do you prefer a default name or a default last name?

I mean in all Bioware games, they usually go by the default last name but this makes it kind of silly.

I mean characters inside the games call all other characters by their first name but only yours by your last. It is especially weird in DA2 when you have your siblings with you and yet they still call u Hawke but your siblings by their names. I mean for all we know, they could be talking about the other Hawke. At least Shepard was unique.

Hope Varric will make an-inside joke (like he always do) in DAI.

PS: I know it is impossible in current technology to make them address your customized first name but just wondering, which default is better.

Default last name for sure.  The first name is the one that is most personal so I would always want to customize it.  Though, I will certainly be glad if they ever manage to make it possible for the first name to be spoken by party members.  It seems likely that it might happen someday.  :D

Where I live people go by their last names all the time, so I didn't think it was weird for there to be Hawke + Bethany/Carver. They're younger, after all, so they don't get to use the family name as a nickname. :P

I'm fine with a default first name if I'm playing as a pre-set hero, but not when I can create my own... in that case, a default last name is preferable.

I honestly prefer just being called by titles like 'Warden' or 'Inquisitor.'

Makes everything seem a little bit overly-formal all the time, but I didn't notice it much in DA:O.

I like them having a default last name.

Last name. That's just way easier to come up with on their part. They need a name that is both gender and personality ambiguous-sounding.

Default last name all the way. Half of what makes my characters mine is giving them the name that goes with the personality I build for each of them. I don't need the game to tell me, your name is Jane, now work around that. Give me the freedom to call my characters what I want, please.

And as mentioned, where I'm from it's not uncommon at all to call people by their last names. I have very close friends I only call by their last names, and friends/co-workers (which is more what your DAI companions are) whose first names I don't even remember because the last name is just what they go by. Companions calling me "Hawke" in DA2 never felt weird to me - it certainly felt much less alienating than even my love interest calling me "Warden" in DAO.

I prefer the default last name. I think it was made less awkward for Bethany/Carver in DA2 because they tended to call you brother/sister instead of Hawke.

Prefer being addressed by my last name cause it doubles as a first so default last names are good for cause it gives personicfication and a relatable feeling.

Besides calling somebody by there forst name is way too personal imo. Better to use maiden/surnames or nicknames over a first name

I always feel the need to input my own names. I work so hard on the character's facial features that I may as well make it truly my own in most every other regard.

If there has to be a default name, I prefer it to be a default last name instead of first.  I like thinking of them for myself; it makes the character feel a little more personal to me.  Default last names make sense in both DA games because of the origin stories in the first and the set hero Hawke in the second.

Besides default titles, titles like "Warden" and "Inquisitor" always work well, too.  In most cases, I prefer them even more.

I prefer the default name to be the last name. I don't think that it sounds unnatural to call someone by their last name. My main group of friends call me by my last name because when I started hanging out with them there was already someone with my first name in the group, then a few years later I'm still called by my last name even though he left and burned some bridges with this group, just because it's what I've always gone by.

Actually characters call other characters by their only name. Last names don't seem to exist within the game world outside of NPC's. At least thats the impression I get cause the only name ever displayed for them is the single word name.

There are plenty, they're just not bandied around as much as the PC's (and most followers actually don't have them. See Leliana, Morrigan, Wynne, Merril, Isabela).

Only the characters who have a noble(-ish) background really have them. The player last names are basically just a hotfix for a bug that they couldn't get rid off in DA:O. The problem had to do with making the whole game/CC not get weird without default last names for every character, when only the Aeducan and Cousland PC were initially meant to have last names.

See, that's my point. A good majority of companions, and even npc's, the characters we actually interact with, don't have last names. And its easy to claim that the characters listed above have "last" names but if they're only mentioned once, sometimes only in codex text, and never brought up again through the whole game.

Well, one wonders if that even counts. For instance, why is meredith always refered to as "Knight Commander Meredith" instead of "Knight Commander Stannard" as one would expect when addressing someone of higher rank. Or why is aveline never refered to as "Captain Vollen"?

The way they designed the world, last names might as well not even exist, since no one ever, ever, ever, uses them.

As much as the default last name provides a more personal approach to your character's first name, I do find it rather odd when everyone refers to your character by his/her last name, especially when others get referred to by their first (Carver, Bethany, Leandra, etc...).

At least in Origins it really made little difference (and in some cases, not at all when it came to the City Elf/Dwarf Commoner/Surana) since the majority of the dialogue they manage to remain 'name-neutral'.

A default first name would at least feel more personal, but then there's always the question of 'why can't my character be x or y name'. I'd go as far as to suggest having 2-4 default first names to choose from, but then there's always that group who would rail against it because they don't like any of the options or because they couldn't give them the name THEY wanted.

I prefer default last name. I don't mind people calling me by that especially when you also have a title to mix it up. Only feels weird when you get into romances which is why it sometimes works better if you have a 'pet name' your LI calls you, just when you are alone.

Not a fan of having a fixed first name that I didn't choose. I love The Witcher games but I fund it difficult to empathise with Geralt because he's not 'mine'. Never played default femshep or Sheploo for the same reason.

That's a good question. I think I prefer the default last name, but it would be kind of a nice change for my character to be called her first name in the game versus the last name. The bad side to that is if it's horrible first name.

Hmmm....

"I love you, from the bottom of my heart, Inquisitor...I really do, and nothing will keep me away from you, Inquisitor..."

Hmmmmmm....

"I love you, Hawke, from the bottom of my heart ... I really do, and nothing will keep me away from you, Hawke..."

Okay, cringeworthy love-dialogue aside, I am siding with last name being less silly-sounding ^^
