It didn't even have to be a bunch of mage babies, just one so he could say he did his duty for his family and ensured it would go on and have an heir.
From what I've seen most nations don't care about people being homosexual unless you are a noble, then it's expected that you'll marry someone of the opposite gender and have an heir and even then the public won't care if you continue seeing your homosexual lover as long as you are discreet about it like you would be normally with any extramarital affair.
This gets me thinking about marriages in Tevinter, I wonder if an Altus mage can marry a Soporati non-mage, they are both of differing social castes and the fact that she is not a mage means the chances of them having mage children is slimmer.
I also wonder if after a particular homosexual Tevinter married a wo/man and had a mage child, could he/she break off the marriage to be with their true loved one?

That'd be social suicide on both counts. Not to mention that I'd expect the rest of your family would probably kill you.
Now, if you are an upper level magister like Mae, then you might have a chance at making it work, as you'd be strong enough that most wouldn't think twice about messing with you.
A normal Altus though would have no chance.

But would they truly? in the first case, the chance of siring mage children is still there and in the second case, your duty of producing a mage child into the family is done.
Some people might not agree with your decision, but I doubt your family would kill you for it.
Why even have marriage to create mage babies in Tevinter? Why not just form formal contracts with members of the opposite sex... have your whole upper echelon culture built around "sex" rituals and what not, solely for the production of mage babies. But keep love and marriage separate?

I wouldn't be too sure, since it is a very big part of their culture. Breaking the cultural norms like that would certainly not foster good will with your family, even if you did beget your mage child and "do your duty".

You are probably right. I am just thinking about it after reading Dorian's background, his family's main problem with his homosexuality is that he would never be able to carry on the family legacy, they disagreed with him, but I do not think they threatened to murder him if he did not go back on his ways.

Lol, it's a different world. It plays by completely different rules. In this case, duty would come before love.

Oh, I agree that he wouldn't necessarily get murdered by his family. They more or less consider his non desire to marry a waste, as he supposedly is a prodigy when it comes to magic, making him a highly desirable candidate.

That is marriage.
There is probably cultural pressure to have as many mage babies as possible. Just because you have one mage child doesn't mean that child won't die before reaching adulthood. You need spares to carry on the family in the worst case scenario.
They don't need "as many mages as possible", they just need (or rather want) the perfect mages. The strongest and the smartest. And quantity does not mean quality here.

His family's main problem not with his sexuality but with his attitude and him being too smart for his own good i.e. not wanting to live like all the "decent folks" in Tevinter do. He rejected everything they're stand for. Even IF he had chidren, they would've been hardly what his parents wanted to see in their heirs.
I would imagine that the Dalish and Dwarves would be very against homosexuality on the grounds of population.
Tevinter is obviously against it - as for why forced marriage in Tevinter, I think the answer is obvious. The contract is between two houses - the child inherits the power of two unified houses. Why would love matter at all - have it on the side and keep it quiet or will knife the little dandy in a back alley somewhere. Tevinter is the hardest of cores.
The Qunari probably find it unproductive and therefore likely forbid it.

Did someone say "Sebastian"? How about "Alistair"?There is probably cultural pressure to have as many mage babies as possible. Just because you have one mage child doesn't mean that child won't die before reaching adulthood. You need spares to carry on the family in the worst case scenario.
Just a cultural thing. I assume it's the same reason Alistair can't pop out an heir or two with some random noble lady and then go marry the (non-HN) Warden. (Or something. I'm... not entirely sure where I was going with that.)Why even have marriage to create mage babies in Tevinter? I don't think they have a problem with homoromantic relationships between two of their people, but I agree that they'd find the act of homosexual sex itself unproductive.

Wouldn't they actively encourage romantic relationships between partners in their jobs? Love makes people happy and also raises morale it makes individuals better at their jobs, something soldiers, craftsman and otherwise will need if they hope to succeed in their assigned roles.
I honestly do not think that they would discourage homosexuality or romantic relations in the Qun.
And if your perfect mage dies in childhood, you are stuck without a mage child to carry on your bloodline.
You never know if he's perfect till adulthood more or less.
And, your bloodline can be caried by non-mage, but that's not the point. Non-mage just can't be a big boss figure in Tevinter, that's all. It's not about heritage per se, it's about power and climbing to the top of the food chain.

Romantic friendships are fine, yes. Though I think they find that breeding/sex in general isn't something to be used except for procreation.
Romantic relationships "can" cause problems though as they promote emotion - and not always of the good variety.
I could see harsh reprimanding for ANY (gay or straight) Qunari that allowed his romantic relationship be a detriment to his job performance.

Sounds like the absolute worst idea.

Obviously they'd treat such thing harshly. But I don't think they'd outright ban them.
