Should Dragon Age have Ultimate Spells?

I know one of the problems people had with the first game was that mages were 1 man/woman wrecking crews, given enough time to set it up and a mage could cast combo spells that would sometimes set off bigger spells that would be game changers if not encounter enders, like Storm of the Century.

Yet for me this has always been a part of high end fantasy role playing. There are just some things that can't be undone, and by that I mean the idea that a master wizard can call down the fury of the gods themselves and mop the floor with a bunch of mooks. I'm not saying these kinds of spells should be easy to access, cast or even end major battles against bosses who are meant to challenge you, but having them does seem like a trope worthy of considering. I mean for most any mage the idea of having a signature spell that embodies all their years of practice, study and most of all applicable use (in this case offensive decimation) is the height of magecraft.

What do you guys think?

I think there will be some offensive Focus spells (Limit Breaks)... that might fit with what you have in mind.

I hope so. Otherwise what's the point of playing a mage? Glad they introduced an all-difficulties friendly fire option though. As devastating as a mage's powers are there should really be a counter-balance that doesn't involve nerfing them in combat.

And hopefully there will be 'ultimate spells' tied to the focus mechanic (Storm of the Century, Mana Clash, Haste, Group Heal, Earthquake, ect.)

Well, the information about skills has changed a bit in recent weeks, but we've seen Haste in action (Hinterlands demo) and we've been hearing about Group Heal for months now... I am going to assume that those are still in the game.  Beyond that, there has been speculation about Firestorm and Blizzard being elemental Focus spells, but like I said, recent changes to the skill trees (or at least, revelations of the latest build) has called that into question.  However, I really can't imagine Focus powers as being purely support skills based on how difficult it is to build focus (cross class combos, and possibly dealing/taking damage as well)... I expect several room clearing abilities to go along with the support/healing spells... unfortunately I don't think we're going to know the specifics of the skill trees anytime soon... they have been very careful to tell us next to nothing about that...

There is also some speculation about Mark of the Rift being Focus-based, but that's not a magic spell, so it's kind of irrelevant...

Huh... I just realized... I hope that any offensive Focus spells are easy to aim since I'll be playing with friendly fire on... :s

Mages as support bots are boring, especially with only eight skills at a time to play with.

So yes.

It is surprising that you chose an anime clip over a video game clip. You could've chosen any of the end game abilities from Final Fantasy. It would be nice to have a spell like Ultima or Flare.

I chose it because it captured the idea better than a ingame spell from another video game. Note the last comments in the video, "I know i said a common spell wouldn't work but.,.." that hidden hinted emphasis that Dragon Slave wasn't a normal spell, but rather was possibly overkill.

This (and the thread title) made me think of the Armageddon spell from the Ultima series.
About as "ultimate" a spell as could be.

Or Götterdämmerung from Bard's Tale III.

Ah, I'd love spells like some of the top tier ones from PS:T. Nothing quite like opening a dimensional portal through which a giant magi-tech cannon fires...

Although I could quite happily live with Dragon/Giga Slave. As long as the potential drawbacks of the latter were accurately modelled...

To say the truth, there were games about slayers where such animations occur (not that well defined  but exists). And even, dragon slave is not a real ultimate for Lina Inverse. For ultimating for her, you should speak about Giga Slave:

Dragon Slave and it's city busting power wasn't the point of the post, it's what's said toward the end of the video that was the point. Common magic, is fine a good for the routine battles, but a mage spends much of their lives studying to control vast amounts of magical energy, at some point it's safe to assume they would have at least attempted to create or master a spell that goes beyond the common fireball, or firestorm/blizzard.

You assume such magic exists. Maybe Firestorm is the extent of what a Mage can do without Blood Magic.

Also, Focus effects create the same concept. They seem like the "oh s**t" button you whip out when you are desperate.

Except none of the focus stuff we've seen has anything to do with offense, group healing, is pretty much the only one i can remember hearing about. Also existing content has shown that isn't the when it comes to what is the ceiling for magic in DA.

Shapeshift into a High Dragon

Opening Rifts and Summoning Hoards of Demons

Rising a Army of Undead

Every Spell Combo in Dragon Age Origins

Destroying an entire Church that was as big as the Viscounts office/Guard Barracks.

Moving an entire Village into the Fade.

Shapeshift into a High Dragon  -  Flemeth is the only creature ever to do that on camera. We have no proof she's mortal (in fact we have a lot of proof she's not)

Opening Rifts and Summoning Hoards of Demons- Blood Magic

Rising a Army of Undead- Blood Magic before it was retconned with the Necromancer spec.

Every Spell Combo in Dragon Age Origins- I'll give you this one. I'd prefer them bringing back Spell Combos over poorly balanced "Ultima spells" any day.

Destroying an entire Church that was as big as the Viscounts office/Guard Barracks.- The result of Alchemy, not pure magic.

Moving an entire Village into the Fade.- Blood Magic.

Also, none of those effects are offensive either. Storm of the Century is essentially the most powerful destructive effect Mages have ever been seen to pull off in game, so arguing that they should have even more powerful effects "because Lore" is weird.

I really really really liked how they did with the magic in the first game where you could mix spells to make new spells/effects or improve effects. I was a bit sad when they had removed that for DA:2 and really suprised as to why. I mean in this day and age and seeing as how they could do it in the first game it should be simple for them to do something like this.

They scrapped them for Cross-Class Combos. So everyone could get in on the action.

This is the part of the thread where ten people jump in and complain that Powerful Warrior and Rogue effect "break immerison" and "aren't Lore friendly".
