I am an Anti-theist in real life to boot.
just curious what the difference between an atheist and an "Anti-theist" ???

I just watched the new gameplay video.
I've always had concerns about being forced to be supportive of southern Thedas' dominant religion, ever since the game's title was announced.
Then there was this "Herald of Andraste" business. Even if I can roleplay against it, I'd dislike spending the whole game detesting what other people call me.
Now it appears every time I claim an area, I'll put down a sign inscribed with a line that easily makes it into the top 3 of my reasons why I dislike this religion. Apparently, I'll help spread the faith whether I want it or not. Even if it's just symbolism, the message doesn't lose any impact.
Well, there's no way to be polite about this. If this happens, DAI will be a disaster of ME3-like proportions for me personally. And since this will be the second time in a row Bioware has attached messages I detest to my character without giving me any choice about it, I'll be wary of getting invested in Bioware franchises again in the future. It would be a shame. I love the world and the stories told in it. But if Bioware continues to define my protagonists for me in ways I hate, ultimately they're goling to lose me.
From one moment to the other, I've changed from pleasant anticipation to trepidation. This is all too much like the ME3 story...
Seriously, all these people getting upset over a videogame religion, it's mind boggling. This is a fantasy game, where spirits actually exist, and the dead walk around. Your dislike for real world religion doesn't have to be the same when you roleplay, because that's exactly what roleplaying is. So for you to claim it's a disaster when it's no doubt just a side quest and has nothing to do with the plot, you really need to get over yourself as it was probably nothing more then a codex entry.

I am both.
An Atheist is just a person lacking belief in any "higher power or god".
An Anti-theist is against all religions and wants them gone.
I believe they do more harm than good, and humanity should move past religions and work towards bettering ourselves via science and humanitarian efforts.
.
Anyways, no point in dragging this up and derail it into a "real life" debate about religion. They never end well.
I've actually been "here" quite a bit longer. That doesn't mean I buy everything Bioware makes. For instance I don't have the NWN games, Jade Empire or SWTOR. You're right that I'm going to stick with a series once I'm in it, but it doesn't go beyond that.ummm you have posted 21,614 times in these forums, you a far to invested in everything Bioware, your not going anywhere.
Just a brief look at your join date and the times you posted means you would have averaged about 12 posts a day....for 5 years....
hate DAI or not my moneys on you not going anywhere
I can roleplay a devout Andrastean, but I don't want that. Above all, I don't want to be *limited* to that. Also, my dislike of religions is specific, focused on expansionist religions with authoritarian father figures as gods. I might not care much for any religion, but I don't actively dislike all of them and would be much more ok with things if Andrasteanism was different.Seriously, all these people getting upset over a videogame religion, it's mind boggling. Just to put this to bed, I saw another gameplay video last night and the flags being planted were just marking Landmarks. The one I remember was a statue of a wolf jutting out of a waterfall. No mention of Andrastianism, The Chantry or you claiming anything for anybody.
Concern alleviated OP ![]()
if it makes you feel any better, go out and burn down a church.... then when you're in jail you wont have to play the game

Having said that, the signs appear to be just landmarks with random text, and I've been told we can choose our banners. So there may not be significant problems for me after all.
Well, I can understand your point. I don't really have anything against religions that are only about becoming a better person, but I hate religions that demand obeying a higher power, someone/something that knows better than you and everything that happens (whether good or bad) can't be influenced by your side because it's all part of a "plan". I detest people like that, because it seems to me that they are just too lazy, too weak to think for themselves and rather have somebody else take control of their lives. Even more so if these people claim to be good persons just because they're going to church every weekend, or because they think they'll be rewarded for it in some sort of afterlife.
^You Sir should go to the chantry and repent.

I certainly do share the OP's fears about the possibility this might not be the case. I've however managed on the whole to remain pretty hopeful that the necessary roleplaying options will exist in regards of my inquisitor's ability to be hostile or friendly to the Chantry. Dragon Age hasn't burnt me yet so hoping that trend continues.

Don't worry, becasue....

I do remember it being said you can choose how to react to being called "Herald of Andraste". So I think you'll be fine, OP. You can still play a non-believer who hates having this title.
Never change, BSN. Never change. Kneejerk reactions and comedic levels of hyperbolic hate for a thing you haven't played yet are always funny.
Wait I thought you'd get called by your Surname at times too?
I'd prefer to be able to influence if they call me Herald of Whatever or just Inquisitor. I'd also accept my surname.I do remember it being said you can choose how to react to being called "Herald of Andraste". So I think you'll be fine, OP. ...only to get our old friend the Sten in his place. Not sure if that's an improvement, but I guess there's something to say for one less who spreads the Qun. I'm not usually a pro-active warmonger - intense dislike isn't enough to justify killing - but I'll make an exception for the Qunari. That's why I always defeat the Arishok in combat

Playing a character who hates what they're being called is an interesting roleplaying option I'm going to explore, but I'd prefer if the annoyance over this didn't color all of my playthroughs except the one where I play an Inquisitor who embraces it.
Are you implying you want to dictate what OTHER people call you?
Haha, good luck.

To be fair, youtube seems to be about as bad.

I want to tell them not to call me "Herald of Andraste". And I would prefer if Bioware made it so that they mostly followed that request. I think that's not an outrageous preference, is it? You wouldn't want to be called what you are not in your own eyes, would you? Of course I'm aware that I ultimately have no control over it.Are you implying you want to dictate what OTHER people call you?

I understand were you are coming from. It would annoy me to no end if someone starts calling me something that bothers me, and then when I tell them to stop doing it, they just keep going. That can be pretty offensive, actually.
