I was reading up on the confirmed characters, companions, etc and the confirmed list of voice actors coming in to voice previous characters and decided to burn through DA:O/A and DAII. After playing through it for the umpteenth millionth time I began to wonder what became or will become of the companions and the main characters that have yet to be confirmed? Here's my general thoughts on the subject.
Dragon Age: Origins/Awakening
The Warden/Warden-Commander
There are various endings for Warden. First is death after fighting the Archdemon. Their story ends there, no need for closure. However, after the Warden lives and goes off to venture through Awakening what happens to them? According to the ending of DA II, the Warden-Commander simply disappears without a trace.
I believe it was confirmed that the Warden-Commander will not be appearing in DAIII. However, I would like for those characters that survived to have an actual ending. I'm not saying that they should come in and steal the Inquisitor's thunder. If it came to a setting where I could see my Wardens one last time it would be during their Calling. One last fight where the Inquisitor assists them, maybe in killing another Darkspawn like the Architect, the Mother or Corypheus.
The exception to this would be if your character got hitched to Alistar and became Queen of Ferelden. If that's the case I'd hope to see her leading either Warden or Ferelden troops into battle on occasion, maybe even fighting alongside or opposing her at some point.
Dog
Ares and Reign (for males and females respectively) has always been a faithful companion of mine. I was disappointed to find out that there wouldn't be a dog companion in DA:I. Not even as a summon type companion like in the previous game.
Alistar
I'm pretty sure Alistar is going to be in DA:I in either a minor or major role. Excluding if you...y'know...let him die in Origins.
Ohgren
We all know what happened to Ohrgen during Awakening. Assuming he survived the ending, what has he been up to? As one of my favorite companions to date I'd really like to see him again. Maybe as the current Warden-Commander either rebuilding Amaranthine or the Warden Keep, depending on which one was chosen.
Shale
Now I'm really curious to see what Shale has been up to since we parted ways at the end of Origins. In one scene it says that she went to the Imperium to find out if she can return to her dwarven form. Did she succeed? Did she fail? Is she eager to go on more adventures with a new ally, the Inquisitor? Of all of the companions Shale would make the top of my list when it comes to seeing old faces once again.
Sten
Big spoiler here. So I read that, in canon, Sten became the new Arishok after Hawke killed the previous one in DA2. What I'd like to see is the alternate path (if the Arishok left with the book and Isabella) and what became of Sten then. Or maybe even what he's been doing as Arishok since he ascended to it. Sten introduced me to one of the concepts I have loved about the DA series: the Qun and the Qunari. I was a little disappointed when I found out we can't actually play as a Qunari, instead we are playing a Vasoth. I am still eager to one as their race/philosophy is interesting to me. At one point I'd like to have my Qunquisitor meet the first Qunari that everyone was introduced to.
Wynne
At this point, I'd say roughly a decade after DA:O/A, I would think that it is safe to assume that Wynne has passed away. I wouldn't mind being able to attend her funeral or even see a memorial dedicated to her, assuming that she was recruited to help the Warden. Or heck, I'd even be happy to see it just in passing. Like my Inquisitor just walking by and hears the event going on or playing in the background.
Leliana, Morrigan, Zevran
I know the first two will be in the game. I also know that Zevran will be in the game but only briefly mentioned. I'm hoping they reveal more of him throughout the game. Maybe even give him a cameo appearance like they did in DA2.
Anders
Okay, not my most favorite company (sarcastic comment). I liked him more in Awakening myself. However, my recent play through DA2 was with a female mage Hawke who romanced Anders and let him live. So I would definitely like to see what happened to the disasterous duo after all hell broke loose in DA:I.
Sigrun and Velanna
Like Wynne, I think it'd be safe to assume that Sigrun died. Most likely doing her calling. Velanna, however, has a bit more room to maneuver. Depending on the outcome of Awakening, she could assume the role of a hero or villain.
Nathaniel
We briefly saw him in DA2, if he survived through Awakening, and I wouldn't mind seeing him once more in a similar setting. Nothing too fancy, just a quick mission.
Misc Characters/Events
There are more characters worth mentioning. Most notably Arl Eamon and Connor, Bhelen and/or Harrowmont and Irving, as well as various others. These characters played vital roles in Origins and I'd really like to see how things played out for them several years down the road. Though of this group I think the dwarves would hold the most favor. In most of my play throughs the dwarves expanded one way or another. I found out that we won't be going into the main dwarven cities, Orzammar and Kal-Sharok. I was deeply disappointed in this. I was looking forward to seeing what's been happening in Orzammar over the last decade and seeing how my choices really impacted dwarven societies.
Dragon Age 2
Hawke
Like the Warden/Warden-Commander, I don't mean to have Hawke show up and steal the show from the Inquisitor. I would, however, like to see Hawke constantly popping up and having a personality that's built around the choices the player made during DA 2. I.e., playing the overzealous warrior, the carefree mage, the loveable scoundrel, etc. Depending on the choices made by the Inquisitor, Hawke could play a support or antagonist role. I'm all for both options. Though, like the Warden/Commander, Hawke is another character I'd like to have some closure with. Even if it means I have to kill them myself.
Anders
Already discussed him. Moving on.
Bethany/Carver
I wasn't too big of a fan of either of these characters. However I would like to know what happened to them in DA:I. Either as a mage or templar (respectively) or as an optional Grey Warden. They could have their own little cameos or maybe even share one with Hawke.
Aveline
So much can be done with Aveline! Though personally, and nothing against Donnic, I pray that she becomes widowed again but this time she's available for romance. A man can dream. Oh well. Still, I suspect we'll see Guard Captain Aveline again if we and when we go back to Kirkwall.
Isabela
I'm sure there's a huge cry for Isabela to come back. Well I'm here to tell you that I am not jumping on that band wagon. I'm willing to bet that Isabela dies of something she picked up during shore leave. In the event that she doesn't, I wouldn't mind seeing her in an epic raiding party or perhaps some sort of sea battle.
Merrill and Fenris
Two characters I don't really have much input for. Merrill could have found another clan or ventured to the land that King Alistar had granted the Dalish. Fenris could be seen hunting down mages in the Imperium. Those are just a few examples.
Overall
Of course, most (if not all) of this is just opinion and personal speculation and desire. To finish it off I would like to add just one more thing.
Due to the length of time between DA:O and DA:I it is safe to assume that some of the above could have come to pass. Adding such events into the game just before launch is highly unlikely and a lot to ask for. What wouldn't be too much to ask for is a future DLC similar to that of Mass Effect 3's Citadel. This way you could get some closure for certain characters who have already passed and set up future content/games for others. The above information can mixed and matched to provide various outcomes which can possibly result in the Inquisitor putting together a tribute for our past heroes. Cullen, who has been there for each adventure, could help with it.
Even if this isn't the end of the Dragon Age games, I know that several characters will likely not come up in future games. Although it hasn't been as extensive as the ME series, I have spent just as much time playing with these characters and would love to find the same kind of closure Citadel provided for Shepard, even though it wasn't the same protagonist through each game.
