Actually, Shepard meets three (four) very different fates in ME3's ending, one of which is survival.

I do not envy the development team who gets to clean up this mess, that's for sure.

Yet they seem perfectly fine. Enthusiastic, even. Funny that.

No Shepard dies in all but one outcome.  Charcoal briquette

An easter egg in the final one indicates Shepard might survive

Your perspective on fate is rather narrow.

And yes, DestroyShep survives.

He breathed and moved. I'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt and say that is Shepard surviving. They didn't show him dying after the breath scene, so it is equally possible he stayed alive, and thus him living does count as an outcome

The only endings he truly dies in are Synthesis and Refuse. Control he lives on as the new guy in charge of the reapers. May not have his old body, but his mind and spirit live on. I don't consider him having his mind and spirit transferred to something else killing him. He just doesn't wear the same pants

Maybe some of you guys and gals in here should have a funeral service to get over Shepard's death.

Yup.

You will, so I guess that's one sale they have guaranteed.

Everybody who's still here on the forums whining about the game, or praising it, will buy it.

Don't underestimate the power of the shiny.

Shiny by who's definition?

If they tell me MENExt will allow people with MEHEM to keep that as thier personal ending going in, that would be shiny to me.

If they say the Reaper war will never ever be referenced beyond "Yeah it happened.  How we won is not important"  Maybe that would be shiny enough.  Maybe

A full-on "The trilogy never happened" story, well, it won't be all smudged up by Walter White's fingerprints, so maybe that would be shiny enough.

But a bright Red, Blue, or Green shiny?  No thanks.  I prefer games that don't make me feel like sh*t

My perspective on fate is limited to my senses.  My senses show me Shepard burning to death (a brutally painful and gruesome way to go).

Shiny by who's definition?

By anyone's definition, if it resembles the previous games.  Tough talk will get a lot less tough as the shiny approaches.

Obviously, that logic changes a bit if they went to an FPS, an RTS, or an MMO.

Yes, a very emotional perspective on fate, a concept that goes well beyond emotion.

And Shepard doesn't actually "burn" to death in any of the optimal endings, so your senses might need some recalibration.  The one ending where s/he might actually burn, Shepard survives.

With ems lower than 3100 and destroy is picked, sure. Above 3100 and destroy is picked, she lives. Mine is currently in Vancouver having drinks with Samantha

Probably, but only after the game's been out for a while.

I'm very hyped about DA:I but I've resisted the urge to pre-order that game, at least for now.

Shepard doesn't die no matter what you do in the first two games.

Well, the stat of the second game, yeah, but that's a different kind of wtf  ;)

Like I said, 2 was a reboot - new beginning, new team, but that's artistic integrity for you, isn't it?

Maybe eventually, but I think most will sit on the sidelines waiting to see which team is playing, the artistic integrity types, or those who've learned you make much more money by putting out a game that's fun and exciting team.

Well, considering "artistic integrity" has been around since ME1 forced players to choose between only Kaidan or Ashley in a Sophie's Choice situation, and since ME3 was fun and exciting, I'd say you can expect more of the same.

That's a healthy attitude. I don't think preorders are the main part of the game's income and if the game is fun and interesting, I think they will more than make up for those preorders.

I was greatly hyped for ME3 but resisted the urge and followed with my usual scheme of getting games only after 1-2 months after release. Then all the ending controversy broke out and I decided to wait it out. Played with EC already installed as a result :)

Actually, in Sophie's Choice she sacrifices one of her own children, her own flesh and blood, and I don't think Shepard fathered either Kaiden or Ashley so that's a bad reference.

Hahahaha!  They're all Alliance flesh and blood, Dave, and Shepard's their matriarch.  ;)

(But no, I don't agree.)

I think you're putting too much stock in this being "a story about self-determination", because it's also a story about sacrifice. Always has been.

Amen !

Normandy, does it ring a bell ? The Spaceship itself  tells the player this won't be an easy ride and he/she's about to lose a LOT of good people.
