Am I the only one that gets repeatedly mangled by this spell? My last attempt at a no reload ended when the mage on the 2nd level of cloakwood mine cast it. It ricocheted off the tiny hallway a million times and killed my 95 HP monster of a blackguard almost instantly, and 4 other party members. Xzar got interrupted trying to cast web in the room which normally does the trick, but he got hit with an arrow this time.

I mean wow, every time an enemy mage cast this spell, at least one of my guys dies, every time. The hallways are so tiny in BG that the spell bounces back and forth like crazy and just fries your dudes like nothing. I will do whatever it takes to cheese enemy mages to death because I know this spell is coming at me if I don't.

It makes no sense really but that's the way it goes, I'm afraid.  Look for it there & in just about any place you come across a Mage in a place where no Mage in their right mind would cast a Lightning Bolt...they will, often killing themselves.

I mean, I use Lightning Bolt VERY carefully, even outdoors b/c it might hit a tree & come back & kill my PC.

It's funny, I use AI settings for all my NPC's (not my PC).  Mage's will never cast a Lightning Bolt, Fireball or the like, even if you set 'em on Wizard Berserk but the game coding is set so that enemy mages will let'em fly...even if it kills them too. Stupid.

You are definetly not the only one having issues with this spell in BG1, Buttafook0. It's definitely my number 1 reason for any character deaths in the first game. Its behaviour is often completely unpredictable, the damage can be huge, and often times, there's not a whole lot you can do but hope and pray if the spell is successfully cast.

In a no-reload game, I ALWAYS give my PC the boots of grounding as soon as I get them. I also started to constantly carry potions of absorption with me, to drink them during any emergency. One way I avoided lightning bolt ending my first successful no-reload run was just having the PC stay very much away from the party if there are traps or a mage nearby - even though I got 2 entire partys chunked via lightning bolts, in the end, it all worked out.

It's definitely best to kill enemy mages before they can use this spell, though that's hard somtes, because the script of the mage you mentioned is basically "Improved invisibility", "lightning bolt" iirc. However, you can use backstabs, aoe-spells (fireball from potions and necklaces won't get interrupted and are very good in this specific room) etc. to get around this. Otherwise, there are always hard counters like potions and the 4th level divine spell to protect yourself from electricity - and if you really want revenge, play a Priest of Thalos, use storm shield and lightning bolt all of these enemies yourself!

Spells that silence mages can also be helpful, as can poisonous arrows/weapons that interrupt spell casting.

Puk gets good milage out of his lightning bolts… you can sometimes lure a target into a doorway and zap him half a dozen times. Of course putting up protection before playing with these bouncing betties is recommended.

In my current game Silke killed herself with Lightning Bolt. THis was not intended. Because she had fought Karlat, she was not in her usual spot. I was actually trying to get her to kill some of those that I was "suposed" to be helping. Since my character was evil, I thought getting Silke to kill some of them would be appropriate. It didn't work!

Lightning bolt combined with Minor globe of invulnerability in a tiny room/space in ridiculously overpowered.
