All I know is I made a thread asking for it and according to Allan I was 'disrespecting the LGBT community'. Which is strange since I was asking for s/s marriage as well.

hmm thats doesnt like his normal posts.
But i think he maybe ment that asking for things just cause x groups have it doesnt it should be forced on x group just for "equality".

But i lack context on the post so idk if he ment it like that

So what I'm saying is, if Thedas doesn't have that immense history of misogyny the way we do, would marriage have evolved as something that represents commitment between two equals... and not just a baby factory for a powerful man?

Because if so we would see husbands and husbands / wives and wives on Thedas, and we don't :(

Yeah for our history ^^ Which is why it's also rooted in misogyny to some extent; powerful male --> find virgin female --> put future male heir in (no longer) virgin female --> profit.

But Thedas doesn't have to be like that.

Right in Thedas it's Powerful Noble -> Find fertile/virile spouse with decent claims -> Put/get future heir -> Profit.

Except that it is like that for the nobility in Thedas. Ferelden, Orlais, and Tevinter at least run by the same game - do you have a viable heir?

But just for the nobility, and is that for every country? (I guess so)

So common folk are just emulating the nobility? If the Chantry has no opinion on homosexuality, then why are marriages not performed between s/s couples? Or does the Chantry only see marriage as a vehicle of procreation?

Pretty much, it isn't so much misogyny as it is practicality.

Noble Houses need to continue to be viable.

It doesn't need misogyny though to still exhibit the same structure in Thedas. In Orlais, the most powerful woman is a lesbian Empress, but she still needs a child to keep her line on the throne.

Yeah so perhaps DA's writers envision Thedas as having similar patriarchal historical roots as our world. Hence marriage for an heir (and the practice of the wife taking the husband's name: transference of property).

If the Chantry isn't going to voice an opinion on the subject i'd really advise just stirring away from their stance on the issue as it isn't documented period.

Because Thedas isn't the 21st century western world and the idea of marrying for love AND in a manner that can never produce offspring would be very confusing for them.

Well, considering the vast majority of leaders within Thedas world, excluding the White Chantry, have been male, then yes, it is a very patriarchal world.

But marriage exists for reasons of legitimacy... does it matter who the father of Celene's hypothetical child would be?

Legitimacy was always a sketchy business in DAO, what with Anora being able to take the throne (commoner background) or possibly Alistair (bastard).

The Couslands seemed very loving; but they also had two adult children and a secured line of succession.

I honestly think they don't even give a hoot so long as you keep sending donations their way and still believe in the Maker.

Are you sure or are we just projecting? Thedas isn't medieval Europe, either. It's a fantasy world with its own history. And the Chantry isn't the Church.

I agree, though I think that's an example of an arranged marriage couple who simply came to love each other very much versus a pair that married for love.

I just wonder if a couple went up to a priest and asked to be married, and they were two women or men, what would her reaction be?

1. *smile* How wonderful! It's lovely to see love blossoming in Skyrim Thedas.

2. *confused* What? Only men and women marry. Why would two women/men marry? You cannot produce children, and the Chantry recognizes marriage as a union that exists to produce children.

3. HEATHENS, LEAVE THIS SACRED PLACE.

:P

Yes, I'm sure.

Unless Gaider or someone else with God Tier writers cred comes out and says otherwise.

Even if it IS a fantasy world Thedas is still centuries behind us on social progress and WE are just beginning to come around to a more open definition of marriage now *as in within living memory*

I don't think it'd be two or three...unless they were nobles, which would complicate matters a lot more.

lol I don't think it would be three for sure

I wonder if she would be confused though. But why?? Why aren't regular Joe s/s couples asking to be married? Why is that not part of Thedas' traditions?
