See, I just view them getting back together as the mistake. Bioware would basically be OK'ing an abusive, exploitative relationship. That just makes it worse.

Yes exactly. I'm not exactly fond of Briala but even I was glad to see her get out of that mess.

There are plot-relevant straight relationships that go just fine, like Aveline/Donnic and Rhys/Evangeline.

Rhys/Evangeline I'll give you that one, Aveline/Donnic doesn't really count because it needs Hawke's involvement to start or not even happen

I actually do think that Bioware has a problem with tragic or dysfunctional S/S (more visibly, lesbian) relationships in Dragon Age.

In this case, I think Briala returning to an abusive partner would only worsen that.

The focus should instead be on making new S/S relationships that are as stable as Donnic & Aveline.

I didn't read Asunder so I can't comment. But I will say that Aveline/Donnic is not really plot relevant. It's like the Cammen/Ghenya example I brought up earlier in the threat: it's a sweet, endearing and healthy but overall irrelevant relationship and we should have those too

I don't see how it could possibly be worse.

I admit that I may sound lunatic, but I'm genuinely hurt by all of this and I don't really see a good way out other than to make it better, and have what's formed not be abusive.

But they won't do that. Briala's love life isn't important enough to the main plot for such a subplot to be used. It'd inevitably be left hanging.

Regardless of what anyone else says, I understand your sentiment. :)

Bioware so far has (1) had two super visible and plot relevant relationships where (2) the relationship turned out to be, basically abusive and (3) one of them culminated in body horror and rape.

That's really bad.

As I see it, right now Briala is at least free and single. That's good.

I wouldn't call it good, just better than horrible.

You don't see how approving of abuse just to have a lesbian relationship is worse? Or even going back into a relationship that was abusive just because? Really?

Worse than creating the abusive relationship in the first place?

Are lesbians immune to the abusiveness we've seen all over Thedas now?

I think so. IRL, abusive relationships exist. But helping people get out of them is a real problem, and people stay in them and end up brutally hurt or worse.

I totally disliked the relationship between Celene and Briala :

1 - Celene seemed so dependent that it sickened me. It's like she desesperately needed Briala to the point that she couldn't live her life without her more than a few days.

2 - I so dislike rulers who are so easily influenced by their lovers in the dark, to the point that their politics is only motivated by selfish interests to please one person they date when their " reforms " can affect thousands of lives. This is what I felt during this story. Briala mostly just wanted to help her people, but just the principle made me despise Celene, there. Of course after Celene might think for herself and could have changed her opinion about elves, but geez, sex and feelings happened and that's all it needed for Briala to decide the agenda of Orlais. That quite pissed me off.

And of course, all the rest people talked about that made it even worse. I thought toward the end of the book, Briala, girl, if you give another chance to Celene in this book, I don't ever want to hear about you. That would be just too ugh for my taste and my health. She killed your family, lied to you for twenty years, while making love with you every day, pretending that nothing ever happened.

I totally support people who want to see happy lesbian relationships in the franchise. But nope, not this one. There is nothing to fix. If that's what folks want, more power to them, but the only happy ending for me is at least Briala free from Celene's shadow.

They've been disproportionate targets.

Then TME is bloody garbage either way. At least the conclusion's been reached.

Fine. But I don't see good odds for Briala finding new love, so it's not a good conclusion.

I've always wondering how much that is the result of Bioware wanting to feature more LGBT characters in a prominent relationship, picking F/F because dudebro's go nuts when it comes to M/M.

I seriously doubt it, because genderswapping Rhys and Adrian and having a lesbian relationship with Evangeline would have been trivial. Tragedy and betrayal in lesbian relationships are just easy tropes.

How? And what does this have to do with starting an abusive relationship up again?

In this regard, every single lesbian relationship in DA so far has ended badly. None have ended on a positive note.

as has been noted earlier in the thread, few relationships at all end positively in Dragon Age

Every single one? As in there's Legions of lesbian relationships in DA and every single one has failed. Or there's two and both of them involve Orlesians, who have never had good relationships with anyone, regardless of orientation. Plus I haven't seen most heterosexual relationships last outside of the player control, so I don't really get the point.

I would like this as well. Preferably something equally as much in the spotlight too.

There's also Branka/Hespith. And I don't mind relationships that require player intervention to keep, such as Aveline/Donnic, but we don't even have those.

Also, Rhys/Evangeline for another successful straight one.

What'd be fun is to maybe have a matchmaker quest and have the couple be gay.

I disagree. Outside of the playable character, we haven't seen a lesbian relationship end positively at all. And yet you still have heterosexual relationships that do rather well or don't end in tragedy. I'm not all up in arms over it like Xil is, but it is a noticeable trend.

sadly true. I hate to think BW(one my favorite companies and people who helped me come out) would have a negative biase
