mages and ranged companions attack animation bug

i don't know what's causing this bug.. they take one shot then swing their weapon around 2-3 times then take another shot, how do i get them to attack consistently?

 

i have all my companions set to attack whoever iss attacking aveline, and the ranged characters set to cautious (so they run away when attacked in melee) because most of the time this meant that she was holding aggro and it was safe to attack them, but this still causes varric, merrill, and anders to not attack properly, they will fire/shoot once then swing their weapon around several times as if the animation is trying to play through but bugging then attack another time.. this also interrupts how long it takes for them to cast spells based on tactics because the bugged animation simply can't be stopped

 

any help will be appreciated

Try setting the ranged characters behaviors to ranged instead of cautious. Because according to the behavior options cautious causes the character to only attack when directed and avoid enemies entirely.

i figured this would work, but now they don't run away from melee attacks, which is a problem..

 

confirmed this by switching back to cautious mid-combat and they started bugging again but running away

That's the draw back with the ranged behavior, they will attack from range but some times their AI don't respond well to melee. You may have to keep track of their placement on the battlefield occasionally. But with cautious they will only attack if directed by you otherwise they will not attack period, it's not a bug, it's just how the behavior operates.

cautious says that if none of the custom tactics are applicable, then they won't attack without my direction, but i have attack tactics in there which they do follow but then it screws up after one attack and then only the animation without an actual attack plays several times.. i think this is a glaring bug

so is there anything else that can explain why they behave this way? if it was as you say then they should simply not attack and not go through half the attack animation several times anyway, which clogs them up mid-battle and causes no small amount of frustration
