I never really understood where most of Thedas' nations stood on homosexuality.

In origins, when Zevran asked you if you were insulted after complimenting the male Warden, or when Leliana asked you if you thought it was weird for her to find a female PC pretty, I sorta got the feeling that it was frowned upon, somewhat. However, none of the other companions or characters ever remark on your PC's orientation.

The in DA2, you have to save one of Anders' past lovers and the fact that he's a man isn't mentionned. There's also the thing with Seamus (The viscount's son) and Ashaad the Qunari who have an implied sexual relationship, there again, nobody mentionned it.

Is sexual orientation really not an issue in a world where people are persecuted for having pointy ears or cool magic powers?

I'd think that The Chantry, The Qunari or the Tevinters have an opinion on the matter. Or even the Human Nobles for that matter, who might not want heirs that couldn't give them children.

Although I can see the Antivans, the Dalish or maybe the Tal-Vashoth being more open minded.

As a homosexual male it's a topic i'm interested in and I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter? Have you spotted hints or remarks that I didnt?

Think it might come up now that we have two companions that identify as gay?

i don't think the people of thedas care, and you could have also mentioned that Duke Prosper from mark of the assassin, son was gay also (might have been cause i played as a male hawke, haven't played through mark of the assassin with a female hawke yet)

It's not much of an issue in Thedas. Leliana is an andrastrian and is bisexual. Heck, and if your a noble, people don't care who you sleep with as long as you provide an heir. As for the Qun, they may be a bit more oppressive on the subject. Seeing on same sex doesn't boost their populations.

In Ferelden it's regarded as a bit unusual but not "bad". In Orlais (and presumably Antiva) it's regarded as a quirk of character. As for Tevinter, Dorian is discriminated against not necessarily because he likes men, but because he won't settle down with a woman and make a bunch of mage babies with her.

Cyril is bisexual, since he'll take interest in Lady Hawke as well.

To address the OP: The Dragon Age Wiki does a good job covering the topic of sexuality in Thedas.

I really don't see how anything about Ashaad and Seamus was sexual. Given the structure of the Qun, it doesn't seem their way to indulge in such a dalliance. As for the overall tone regarding homosexuality in DA, I think it seems like it's normal enough but still somewhat not entirely accepted with enthusiasm by everyone.

In Dorian's case yeah...its not that he likes men it that he won't make Mage babies with his strong magical blood line. Heck, Denarius abused Fenris in that regard and no one in Tevintir bats an eye

I don't understand why some people say that minority sexual orientions aren't an issue/stigmatized in Thedas. There's plenty in the games/books which contradicts this. Zevran is wary of potential homophobia, Gamlen says some homophobic things, whatever. Some nations (Tevinter) are more homophobic than others (Orlais). World of Thedas has some information on this, which I believe has already made its way into this very thread anyway.

Why would you think the Dalish would be more open-minded than others? I don't have any information one way or another, but wouldn't procreation be of utmost importance to them? I mean they could still be fine with hot gay recreational sex, good for them. I just don't have any reason to assume they would be.

The Qunari have breeding programs, so I'm pretty sure recreational sex is off the table. I doubt same-sex emotional attachments are an issue, though... as long as you comply when it comes time to get down... >___> Still, I doubt Ashaad was free to pursue the kind of relationship Seamus (might have) wanted, not just because of attitudes towards same-sex attraction but also 'cause of race and culture and all that.

I always wondered about the Dalish. Like, say you're a male hunter who hooks up with Zevran. On the one hand, you're not contributing to the elven race by producing elf babies. On the other hand, at least he's not a shemlen LOL.

I think part of this is out-of-setting: Bioware wanted to have a character-consistent moment for Zevran - who would totally hit on you - in the context of real world homophobia. And so that would require qualification that wouldn't make sense in setting.

My guess is that views on homosexuality differs on where you live. Maybe in places like Fereldan it isn't as common an occurrence as it is in Antiva so that's why Zev asks if it bothers you that he likes men. I don't think it's thought of as a big deal, just different. Like you mentioned, the only people I think would have a problem with homosexual relationships would be the Qunari since they view sex as a way to produce babies and nothing more.

If you have read The Maksed Empire it's mentioned that the reason Empress Celene's relationship with Briala is frowned upon is because she's an elf. I don't think anyone cared that she was a woman.

There is a codex in World of Thedas summarizing attitudes towards homosexuality, and it can basically be summed thusly: no one cares, as long as you meet the obligations of your station. (Nobles must produce heirs, etc.)

The only place where homosexuality is prohibited is in the regions controlled by the qunari, and they prohibit ALL sexuality. Romantic love is considered an aberration amongst the qunari. Your so-called "feelings" do not serve the Qun.

Homosexuality seems to be regarded as a quirk but noble society would still expect you to marry a woman and produce heirs. Its unclear what the stance of commoners are on the matter. Herren and wade are obviously a gay couple that own a shop in Denerim so it seems its more excepted then in many places in the real world.

Homosexuality is very likely not anymore common than it is in real life hence theres probably some awkwardness toward the subject simply because of unfamiliarity. Theres no TV or other mass media to expose people to gays and show that theres nothing wrong with it after all.

I think the main reason you see hesitation in the s/s flirts from Zevran and Leliana is because the game was produced in 2009. It's showing it's age.

Homophobic comments from Gamlen are also something I don't think would make it into a 2014 BioWare game.

But they happened, and they're canon, so now they have to be worked into the lore... when otherwise, there's no reason for homophobia in Thedas (other than, possibly, the importance of bloodlines and heirs; see: Dorian, or, why making Alistair bi could've been veeeery interesting :P)

Quirk of character is all. Provide children and you're good.

People are more likely to look at you with disgust because your screwing an elf or a dwarf then a same sex partner.

Ferelden is slightly more conservative in its values, which is acknowledged in WoT. That said, they still don't care. Homosexuality is an oddity in Ferelden, but it's not frowned upon.

Yeah, I think World of Thedas said homosexuality among the upper classes is frowned upon in Tevinter because of the whole "must continue the magical bloodline" thing, but it's actively encouraged among slaves. I don't know if this means the lady slaves bang the other lady slaves so the slave population doesn't explode... or if magisters are expected to "get it out of their system" with slaves and marry an opposite sex partner.

Homosexuality is not frowned upon.

Most thedosians dont care unless your a noble then its a character quirk(orlais) and if done in public a rude act at worse(fereldan).

Even tevinter is the same just with more "limits" they dont really care so long as its descrete and done with favored slaves.

General rule with all nobles is "breed successors first. Then you may dally with whom you choose"

It would make a lot of sense for elves (dalish at least) and dwarves to frown upon homosexuality considering they're dying races.

The latter. "Do what you want with the slaves, so long as you pop out an heir at some point."

Actually, Homophobic comments from NPCs might still be in bioware games because being supportive of the LBGT community does not mean their aren't bigots of all types in Dragon Age games. This does not mean that those bigoted views represent the common view the people of thedas hold.

With Dorian's background, I wouldn't be surprised if he did encounter some homophobia. Telling a person that what he likes to do in private is fine as long as its not his public face is still a form of homophobia in my eyes.

I think it's been said before on this page but the Qun doesn't forbid romantic relationships, they simply forbid the expression of those relationships through sex.

I think Zevran asked about it because not ALL societies in Thedas fully embrace it. Some can be more limited in understanding such a thing. As for Gamlen, I just took him for an ass that remembers "the good ol' days" and, in an attempt to make himself feel better about his wretched existence, slurs pretty much anyone that is different, in his mind.
