Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

@Tispeculiar they grow some automatically, some are added by talents, more come from gear.

Original post:

If you check out the new videos where someone level up there seams to be no attribute points to spend, only one skill point.

You do however get a few attribute points when picking a passive skill.

So my question is: will there be no attribute points on level up in Dragon age I?

Old updates:

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw 3m3 minutes ago

@Gladion20 No, assigning stats is not part of level up. They grow as you level, buy talents, and, notably, equip gear.

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw 2m2 minutes ago

@Gladion20 Notable because you can find, craft and upgrade a wider variety of gear with stats more directly under your control.

When I started this topic I wasn’t even sure ppl would reply, "I actually thought that if ppl care someone would probably already asked this question"

As it turns out ppl really care and I'm really happy it got this attention, both from ppl that like this and dislike this change. It shows that this wasn’t just a important topic for me personally but for BSN as a whole and hopefully it means that Bio is going to look it over for future installments of the series. It is what it is for this game but keep sharing your opinions, keep the discussion going and remember to stay classy and keep it civil! =)

Update 6:
Thanks to analysis from posters in this thread we now know that we only get attribute points from equipment and passive skills which we can chose to pick on level up. - 25 oktober 2014

Edit: According to Mike Laidaw there is indeed automatic attribute disputation upon level up. - 27 Oktober 2014

Okay based off the CC trailer (which isn't the best guess to be fair)

Do we even get to pick our attributes at the beginning of the game? Or our skills?

No to both, though once you're done the initial prologue (takes me about 10 minutes) you can get your first respec potion for free (or maybe 1 coin).  After that you can buy an indefinite number of respec potions, though they have a tangible cost associated with them.

My hype for this game is plummeting lower and lower with each reveal.

My favourite class has been nerfed hard along with my favourite build (entropy and creation). We can't switch weapons in combat and now we can't even select our own attribute points.

I was playing as a mage today and was able to make a build that was pretty clearly the most powerful build in terms of speed of killing enemies today than I was with my rogues.  There are certainly some very good synergies you can make early that can make the mage smash opponents.  My favourite was using an ability that let me one on one the guardians (which can be hard with their shields) because it was an arcing blast the ended up curling around and hitting them in the rear while reducing their magic resistance letting me chain an a spell that did large damage while knocking them down, allowing me to finish them off with basic attacks while on the ground.

Well, the devs never claimed you could beat nightmare without crafting. But normal should be plenty possible without crafting.

I have not played very far into the game's overall content... maybe about 15 hours in and a lot of that was spent clearing out the first "open" environment.  But I agree with this assessment based on how I have played the game thus far.

It seems that in this game the extra dialogue options will be based on other means. I think I recall some unlocking based on how you choose to build up the inquisition, but I'm Not sure.

This is true.

There are also class and race restrictions as well, and sometimes they intersect in an interesting way (An elf responding as a mage will respond differently than a Human responding as a mage, for instance).

How would you say this game, on normal, compares to the previous games (also on normal) in terms of difficulty?

I do not find there to be that much of a difference so far.  Maybe a smidge easier than Origins in the early going depending on your build, but part of that is because combat design is also built around being somewhat attritional (wearing on the party by making them spend resources) as opposed to "all encounters must be designed around the idea of incapacitating the party."

See below

I actually prefer this - it makes sense to me that as you aquire knowledge and influence via the spread of the inquisition of the choices you make as its leader, you are able to open up new dialogue options. I might not be personally very charming, but that doesn't mean I should be restricted from getting an answer to a question intel from my spies has gleaned.

Just to supplement this, there's effectively two aspects of the game that you level up: your characters and the Inquisition itself.

Each of the 4 branches of the Inquisition has a skill that unlocks conversation options when appropriate (they also up your xp when discovering codex entries too. I find them very powerful/useful upgrades).

Sorry to ask, but is this also true for the human's "extra" talent point? It's pre-assigned for us until we get the option to buy a respec potion (which I can't do because I'm a psycho)?

Actually it is not preassigned.  You'll start with the same two abilities, but on your first level up (shortly into the game) you'll have two ability points to allocate instead of one.

To be clear, the respec potion applies to ability/skill points, not attributes.

Agreed. Bioware took the time and effort to write a blog post on romances (which are a tiny and optional part of the game in their own words) so they should really think about doing the same on gameplay mechanics.

You may have noticed that I spend less time on the boards as well.  I don't know the specifics of why they chose a design like this over another, but it's really, really busy at the office right now.

A debate over what is or is not a "true RPG" (particularly with the different takes some games take on RPG mechanics) will see this thread closed.
