Romantic relationships "can" cause problems though as they promote emotion - and not always of the good variety.

I could see harsh reprimanding for ANY (gay or straight) Qunari that allowed his romantic relationship be a detriment to his job performance.

It just seemed to me that a society that places such huge importance in an inanimate object (Sten's sword) that they would kill him if he returned without it, would also encourage it's members to protect, care for and look after one another as much as possible, but things like that often lead to developing feelings that are more than friendship.

Oh, I'm not saying they wouldn't encourage it so long as it's healthy and happy - but I just imagine them cleaning out unhealthy relationships quickly.

You two aren't in love anymore?  Okay... you, Par Volen... you Saheron ... now GO.

Obviously they'd treat such thing harshly. But I don't think they'd outright ban them.

I believe the Qunari ban expressing such things via sex. They do not ban having the feelings themselves, I don't think. In fact I think I recall hearing that Sten falls in love with a Warden who is friendly with them, insofar as the Qunari understand the concept of love.

Yes. In our society. Not theirs. You're assuming they think the way we do, and clearly they don't.

Truly? Sten falls in love with our Warden? I do not remember getting any vibes from him, he seemed to care deeply about my Warden as a friend for helping him recover his sword, but I never felt like his feelings extended to anything more than friendship.

Oh, I agree that he wouldn't necessarily get murdered by his family. They more or less consider his non desire to marry a waste, as he supposedly is a prodigy when it comes to magic, making him a highly desirable candidate.

Yeah, it's just, why marriage? I think traditionally marriage is a heteronormative patriarchal institution... so unless Tevinter has a similar past, it doesn't make sense that it would feature so heavily in their culture (imo).

That's just it; Qunari love is really just a more caring level of friendship, even if he feels as strongly as Leiliana, Zevran, Morrigan, or Alistair seems to. (If I understand correctly.)

You might be right, it just seems counterintuitive to encourage something like that without encouraging the other.

Aren't they a patriarchal nation, I do not recall a single archon being female, it is never mentioned even in The World of Thedas.

Does it have to require such a past though? We are talking about an entirely different world. It might seem weird to us, but Imperials seem to accept it, for the most part.

They're not strictly patriarchal. It's just that there has never been a female Archon that we know of. That doesn't mean there couldn't be one in the future.

The Archon is the leader of the Black Chantry, not Tevinter. Or am I thinking of something else?

Marriage has existed in some form or another in virtually every human society I can think of. I don't know why Tevinter would be any different.

I think she means just telling the Warden, not necessarily having sex with him or her.

No, the Archon is the political leader, the Black Divine is the religious leader. Two different people.

My mistake then, I always assumed that the Archon was considered to be a sort of president to the nation of Tevinter, I understand that it is ruled by a council of senior mages, I just always assumed that the Archon is the one that holds the most power.

The Black Divine leads the Black Chantry. The Archon is the leader of the Imperium.

So maybe marriage was originally an institution that grew to foster love and fellowship (instead of procreation) ... hmm, I'd just like to see what occurred to corrupt it into being what it is today in Tevinter.

When I create a fantasy world I try my best to dismantle/deconstruct my understanding of past institutions so I'm not just copying Western history. Does it always work, probably not; I'm sure I'm not as good a writer as I think I am

No, not really. The Black Divine, as a pretty damn powerful mage, holds enormous weight as well since he controls the Imperial Chantry.

I hid the post.

It's a Senatorial Magocracy with the Archon ruling over them.

Sure, I wouldn't need a love scene or anything like that, but you know, those feelings would arise eventually, after the game (assuming they stayed together, and assuming both are sexual individuals).

That reminds me, it was talked about here on the BSN a few years ago, but did you guys know someone wrote a fanfic about Sten boning their Warden... then they changed all the names and stuff and actually published it??

Given the nature of love as the Qunari are trained to feel it, what is there to tell?
