This news on the Seekers being able to use Templar abilities without being Lyrium addicts is interesting. For those who do not know this, check out the recent class overview video.
This is interesting because of a few things :-
1) It means non mages can learn abilities that look like magic without being hooked up to lyrium. In this Seekers remind me of the Chi Blockers from Avatar where they can block a bender's ability but without needing to use any addictive drug.
2) Templars have been royally screwed in their collective arses by the Chantry. I would say they are screwed more than mages. I mean, just look at what this means for the Templars. The Chantry has essentially been recruiting thousands of people, addicting them to lyrium, hooking them to it, making them slowly succumb to the addiction...All this...so that they can have a military branch. All this, so that they can have tons of people in service and servitude to them.
I mean, the whole line about "Templars keeping mages in check" because of security, Chant of Light and Blight is just bullshit now, no ? Especially when we see that the Seekers can essentially do what the Templars do without being addicted to lyrium.
Sure, Andraste said "Magic is to serve man but to never rule over him"...I do not recall her saying "Magic is to be regulated by addicting people to lyrium"
3) This also means that the Chantry is, in many ways, indirectly responsible for the creation of the Red Templars. If they had trained the templars to not be addicted to lyrium, then perhaps the Templars would not have bothered to find another source of lyrium such as Red Lyrium to use.
4) Clash between Seekers and Templars. I am surprised this has not happened in large numbers because of this. You would think a group of people who got addicted to lyrium would be really mad at another group who can do everything they do without the addiction. However, I suppose, this conflict can be seen with the emergence of Red Templars.
