So Bioware I hear your character creation tools suck.

Both my male and female shepards looked badass, so whatever. You just need to learn how to make em look good within the limits.
Mind posting a pic of you Shepard so that I might judge how badass he looks? I have no problem with the fem Shep it is only the male Shep that I have trouble with.

Your curiously specific need for a particular style and how this somehow impacts the story (which then in turn reimpacts the charactor creator) seems to be a bit odd - but whatevs
I know technically Bioware doesnt have to put a character creator in their games and Mass Effect could do quite well without one, but if you are going to put a character creator in your game why wouldnt you allow the player to create a character that they want to play instead of forcing them to create a character along the lines of what they think the character should look like, my gripe with the character creation is not unwarranted and my arguments are quite valid.
I know you fanbois think that the devs at Bioware are gods and that their creations are perfect in every way, but you do have to realise that not everything they shoot out of their arse is a nugget of gold. Nobody here can say that the character creator in both Mass Effect games is any good, quite frankly the character creation tool they use in the Mass Effect games is quite rubbish.
I certainly hope they decide to improve the character creation tool for ME3 but so far at this point in time I really cant say that they will. As the character creation tool is at the moment they might as well scrap it and force everyone to play as Vandaloo Shepard.
I don't know how you got from me saying:

I am all for more customization options. Your entire post could be summed up by "there needs to be beards!" and you would have had pages full of /signed supporters
Your valid points seem to be drowning in your own hyperbole

Oh that would be great, and if anyone else wants to post a pic of their own male Shepard that they feel looks pretty good please post it here.
I happen to like my Shepard. The character creator isn't all that awful(hairstyles not included of course), once you figure out which sliders really change your face for the better.

There's nothing wrong with the character creation tools; it's just hard to get a formula that works, which is why there's a default shepard.

My infiltrator male shepard is admittedly quite handsome. The voice acting just doesn't suit his face, but he's a creation that I pride myself upon.

I was really hoping they'd do something akin to Dragon Age once more, whereby we download a character creator a week or two in advance and can play around with it some.

Just look at all those great Sheps:
http://social.biowar.../index/623779/1
But besides that I think the developers had the following problem:
If you made a great change to the character creator, it would be almost impossible to programm the posibility to change your old Shep in the new character creator.
So the options are:
- new character creator, but not the possibility to change your old Shep afterwards
Or
- old character + possibility to change old Shep.
Im pretty sure thats how it went.

1) Eye shapes
2) Hair styles
The hair was extremely static (I don't expect actual movement I just mean it kind of looked plastic) and the eye shapes just looked bizarre for the most part.
I like to at least try to create a character that looks vaguely like me but that wasn't at all possible with ME. My DA:O one is a much better match. I just find it helps with immersion.
Strangely my femshep looks a lot better but then I went crazy with her: really wide cheekbones, round face, dark skin, red buzzcut, yellow eyebrows and blue eyeshadow. She looked petty good in a Suze kind of way.

I am suprised that Bioware hasn't used the character creator from DA:O as a basis on which to build the ME2 one.
I am as well. The DA:O system looks pretty nice, and turns out some excellent characters.

I assume that part of it is to do with the fact that AFAIK they use dfferent engines. However I presume they could have built off of the DA:O in so much as they've got the concepts and design for the creator down and some of the code can be re-used at least.
Clearly they'd need to create new models that were more appropriate for a sci-fi setting in some instances (and no dwarves or elves!) but still it would have been nice to have the same number of options.

It isnt just about the beards but all of the customization options altogether, hair, beards, scars (which if you believe the poster who posted earlier in this thread that scars have been taken out in ME2). I am not just asking for more beards I am asking for more customization options altogether.
And while I will admit that my "everything they shoot out of their arse is a nugget of gold" comment was an exaggeration you do seem like you refuse to acknowledge how bad the character creation really is. You try and claim that I exaggerate how bad the character creation is but really nothing I have said in this topic has been an exaggeration (apart from my "nugget of gold" comment).
Biowares character creation tool for ME is bad, sure it isnt the worst I have seen but it is still really bad when compared to some other games. I seriously hope they fix it in ME3.

While they are both quite good looking Shepards they still fit into the style of what Bioware thinks Shepard should look like. The look I am trying to go for with my Shepard simply isnt possible with the character creation tool we currently have.
What I am trying to say in this topic is that Bioware should stop forcing us to create a Shepard within the boundries of what they think Shepard should look like and instead give us the customization options we need to create some truely unique looking Shepards.
