That doesn't take into account the number on ME trilogy sets which contain all three games so in reality the game did sell a lot of copies in the end.The flood of returns and exchanges after the backlash hit probably didn't help though
Feeling a bit lost after the end

And don't forget that 2GB EC / DLC that was pumped out free to everybody in the world, that was a major, unplanned expense.
On the bright side, because ME3 failed to perform as expected, Bioware has something to prove so I would expect ME-N to be comparable to a 'DAI in Spacem' with some serious multi-planet exploration and combat.

I'll believe that when I see it.
After DA2, there was an actual dialogue of sorts with the team on these forums where they asked us "where did the game go wrong for you?" I got none of that sense with ME3.

That's true, and I wish they had talked to us. Maybe discussion on DA2 was easier because it had to do with various elements of the game, so many people were able to comment. ME3 on the other hand had one story element at the end, so only the writers would have been able to comment. Then again, I don't understand why taking criticism from DA2 was ok, but when it came to ME3 it was all " No No, artistic integrity, we won't discuss or explain our choices."
We can only hope they took criticism and fan reaction to heart like they do every game, and focus on making the next one better.

Aside from frustrations with the ending, which some were addressed with the EC, the issues with DA2 weren't of the same nature as ME3.
ME3 sold well, was well-reviewed and, for the most part, is considered a success outside of the ending.
DA2 sold poorly (that's close to a bomb), was BioWare's second-worst reviewed game, and was relentlessly trashed on a wide scale for its confined narrative and dire lack of polish.

ME3 also saw copies returned and exchanged in huge droves (not that EA cares, the distributers are the ones that have to eat that cost)
And ME3's backlash actually dwarfed DA2's backlash. And not a cool dwarf like Varric.
Amusingly, a big part of DA2's complaints was also the feeling of helplessnes in playing Hawke, how little agency the player has over the protagonist. I'd say ME3's ending problem was that. Greatly magnified.

It was well received by critics and believe it or not players, it won nermorus awards including GOTY so I'd say it performed rather well. And don't forget that 2GB EC / DLC that was pumped out free to everybody in the world, that was a major, unplanned expense.

Less well received by the audience. And they're the ones who put down money for the games.

I'd say that the majority felt it was pretty decent, it wouldn't win any user choice awards if it wasn't.

We've all felt that at some point during our own playthroughs.
The ME trilogy offers a wonderful experience, and it's still my favourite series. Play the whole thing all over again to reconnect with the characters.
Try buying Kasumi and Zaeed's DLC for ME2, and Citadel and Leviathan DLCs for ME3. Play the whole thing again with the DLCs. Leviathan is a great addition if you want to know more about the lore of ME, and the extra two character packs brings in new conversations and experiences. The Citadel DLC is a DLC of just reconnecting with the characters one last time. That's really the whole purpose of that DLC, so check it out if you haven't bought it yet.

The Extended Cut was unplanned.
But the budget for it was not. Either the budget for it came from trimming already planned DLC, or from a DLC that had not advanced beyond the planning stages.

Hey there, so the discussion goes on, but I will slowly withdraw from it. I played Dragon Age (as some of you mentioned), but I have to say that it wasn't quite as cool as my ME experience. I liked the story, I liked the characters, but it didn't had that lasting impact nor the dynamic between the characters. I'm in the middle of Dragon Age 2 right now and I'm stunned by the fact that Bioware did quite the same as with ME2. More Action, less RPG. Of course it's not the same because there are no main characters returning to the story.
In the meantime life goes on and stuff, so I'm having a truce with ME and its ending. But I will replay it, and maybe I will come back to my post here one day. ![]()
Until then, l wish you all the best! Thanks for a vivid and mature discussion! Thank you for understanding words, comfort and helpful thoughts when I needed them!
Have a wonderful christmas and a great start in 2015!

I guarantee you that some of the budget for Extended Cut came from cancelling "Alternate Appearance Pack 2".
No way on earth would they name an alt appearance pack "Alternate Appearance Pack 1" unless they were going to eventually make a second one at the time
