I totally disliked the relationship between Celene and Briala :
1 - Celene seemed so dependent that it sickened me. It's like she desesperately needed Briala to the point that she couldn't live her life without her more than a few days.
2 - I so dislike rulers who are so easily influenced by their lovers in the dark, to the point that their politics is only motivated by selfish interests to please one person they date when their " reforms " can affect thousands of lives. This is what I felt during this story. Briala mostly just wanted to help her people, but just the principle made me despise Celene, there. Of course after Celene might think for herself and could have changed her opinion about elves, but geez, sex and feelings happened and that's all it needed for Briala to decide the agenda of Orlais. That quite pissed me off.
And of course, all the rest people talked about that made it even worse. I thought toward the end of the book, Briala, girl, if you give another chance to Celene in this book, I don't ever want to hear about you. That would be just too ugh for my taste and my health. She killed your family, lied to you for twenty years, while making love with you every day, pretending that nothing ever happened.
I totally support people who want to see happy lesbian relationships in the franchise. But nope, not this one. There is nothing to fix. If that's what folks want, more power to them, but the only happy ending for me is at least Briala free from Celene's shadow.
