For my first play through of any game I try to make a PC that I'm not that invested in so if the story doesn't go the way I want it to I won't feel bad.  Usually my second or third play through is the one I really work on.  My first play through squad will probably be fluid, I like to try and give everyone a shot the first time get a feel for their story their strengths and weaknesses.

inquisitor (warrior), dorian and varric. The fourth will vary but if it doesn't matter who it is then I'll prefer another mage.

In the first two games I just tended to always take whichever two companions I liked most and then rotate everyone else in the third slot, party balance be damned. In DAO, my two rogues were always with me and in DA2, it was Aveline and Fenris.

 

I'm thinking my team makeup will be a lot more balanced this time. Partly because I expect fights to be harder, partly because I'm not going to be a mage again, partly because I know more about combat roles now. But mostly because all the followers seem so interesting this time. I can't see wanting to leaving anyone back at Skyhold for very long. If anything it's going to be really frustrating deciding who to take.

 

Probably the only semi-permanent fixture in my team will be Cassandra. Solas will probably be around a lot because I'm thinking of romancing him, but I also want to make use of the other two mages as much as possible. I might use the rogues less just because I'll likely be one myself, but I'll be sad anytime I leave Sera and Varric behind

 

So yeah, probably Cassandra + equal rotation of everyone else.
