I liked how he was doucehbaggy. :(

I admit though. I pretty much died at that "never happy" situation you got with him going to the templars.

Ask him is this what he really wants?

OMG YOU THINK I CAN'T THINK FOR MYSELF

Beg him not to go?

OMG I WANT A LIFE OUTSIDE OF YOU YOU'RE SO SELFISH AND JUST THINKING OF YOURSELF

Wish him well?

OMG YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT ME!

Jesus. THERE WAS NO RIGHT ANSWER. WAI CARVER. WAIIIII.

One more reason for me not to play Mages...  I liked Bethany better anyway.

You know that feeling when you think you've got the day off and you decide to sleep in, then someone calls you/rings your bell/knocks on your window and reminds you don't?

That's Varric.

He doesn't want to be in Ferelden/Orlais. He wants to go back to Kirkwall (which is kind of crazy in itself).

Well Kirkwall is his home and he probably feels responsible for what happened there and wants to help.

I think deep in his heart, Carver knows where his path should take him.

Ugh heck no. Beth's as interesting as watching paint dry. Warden Beth is a bit better but I much much much prefer Carver.

Plus him going from a prat to someone dependable is a much better character arc to me than Beth's circle or warden arc.

Hell I'd take Templar Carver over Beth and I dislike Templar Carver.

Problem with Carver as great as I think he is, is that it's waaay too difficult to get his character arc going without metagaming.

Just about every character we've come across and will meet in DAI will probably have an attitude about some things that are a trigger to them, so um... well, after what Varric went through, I don't know why people are shocked. I think he's just being compared to his former self too much back when his world hadn't completely crumbled around him yet, I mean we can all remember the general attitude of most of our DA2 companions, right? xD So what's so wrong with Varric biting back a bit? Everyone else does. :P

I can get it easily enough without metagaming I just take Anders because useful warden and I take Carver because my Hawke didn't feel like getting into the whinefest why can't I come with Carver :P

Everything else fell into place.

Varric not liking the rather aggressive woman who interrogated him?

Shocker. Really.

I'd be pretty pissed too if she stabbed a book I was holding in my freaking lap! She was a bit of force or worse aim away from encouraging Varric to become a eunuch.

*Shrug* I don't equate unpleasant with interesting. Prolly why I am not a fan of Cassandra. ;)

I thought Beth was interesting, if not dynamic. An Apostate from birth who either finally gets caught by the Templars and realizes that being in the Circle is, if not better than being on the run, bad in different ways.

Warden Bethany is interesting because she drives home the point that someone who has not choice in whether they are gifted and powerful sometimes just wants a quiet existence.

Bethany was interesting because she was a normal person who had all the gifts of a badass. That's an interesting psychology.

Oh yeah I forgot how close she was to the family jewels.

Oooh yeah.

He's fine as a rival to me but yeah friendship requires way too much metagaming. I kind of wish he started more near the middle instead of so far out to the rival side.

Neither do I. Carver however managed to be both to me. :P I'm not a fan of Morrigan however.

Yeah I was more fond of the black Sheep in a mostly magical family angle. Plus Carver and Hawke's back and forth was far more engaging to me than Beth's constant sweetness.

Ah but I played my Hawke like that. So Beth piggybacking on that was simply uninteresting to me.

That and mage Hawke to me is more interesting than mundane Hawke with mage sister.

Thankfully we can each get the sibling we prefer.

I liked Carver because I thought he had the most normal reaction to the usual hyper-amazing protagonist we get in an RPG: jealously and frustration at being overshadowed and dismissed.

My Solution in every second Playthrough as a Mage: Take Carver to the Deep Roads and let him Die there. Oh I am such a nice Brother *cough*

That's also very true.

Plus despite his grouching he clearly does care about his family. He's just a massive sourpuss about it. :P

Eh. Bethany's isn't unrealistic, especially since she's a Mage and you're not. The baby of the family usually idolizes the oldest sibling.

Some people just like having an easy relationship with their simbling. With Fenris and Anders whining to my ear and Merrill and Isabela causing me never ending trouble, I thoughts having an stable and easy going relationship with Bethany was quite an breath of fresh air.

Ah I'm used to arguing and punching my siblings in the face :P so carver felt more real to me. And I liked Fenris whining, Isabela is entirely optional so I skipped that headache though agreed on Anders and Merill.

But I could get a stable and easy going relationship with someone like Varric so being able to weddle Carver and watch him grow (I especially love how he chews you out if he's a warden and you side with the templars) was new to me. Especially since Carver comes to his own regardless of friendship/rivalry. (well Warden carver does anyway. Templar Carver still on the road).

They have personalities that definitiely clash. Varric is sarcastic, laid back and very charming and Cassandra is more serious, guarded and aggressive. I can't wait to see the companion banter and interactions, it never hurts to have some drama and spice added into the group.

He's still the same Varric... The woman who interrogated him and standsa opposite to his belief touched a touchy subject... What the hell do you expect? he is Varric, not SarcasmBot2.0

I'm a very sarcastic person and i deflect, but if some woman tried to stab me in my jewels and brought up my destroyed home , I'd be hostile too.

Considering we don't have to have all companions, I doubt he's being forced to stay there.

From that audio conversation I don't see what the big deal is.. don't mind the tone.

I wonder if hardening him last game will affect how chipper, jaded, or itchy his trigger finger is this one.

This. Exactly this.

Honestly, I'd be disappointed if he didn't hold at least a small bit of dislike for her. Varric was my favorite part of DA2, so to see he's still bitter about being taken against his will is awesome.
