This might be a technical kind of question but hoping people that do coding can help. I've always been curious to know why this is so so some information would be helpful.

 

If an MMO has all the graphics assets and character data on your PC how hard would it be to include a single player or offline mode? Also if all the data is on the client's PC why do you get massive lag sometimes if its only instruction data moving back and forth?

 

Or would that main .exe that is in the game folder need to be totally rewritten to eneale such an "offline mode?"  Is that what would be needed? Can someone explain?
