I was ignorant when I was a kid up to 17-18 years of age. I've been guilty of using the slang, but usually in a different context like for example calling people gay when they used an overpowered strategy to beat me in Age of Mythology. It was a big thing back in the day (it may still be, not sure).

 

Turned out that a lot of the people I consider friends are queer. So I got up to speed fast. It was intimidating at first tbh. I'm a introverted person and for most of my teen life I was shy and asocial. Never payed much attention to matters of sexuality and I just considered straight to be normal with my arguments mostly limited to "biology". Now for all intents and purposes, I don't make a distinction between people with different sexual preferences.

 

I'm still not well versed into the social matters and hardships different minorities face but to be honest I don't care much about it. If it was up to me all people would be equal but I'm not big on activism. If a friend faced a problem of this kind I'd offer help, but that's my limit. I have problems of my own.

How so? The poll has some pretty mixed results. And the BF (and previously the BSN) is well known for its left-leaning tendencies.

 

Left leaning does not make you immune from violating your own ideals in the heat of a moment.

And I'm supposed to believe that you NEVER got sucked into that trend?  Also, you never got annoyed with one of those caricatures? Maybe. Since I only know one of the Bioware Forumites in person, I don't know whether or not those who voted "Never" are lying.

I just blindly accept the results of the poll. If I brought into account the possibility of lying, then I'll end up distrusting every poll ever.

I think the people in the "Yes: on a few occasions" and "Not sure" polls are the most truthful.

I'm pretty sure that if someone has been ignorant for a fair amount of time this past decade, chances are that he used the slang more times than he admits. As Jalil said, gay was the go to insult for pretty much everything. It was synonym for "unfair", "uncool", "manipulative" and more. 

 

That's what I voted. It's in my nature to act like a jerk as a tool to keep certain types of people at distance. Doing this for a long time, chances are that I offended a number of people, even unintentionally. 

 

An episode of South Park that uses the word **ggot for a motorcycle club pretty much describes my case ^^

Probably by some definitions since I'll use gay as an insult if I think it fits (not as a general slang term but when the intent is to put down someone who isn't), although only when I'm bantering rather than really trying to say something unpleasant to someone I truly despise. I think equating that with bigotry though is politcally correct nonsense.

Sometimes. However I never said in my lifetime something offensive to an person of said preferences. That being said, while I try my best to be as respectful as one humanly can, I also don't feel forced to like or approve of other people's preferences that I don't share. I think keeping it to myself is enough.

 

The only thing that **** me off about it are those generalizing people that think every member of some majority is an evil opressor that needs to be reminded of their bigotry and go out of their way to show how much disdain they have. I just try to go about my business. I wish they could do the same.

I will openly admit to having bigot-like thoughts about lesbians after having been on the receiving end of bigotry from them because I am bisexual.  Oh and I have participated in some bigotry towards straight men... you know every once in a while.

Yes most people fall under this banner but that doesn't make it acceptable.

Bigotry is a word that places people who use ignorant remarks in the same category as Adolf Hitler.
I would like it if this term has levels of Bigotry.

This is an outstanding failure in the English language.
This word is far, far to broad. Yes all of the above examples are unacceptable.
However some are flat out depraved! Others are reprehensible! Some are deeply insulting!
When you have a word that doesn't differentiate between a tool that makes unacceptable remarks and a dictator that kills millions, then that word in my opinion is a failed word.

 

Whenever you call someone bigoted, unless you outright clarify what kind of bigot they are, then you are basically saying they're no better than Adolf Hitler.

 

 

I want to reiterate what I said. All 15 examples are unacceptable. None of them are justifiable, nor are they excusable. However some are worse than others.
