Mass Effect and Dragon Age had it all. Yes there are things I hate in those games, but they offer replay value, which is a big plus.
What do you seek in games?

Hot ladies with big boobs fighting each other, sometime in swimwear. Mass Effect can't beat that.
I actually wanted to buy the game just for that, but that's about it. still prefer Killer Instinct over DOA.
Mass Effect is a richer game

A good storyline of sceince fiction with decent characters and well-escalated events. And a decent plot. The Mass Effect Franchise has them all though the third game could use some work.

When I was younger it was mostly for fun. Now as I'm getting older it's more for having a reprieve from the usual craptastic dealings of my days. That can come from a Bioshock, or Tales of ... game, to some Yu-Gi-Oh, or old mega Drive games. Games are like that old friend who accepts, and is always there for you no matter how much you f*ck up.

Funny enough, my friends are the only reason why I play DotA, DotA 2 and HoN.

I think for the most part it's immersion in a custom story. I can enjoy all types of games.. I mean, my first love of games was at arcades when I was young. That's just pure gameplay. And I can enjoy railroaded stories as well. But I like personalized stories the most. So RPGs, Adventure (even old text adventure) have always been my preference. This is something games do best. If want to be railroaded, I almost always think a novel or movie will do it better.

Exploration, big boobed women, violence and epic music. With these things you can make bingo awesome.
Agree with everything except Violence ![]()

Solid, entertaining and challenging gameplay, with a good story (good plot, good characters). Replayability is a factor as well. I can't stand extremely linear scripted games where the gameplay is always the exact same everytime you replay it.
There is a reason why Halo and Mass Effect are my two top gaming franchises of all time.

Story for the main part. Though sometimes for a challenge to test Myself, gameplay, atmosphere or just something to kill time, and take My mind off the world. But mostly for the story and or funness level.

Depends. For example...
In strategy games:
To crush my enemies, to see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women.
JRPGs:
To defeat evil with the power of FRIENDSHIP.

I guess the same as JRPGs.
It's kind of hard to find a blanket goal for the reason I play games in general. Sometimes I just want to command and conquer while other times I want to enjoy a good narrative.

RPGs: First and foremost, the ability to create and play my own character. It is a definite plus if I can create the whole party. Beyond that, I look for interesting settings that are at least somewhat grounded in reality, and good game mechanics, particularly with regards to combat (I prefer combat on the fast/brutal/realistic side of things, with a good heaping of tactics). Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale have thus far come the closest to meeting all of those requirements, but (unsurprisingly) I've not yet come across what I would consider a perfect RPG. Dragon Age: ORigins also hit a lot of them.
RTSs: Good strategical gameplay, obviously. I'm also extremely fond of warfare at the tactical level, so that is almost a must. If they are set in historical times, which they typically are, I'm most fond of the middle ages and before; I'm not too wild on gun combat, I simply don't consider it as interesting. If not set in the real world, then I'd like a very believable and consistent setting. Mostly I prefer ones that do have a historical setting. I suppose all told Medieval II: Total War is my current favourite.
FPSs: Good, fun gameplay. Shooting things and having a great time is why I play shooters. I prefer them to be more on the wild and crazy side, personally, with a preference for the sci-fi types; Unreal Tournament 2004 is my favourite one, though I'm also quite fond of Half-Life. I suppose this is probably the category I'm least serious about, in the sense that I don't care as much about internal consistency and such things with regards to shooters, and I'm often fine with them being on the wacky side of things -- although if they do have a story within the game, I then care more about consistency and plausability.
Other: Whatever strikes my whim, really. I can't explain that very well. There are some games that I love that I don't like almost any other game from the same genre as (Lemmings is one of my favourites, but I generally dislike puzzle games). I do like Commander Keen/Duke Nukem style side-scrollers from time to time, but I don't like all of them. So, aside from the main categories I like, it looks a bit random.
As for still playing games, unless I actually didn't like a game the first time I play it, I'm probably going to play it again eventually, and possibly even reasonably often. Many of the games I mentioned above are decently old by now, and I still play them.

Well, as much as I want a game with a decent storyline, I never actually pay attention to the story. I just haven't got the time nor the patience anymore. The only time I've done that in a while is with DA:O, but I had no interest in all the Lore. So you can just suck it, nerds! (I jest, calm down)
DA:O is probably the only game I have truly immersed myself in for quite a few years; in that I actually cared about the characters and whatnot. The Tomb Raider reboot was entertaining and I am looking forward to the next instalment (For the combat more than anything else) and I'm enjoying Destiny quite a bit. Though the continued recycling of missions and locations is starting to wear a bit thin.
I guess it's pretty much what a lot of people are saying; immersion, longevity, decent plot and believable characters. Not too bothered about graphics as long as it doesn't play like a pile of d*ck.
