Why would they have been training before her found her? Wasn't she still a girl when she was rescued? There's really no more evidence that she became First despite being unqualified because Zathrian was reminded of his daughter than there is that she won the position based on her merits.

I never said that one theory was right and the other was wrong.  What I said was that there isn't enough evidence to disprove my own speculations.  Unless you have some proof that Lanaya is more powerful mage than the others?

 

Also, why wouldn't Zathrian have been training other mages before Lanaya showed up?  Elora looks much older than Lanaya, so I have to assume that the clan found out that Elora was a mage and started training her immediately after the discovery...  Lanaya eventually joining the clan would have had no bearing on this...

If Elora was in the running to become First, surely that would have been decided long before Lanaya was rescued by the clan. Since Merrill and Velanna are also Dalish Firsts and about the same age as her, I assume all Lanaya's rivals were her peers in age and experience.

So your entire argument is that Lanaya's hypothetical peers were weaker mages, and you think this is compelling proof even though they do not exist in-game and we have no way of determining whether or not she truly was the most powerful mage in the clan?  You really think that's strong enough to disprove the idea that Zathrian had a hand in tipping the scales in her favor?  I've given a rather detailed scenario based on evidence from the game (personalities, the existence of at least one mage that we know of, a rough timeline of events, etc), and all you have is a few imaginary peers who you assume are weak simply because Lanaya says she "worked hard" to earn her spot?  Seriously?

Your scenario does not fit with the timeline at all. Every single First we've ever seen is around Lanaya's age. If Elora was a candidate should would have been one already. I also didn't say that Lanaya's peers were weak, I said she was better. (they aren't imaginary, we know that Lanaya had to compete against others. What? You think she was lying about that or something?)

 

I don't see any reason to prove that Zathrian didn't stack the deck in the favor. It's purely speculation that he ever did such a thing in the first place.
