less about other people's sexualities or their struggles in life. What happens in their bedroom is their business and not mine.

You're heterosexual? Good.

You're both? Even better.

You're neither? Cool

 

It's all good.

 

What's not cool is "I hate everybody expect for those who fall under mine." That's never cool. Those people are ignorant fucks who're wasting my oxygen and stealing my wifi.

 

The world's too large for them to have a ten foot vegetable up their arse on something that doesn't effect anything what-so-ever.

I'd take out the struggles in life part but well said. I would say the first step towards not offending people is not to open up a poll and say "my goal is not to offend people like you."

 

In doing so, you have already sequestered people into a camp, me progressive, you sexual strange-O, lets meet on a common ground. The way to meet someone halfway is to literally just meet them, you don't open up a dialogue that is inherently discriminatory from the get-go.

When I was a kid I considered gay people to be weird but present-day me has no problem with 'em no sir. I judge people whenever they're cool or assholes.

I don't hate anyone on basis of their sexuality/race, just a shame that i myself have suffered from bigotry over my own sexuality
