What they look like would be a cosmetic difference. Its not about the look of the weapons, its about the choice in weapons.

Being that you can make any dagger you want with any stat, what would be the difference?

Ok, you're using DA2 as a comparison point.

Considering the ability trees and perks look more involved in DA:I than in DA2, we can say based on that that there are more meaningful character builds in DAI than in DA2.

Now you want to talk about a "ton of character build options" based on stats?  Is my rogue hawke in DA2 with 40 dex and 35 cunning really that different from my rogue hawke in DA with 39 dex and 36 cunning?  Didn't think so.

All the meaningful customization choices in DA2 came from the abilities you used, anyway.

And you know the thing? I've never been able to finish more than one playthrough on a DA2 class run because the builds end up more or less the same due to the weapon choice and limited skill slots (yes, I am on a console). As opposed to DAO, which I've finished at least once with every origin and still can find new builds and weapon combinations.

Maybe, maybe not.  But I'm not really worried given that axes and longswords were really the same thing in DA:O, only with either slightly slower attack or armor penetration than the other, and a different model.  Your rogue still played and controlled the same despite what melee weapon you gave them.

You seem like the kind of person who just doesn't mind the removal of options, then.

And you know what, no, they don't. If I used my attributes differently - focusing on Str, with just enough Dex and Cunning to open up the dual wield trees and pick locks respectively, I was a damned effective front-line combatant. Wearing Heavy (Evon the Great's Mail/Wade's Dragonscale) or Massive (Calian's armor) armor and using an axe/longsword combo. That neither played like my sneaky, stabbity rogue nor my DW warrior.

But hey, you're obviously the expert and they all played and controlled the same, right?

Yeah, and the first two looked alright in most of the promo material, too. Hell, so did Aliens Colonial Marines, and look at how well that turned out from promo material to end product.

And I'm "crying" that Bioware has not only continued along the path from DA2 - removing a ton of character build options - they've taken a hatchet to the corpse that DA2 left lying on the ground. And I liked DA2 more than most.

So Bioware adds in Qunari, adds in the ability lead/build an Inquisition that has a significant impact on the games narrative, adds in Specializations that will be acknowledged by the game and acquired through quests, ensures all systems have a tactile camera, adds in an improved crafting system, more love interests, dialogue changes based on whether you are a human or elven mage, adds in attack differences between 2 handed hammers and 2 handed swords, gives each class an obstacle only they can overcome, allows you to improve attributes via talent/skill purchase, gives each character two slots to equip various grenades/potions and gives you two fully voiced sets per gender.

This is taking a 'hatchet' to DA2?

Yeah, bsn and fandom must be blindly optimistic and deluded while ignoring all warning signs and criticism even after TORtanic, ME3 and especially DA2.

I am seeing significantly more good than bad, see the above for examples.

No, gear works very differently now.  It is a template you equip with stats, and can recustomize and change.  You can keep the same gear from the beginning of the game, with the same appearance, but keep upgrading the stats as you choose.  There are no class-limited armors in this game.  There are penalties for mages wearing plate, I have heard, but they can still wear plate.  And you can further customize the plate to give you magic and willpower stats.

People aren't considering all the moving parts of DA:I working together. They are trying to imagine DA:O without customizable attributes instead, which is not what DA:I is.

No; am quite happy that the gear is customizable, as I was not a fan of every PC selecting the same gear. But I also quite enjoy having customized characters, too, and not the same design as another.

Let's say my rogue already has a better weapon but my warrior's gear sucks. I can't give it to him because it says it is "a dagger". My warriors can't handle that.

He is too daft apparently or ... I dunno why.

I'm confused why it matters so much to you.  It's arguably the most minor change made in this game.  I'd rather you complained about the removal of healing spells (which, for the record, I'm totally ok with as well).

I did complain about the healing spell. But that spell isn't the topic of this thread. No need to derail it.

Removing player power over the level up is hardly a minor change.

Really? Then how do I get new build options for my rogue? Where does the crafting system let me use an axe or a longsword?

Even if you you had a attribute system with dai like dao and da2 you still would not be using axes and longsword with rogues. Stop trying to move the goal post.

And it already been explained to you how you can make different builds for rogues in dai.

Funnily enough, I was talking about weapon models, not armor.  You'll be pleased to know ANY class can equip ANY armor in DA:I still.  You'll just be stabbing dudes with daggers while wearing plate, instead of with a slightly longer dagger called a longsword.  I'm sure all of your concerns are solved now.

PS. You can even give your plate armor any sort of attribute bonuses you wish with the incredible crafting system!  So you can have as much strength and as little dexterity as you please!  Excelsior!

I have. And did. And if it were still an option, I would. I don't care for dual daggers, and especially with the addition of Qunari, who just look ridiculous with them. Give me a sword/dagger combo any day over that nonsense. Or a sword/axe, or..

You can still do that.

Apparently not the case. Every Rogue will gain DEX and CUN at Lvl up; no choices for other Attributes. Thus the reason for this thread, I believe.

I think you just don't seem to understand the very concept of "choice". You really, really don't. And for the record, that character was using a Warden's Longsword and the Reaper's Cudgel at the end of the game.

Even if we had the old attribute system from dao and 2 with dai, the restriction on who can use weapons would be there. That was stated way before the details on how attributes were processed was announced. It's pointless to argue about that now and has nothing to due with the current issue.

It originally stemmed from:

* Difficulty in playing a Rogue in the Dwarven Commoner Origin; more armor helps.
* Liked the challenge of playing something that worked well after being informed it would not be viable (ie; dislike min/ max extremes).
* Wanted pants; not a skirt (ie; 'Shave my back and call me an Elf').

This character used the Warden's armor, as I recall; the Massive set from the Warden's Keep DLC. And while he may not have been optimal, he was unique; distinctive.

Now one cookie will be much the same as another, as done in the DA-MP selections. And I prefer something more personable and unique, esp in the solo game.

I don't follow your logic that they would be the same at all.  Sure, you can't play your rogue as a warrior anymore, but that's a far cry from saying that every build will be the same.

I suppose I'm just feeling a bit annoyed here that people are getting so upset over losing the option to play one class as if it were another when that defies the very notion of a class system.  For me, classes exist to be distinct, that's the point.  The developers' challenge is to make a variety of playstyles possible with that class, but if you want to dress and fight as a warrior... roll a warrior.  It just seems unreasonable to me.

God forbid that I liked DA2's combat better except the combat encounters being badly designed due to "Ninja's", an issue which was fixed in the DLC's.

Congrats with completely missing the point!

Do people have the right to criticise/worry a bit, little bit about certain aspects of DA:I without being called "naysayers", whiners etc? Some people are rightfully worried after a string of recent Bioware games.

You can be worried, as long as you accept that not everyone is going to agree with your reasons for worrying and will argue the point.
