Before you say that you need to see the full tree.

We can only pick so much abilities at a time. For a play through the minimum is 20 and can't get through every tree with that. You do see how that tree branches and their other ability trees to pick, right?

Point is they may give you passive to boost your stats but it up to you to pick which one on which branch of the tree. This is not the link system form final fantasy.

The problem is this sounds better than what you want it to be. It's effectively a non-choice. It's the illusion of choice, which bad game designers - video or P&P - do when they want to trick people into thinking they actually have a say in how they want to build a character. If you can't control the gains yourself, and have to rely on the road the developers set out, the only road you have is the only one they want you to have.

My rogue in DAO could use any number of things with his dual weapon specialization. I could put points into any number of statistics, meaning I drastically altered my play style. If I wanted to be Sneaky McStabbity, I could do that. If I wanted to be in heavy armor and fight on the front line, I could do that, too. I could use swords, daggers, axes, and maces - and that's just the things the tree covered. If I wanted to, I could even use greatswords, battleaxes, and mauls.

My DAI character, now? I get no say in my own attribute allocation. The stat gains in the tree are all Con/Dex. I have one weapon choice in melee, daggers.

Wrong. You will still be able to achieve just that through Crafting.

It's funny, considering how worked up all of you are over not being able to allocate points yourself, that at the same time you seem to be unwilling to give the alternative a chance.

This is female Qunari hair styles all over again, you're making mountains out of molehills.

Thank you. That what I've been trying to tell the guy from the start.

But what if you don't want to craft? What if you find it to be tedious and boring?

Then you're stuck with RNG loot and auto leveling.

The Dragon Age series has a huge identity crisis. Why all the sweeping changes with every sequel? Why not just go back to what made Origins so great?

It's surprising people rather take what 10 seconds doing attributes on a stat screen then the minutes it'll probably take gathering materials and crafting? (especially for those of us that don't like crafting in the first place) ?

..... Maaaaannnnnn. The more I find out the battle system, the less excited I'm getting.

1. There's no health regen!!/Me: OMGOMGYES.
2. Limited potions!/Me: BRING. IT. ON.
3. NO HEALING SPELLS!/Me: Uh...The cooldown wasn't enough..? Okay then!
4a. Access to only 8 abilities!!/Me: Um...
4b. NO RADIAL MENU!/Me: ...
5. Bye, attribute points!/Me: :'(

I'll try to wait and see. Maybe I'll love combat. I'm just getting increasingly worried that playing a mage is going to suck. >__>

rofl... this.  Exactly this.

Yeah, about that. Crafting is supposed to be optional. Nonessential. Voluntary. Discretionary. Non compulsory.

Mind telling me how I'm supposed to adjust my stats without resorting to the crafting system, then? The talents all direct you down the only path you're allowed, and the stats on level-up auto allocate, meaning you've got as variation as it sounds like. None.

You cannot stick a vital part of a character build on a system that is supposedly optional. It does not work that way.

Except every abilty rogues have in dao is based on cunning. How did you deal with that with your rogue in dao?

Did you not find a way around that? You can't do that with the customization ability in dai?

You argue because of the passives and ability in dai you can't make the build you what because it benefits other stats. The argument can be used for dao rogues.

Then it can't be that important to you. If it were, crafting your own personal, optimized gear would be a challenge and a goal you'd gladly work towards to.

Then you hit the auto lvl button.

Back when it was a choice and not forced.

To UNLOCK

Hmm.. unlock sounds weird donit? Could just be new terminology that says we GET 3 cunning for unlocking that skill. Unless there is hard facts to the contrary I see either as a possibility. Anyways, I'm a little butt hurt at the moment because some people don't seem to care about the funnest thing about DA for me and that is... stat manipulation. I want to be able to do this as many ways as is possible. Gear, abilities, level up, quests, paying for them, and even a weapon modifier.

And that gave you the standard character.

The same can be said for picking standard loot in DAI.

No difference.

No the hell it doesn't, either. If you don't take lethality, the damage modifier for a rogue - like a warrior - is strength. Therefore, if you follow the very simple pattern down the line, strength effects damage. You can be perfectly fine as a rogue with only putting as much Cunning in as you need to pick locks.

Ignore what I said. The passive unlocks 3 cunning.

And end up not being able to control my characters stats because of it.

But yeah I probably will end up having to put up with the random weapon drops to avoid crafting. Sad because I didn't have to do that to this before this game. And knowing BW their auto lvl will be subpar and make the game harder than it should be.

So is bioware going to explain us their reasons for this crap decision? First 8 ability limitation, now removing attribute allocation. What next?

Except the person picking auto lvl choose to make their character subpar because they didn't want to be bothered with attributes. My character ends up subpar because I don't want to be bothered with gear (because crafting BS is time consuming and annoying) and BW decides to make my attribute choices for me instead of letting me pick them (which takes a fraction of the time as crafting BS).

Did anyone ever even do that? Because I never auto lvl'd any of my characters ever, it just seemed so anti-roleplay to me. I took great pleasure in weighing the pros and cons and choosing just the right combo for the character I was playing.

I fully supported them not offering a demo for DAI, but with all the changes in combat and levelling recently revealed, I'm really wishing we had one now. :/

I think it's a bit silly to say this  simplification, more like they want you focus more on equipment crafting then stat management

I never auto-leveled myself but I would auto-level my companions.

BW's auto lvl isn't all that great which is why it being forced is why I'm "ehhh" and yeah same.

Agreed. All these changes really deserve a hand on demo.

Pretty much. My decision to buy this game when it gets cheap as opposed to buying it right out of the box is looking better and better by the minute.
