Well, there's Zevran's reaction when a male City Elf sees Shianni and co. again. When he hears about your disastrous wedding, he says something like, "Did they find out you were--" and the toolset says "the answer to this is gay".

Dunno if that means much, but it's there.

Ha! That line is a bit hilarious. I remember that line now. I totally misinterpreted what it meant.

On a tangent, I've been thinking about something. With DA:I moving toward greater representation, sexuality is moving closer to an actual aspect of in-setting identity. And I'm not sure how to think about that in terms of the world Bioware crafted, because in a lot of ways the very inclusive attitude seems to move against a definite and clear identity for people as not-straight.

I'm not sure how that works, setting-wise. On the one hand, it seems like each culture should have their own attitude toward identity (and own construction of it). On the other hand, in theory, at least, most places are relatively egalitarian about it (what we know about Tevinter aside, and my own view that the Qun should pragmatically be pro S/S relationships just because of how they allocate their people).

So this is all a bit all over the place, but I'm curious about people's views.

On a personal level, I kind of hate how they're moving towards making it a "thing." I liked the fluidity of DA2 -- and I don't just mean b/c I could romance whomever -- but I liked that none of the other characters cared who you were with or what you liked (in terms of sex/gender).

Zevran's hesitation over hitting on another guy kind of messed that up for me (I played DAO second)... it was like, oh, that's a thing in this world? Bummer. That's just like our crappy world. :(

So that means of course that I love the world of ME for that reason... nobody gives a crap who you're with in terms of sex/gender.

Oh, of course, in DA2 there's the Gamlen line we were all talking about awhile back. I hate that line b/c it also pulled me out of "fantasy land."

^I agree that it's a very fine line they walk.

It isn't just Gamlen. There's also that one conversation with Anders.

^LOL I don't remember that line! But yeah it was a shame you couldn't just tell your dad and your bride that you're gay! I mean they could've still worked around that... you could've gotten a lecture about how important it is to continue the elven race (something you could disagree with but still be forced by your dad to go through with it, etc.).

Instead you evidently had to keep your sexuality hidden, which says a lot about the world =\

Like I said before, I think when Origins came out, they weren't too certain on what stance Thedas would have on people having an attraction towards the same sex.

It was weird, though. Like, I knew when I picked City Elf Origin, that I had a specific character pinned down for him, even his sexuality. But when I found out that he had to get married, I just picked the closest options befitting that of how a homosexual (who's intent on pursuing only same-sex relationships) would most likely pick. Which there were.

I think that now how Dragon Age has a more clearer view of how sexuality is perceived in the Dragon Age universe, they would've written this scene differently to accommodate for that. Not scrapping the whole "needing to get married and start a family", though, since that's just part of alienage customs, but probably exploring more dialogue options for a character you wish to envision as homosexual.

Which one?

It's the one where Anders asks if male Hawke is uncomfortable or if male Hawke is bothered by the fact that Anders has been with men.

Can't forget diplo male Hawke asking Fenris if it was too strange to be with another man, after their first night together...

Only ever seen that on YT as I tend toward the snarky options. Dick jokes for everyone!

Oh yes!! You're both right. I hate both of these lol -- ESPECIALLY the post-coital remark to Fenris! "Sorry, babe, forgot to check and see if you're okay with dudes before we, you know, banged."

I'm so in love with this thread btw. I wish there were a way to show off our PC in game or in the keep.

But yeah, my tastes tend to be closer to the Blackwall/IB type in build even though I'm built more like Solas (maybe even shorter than that). What can I say, I like being...uhmm...covered...? HAHA. And my PC's based on me are usually mages, sometimes rogues.

Then when I make a character for the BF, he's a warrior and tends to romance the smaller guy. Except Zevran. I couldn't get into Zevra, and only did it for the achievement.

The existence of the lines from Zevran and Anders makes me believe that homosexual relations in Thedas aren't quite so accepted as the codex may lead one to believe, or perhaps more likely, that it was pandering to the straight bro gamer.

That one was just confusing.

Most confusing was Anders asking if him being with men bothers Hawke, right after male Hawke flirted with Anders. As if it was an escape route for someone who mistakenly hit the heart button.

I think that's got to be it. Although people misrepresenting the massage line from Zevran is a bit ridiculous.

Really? I'll have to go back and replay. I just couldn't avoid not hitting the troll option in that convo, so I never actually saw the flirt.

Male Hawke tells Anders he has a nice body, then Anders says that Karl was his lover, then Anders asks if him being with men bothers Hawke, and one of the options to respond to that is "yes."

Zevran's hesitation over hitting on another guy was done for the benefit of the straight guy audience. He was essentially asking the *player* for permission to hit on their male character.  That's why it seems to clash with the lore concerning homosexuality in Thedas.    Same with Leliana and female characters I believe.

I don't remember the timing triggers for Zevran (what I mean, when the question came up). As I recall we had pretty flirty dialogue before that?

This is the impression I got as well and I found it very annoying. Hopefully they would avoid crap like this in DAI.

He's only flirty when you stop his assassination attempt if your Warden is female. The male Warden will receive a hint that Zev has been with men at the party camp, and then has to ask him 'what he fancies.' After that Zevran pretty much outright asks male Warden if he is offended if he said he fancied him.  Then the warden is presented with basically a toggle to remove any hint of male attraction that Zevran may have ( and since Zevran only shows same sex attraction for the male Warden, and no other male, he goes on to only show attraction to females) for the rest of the game.

Here's the start of the party camp convos, although the vid shows the player choosing to start a gay romance with Zev.
