Or do they stay tier 1 iron forever? I've never tried this before, but I'm thinking about doing it when I play as a dwarf again.

According to the DA Wiki, all of the armour and weapons sold by Old Tegrin are variable tier (i.e upgradable); with the exception of the Ceremonial Armored Boots, which are fixed Red Steel (Tier 5).

That is good to know, although whenever I see him, everything is iron, regardless of my character's level.

Hmmm. I'll debug one of my toons into that map and see what I can see.

(Some time passes...)

I used a level 19 character, and zz_ran_debug to access the map. All the non-unique weapons and armour in his stock were T1 (Iron or wood, for the Crossbow). Bought everything, went back to camp and sold it all to Bodahn. Saved, and reloaded. Everything tiered up to either Silverite or Dragonbone (and the Crossbow was Dragonthorn.)

Went back and did it again with a level 23 toon, and stuck the T1s into The Magic Box. Everything was T7 when I reloaded.
