Except that you can't really optimize anything that way, so if you want to create builds that aren't garbage, you have to craft.

Well, the devs never claimed you could beat nightmare without crafting. But normal should be plenty possible without crafting.

If you check out the new videos where someone level up there seams to be no attribute points to spend, only one skill point.

You do however get a few attribute points when picking a passive skill.

So my question is: will there be no attribute points on level up in Dragon age I?

Update:

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw 3m3 minutes ago

@Gladion20 No, assigning stats is not part of level up. They grow as you level, buy talents, and, notably, equip gear.

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw 2m2 minutes ago

@Gladion20 Notable because you can find, craft and upgrade a wider variety of gear with stats more directly under your control.

Update 2: Feel free to discuss and share your opinions but please, remember to keep it civil! <3

they are so lucky i already have it fully paid for on preorder and am addicted to the story, cause so far, from everything i heard about combat in this game, its going to suck so much ass, its going to become a chore and not be fun.

As if equipment having appropriate attributes/stats is something new...? I mean, I really don't get it - it's part of pretty much every RPG.

There's a big difference between gear-driven rulesets and attribute driven rulesets. DA:I (if it's anything like the other games) uses MMO-like gear growth, which IMO is the worst of all worlds when it comes to gear-driven rules.

I actually prefer fixed stats and gear-based growth; I just hate the way MMOs and DA:O/DA2 used it.

Now you have to actually find armour that lets you dump into your spell slinging, though. That's more aggravating.

I think this comment ignores one MAJOR thing.

A ton of our abilities carry boosts to those attributes. You seem to be suggesting that your character is gimped if you don't optimize gear, but not being entirely maxed out in every way is probably what most gamers do/ what the game is balanced for. It's not gimped.

They've said over and over crafting is an optional thing. So unless you're a powergamer/min-maxer who agonizes over the math that goes into the perfect build, I'm sure you'll be just fine with the boosts you get naturally as you select abilities and find new equipment.

And for those min-maxers...aren't they likely to enjoy crafting and micromanaging gear anyway?

But they've already said your attributes automatically increase on level up, and can increase again depending on what skills you learn so it's not totally loot based.

Well, no, it's loot based. Because the auto-growth is meaningless. It's just the static backdrop. The abilities thing is good and I do like it, it's the loot that I loathe.

I can't wait til I get a horde of nice shiny warrior drops and meh rogue and mage drops when I'm using a mostly mage and rogue party.

That's gonna be fun.

Are you imagining that this is a hard task? This isn't a dungeon crawler ie Diablo 3. You'll probably be getting gear that will augment your spell casting frequently enough.

Blood mage is not in this game, and you'd still need to pump majority of your attribute points into the primary and secondary attributes for your class or you wouldn't be able to equip the necessary gear.

Could always craft armor with the stats you want

I'm talking from a power-gaming POV. I hate crafting. I like power-gaming, but actually crafting tends to involve horribly tedious chores like riffling through what is literally garbage to find parts that you can use to craft.

Fair enough. And I wasn't trying to crap on power-gaming - some people love it, and that's fine. Not me, but to each their own.

I suppose we can hope crafting isn't too tedious. I don't generally like it either, but it looks intriguing to me this time around.

But it's not about "augmenting". It's about the opportunity cost, and augmenting it "properly". Let's pretend the stats work like DA:O. Armour that does +2 MAG and +2 WIS is worse compared to armour that gives +4 MAG for a mage, especially for a damage build. Getting a mage drop like the former and not the later is a problem.

And here i thought bioware couldn't gimp their game any further after the 8 ability lock and limiting healing. Then they announce this bs.

Calling it, more abilities and healing will be reintroduced DA4 as new and improved feature.

No, you just had to put points into your main skills to be able to use high level gear.

LMAO. Now every Inquisitor is Tony Stark and if you want to take on the Elder One you need to make the Hulk Buster if not, Your Journey Ends Here...

I had 20 constitution by the end of the game.

Edit: thats without any gear boosts too.

Two quick points on this:

First, I'm repeatedly seeing references to this idea that we won't be able to distribute attribute points on initial character creation, but haven't seen any evidence that this is actually the case based on Laidlaw's tweets. Anyone have any clarification on this?

Second, I'm actually okay not being able to increase attributes on level up. Attribute increases on level up always seemed like a tacky mechanic to me, as I was never sure what the numbers were supposed to mean. My Cunning starts at around 15-16, but deep into the game it's around 45; did I literally become three times more savvy during the course of the game? If not, are there diminishing returns on increasing attributes as your stats get higher and higher? In either case, I have no idea what these numbers are supposed to represent either mechanically or in-game.
