My nagging concerns just got a boost - I wonder if I'm going to hate this story [mostly all-clear now]

I just watched the new gameplay video.

I've always had concerns about being forced to be supportive of southern Thedas' dominant religion, ever since the game's title was announced.

Then there was this "Herald of Andraste" business. Even if I can roleplay against it, I'd dislike spending the whole game detesting what other people call me.

Now it appears every time I claim an area, I'll put down a sign inscribed with a line that easily makes it into the top 3 of my reasons why I dislike this religion. Apparently, I'll help spread the faith whether I want it or not. Even if it's just symbolism, the message doesn't lose any impact.

Well, there's no way to be polite about this. If this happens, DAI will be a disaster of ME3-like proportions for me personally. And since this will be the second time in a row Bioware has attached messages I detest to my character without giving me any choice about it, I'll be wary of getting invested in Bioware franchises again in the future. It would be a shame. I love the world and the stories told in it. But if Bioware continues to define my protagonists for me in ways I hate, ultimately they're goling to lose me.

From one moment to the other, I've changed from pleasant anticipation to trepidation. This is all too much like the ME3 story...

From my understanding those "landmarks in the graves" are telling the story of the war in the emerald graves, with the flavour text of that landmark explaining why the Chantry began trying to convert the elves.

It's just a side quest explaining the history of the area while you claim land, it has absolutely nothing to do with your Inquisitor or their religious beliefs. In fact, I think that it's a great storytelling technique.

I...kind of agree.  But I would also say let's not jump the gun just yet.  Maybe our character will only proselytize for formality's sake and not be a believer personally.

Bioware said they will never state whether the maker is real or not they will leave the maker ambiguous.

I did say "if this happens". The little things add up though. It is becoming hard to stay optimistic in this regard.

Gaider confirmed he will never EVER confirm whether the Maker is real or not real in the canon.

If you look to the right of the screen it says "Landmarks 2/22". That doesn't mean its spreading the word of the Chantry, it means you found a Landmark and claimed it with a flag.

Even if it IS an Andrastrian based task,  its most likely fluff xp, like so many things in open world (ish) games. You can choose not to do it and stay try to your rp ideals. Its probably for Completionists only.

I know, I was kidding.  I just think that we don't know the whole context of the story to address this.  I think the OP as several options:

1.  play the game and see the story for yourself

2.  Not play the game and wait for reviews

3.  Not play the game and see spoilers of what happens on a wiki

4.  Not play the game and ask a friend who has

They won't do that, and neither would I want it. I don't dislike the "faith" theme and its strong presence in the game. It's a very human thing after all, and it would be strange if it didn't come up. However, I do want to keep my character untouched by it.

Wait until the game is out. Then make your judgements.

Faith and the chantry are a big part of the world. We only know one person who calls us the herald sao far and Bioware have said we can be completely against the chantry

Actually, and I'm like 99% sure on this, you can squash the problem of people referring to you as the "Herald of Andraste" pretty quickly. You can choose whether they call you that or just Inquisitor.

It's just a collection thing far as I could tell. Like Ianamus it's telling an old story in the process. It's akin to finding codex entries, though you stabbing something in the ground is a little weird. Makes me wonder if its a quest-quest and your making the landmarks, or if that kinda thing is lore stuff in each zone independent of any quest givings.

Either way not something I care to much about, hopefully it doesn't turn out to be to horrible for anyone else. Would be a shame for something that minor to ruin what hopefully is a great game.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they said that you can reject the whole "Herald" thing.

I assumed the "stabbing something in the ground" had something to do with fast travel, like you mark a point where you can come back later. I could be wrong, of course.

Anyway, I doubt the game will force you into a religion, even if fictional. It's not Bioware's style.

It'd be weird if they forced you to be an Andraste Follower when the diverse races are not followers? Pretty sure just because of that you can squash any religious conception people try to force on your inquisitor.

Logic would dictate that your worries are based on nothing. Also, as it's been mentioned before, many videos / twitters / etc / it's been said that you can rp against the chantry or go along with it. Same with the Herald title.

The inquisition insignia is itself a combination of two Andrastean symbols

I feel like at this point any post with the word "Concern" in it should just be rejected. The word is getting ridiculously overused.

Are you talking about the Andraste's Promise bit? I don't think that the sign says that. It doesn't even have letters on it, it is just a pole.

If that isn't what you're talking about, could you be more specific?

I'm not sure I know what the OP is talking about ; but we can pick different heraldry for Skyhold , don't know if we're going to be able to use it outside though.

If it's the Inquisition symbol...well mmm...we know it's close to Chantry symbolism ( the old Inquisition and the Chantry ended BFF ..).

It's not a surprise.

Meh. I'm not worried at all by this. That is, to say, I don't think that we'll be forced to play as an Andrastian if we don't want to. The folks at Bioware seem to be of the same stock as most people on these forums so I wouldn't count on religion being given its fair dues. If anything, they're setting things up for Andrastianism falling flat on its face.

Not too fluffed personally but I have an amazing ability to re-brand/reinterpret info that goes against my idea of my characters.
