Hello everyone. This is the first time I create a topic of my own, so I appolagise if I am doing something wrong with this.

This is basicly something that has crossed my mind several times while thinking of a few things (namely, blood magic, lyrium, and darkspawn. Hence the title).

Ever since the red lyrium first appeared, I started to wonder about it. Where did it come from, why was it so different, and potently corrupting? I then started to think of how simular the taint that the darkspawn carry is to the effects of lyrium.

As most people know, lyrium can be used to increase the power of mages and spells, though it is addictive and can be harmfull to the body. In the case of red lyrium, it can even grant non-mages incredible powers (unless Varric heavily spiced up the story at the end). Both spirits and dwarfs mining for lyrium has said they can "hear" the lyrium, as if something is singing (even more so with red lyrium, as seen with Barthrand).

The Darkspawn taint share more then a few similarities. With it being harmfull to the body, and giving unnatural powers to those that drink it, even if they are not mages (all Grey Wardens being able to feel the darkspawn, and getting a small boost to stats in DA:O). With help, a Grey Warden may even use the taint in his blood to effects as powerfull as those cast by spells (to be specific, the Power of Blood in "Wardens Keep"). Even Genlocks, Darkspawn created by dwarven broodmothers, have mages amongst them, something that should not be possible, considering their dwarven ancestry.

There is however also another link. "The music". The Mother speaks of a music, most likely the call of the old gods. Anders, if brought along in Legacy, Anders also spoke of a noice, which seems to be a different, and more "personal" verions of the call. And then there is Gerav, that says the carta drank darkspawn blood, to hear "the music".

So, both lyrium and the taint causes people to hear a song, or music

So, this lead me to thinking...Is red lyrium, normal lyrium, and darkspawn connected?

The first blight did start down in the deep roads, attacking the dwarfs first. And, since the chantrys theory of the darkspawn being atleast somewhat correct, considering Corypheus, then one can also assume that the Tevinter Imperium did travel into the fade, using blood magic and alot of lyrium (two thirds of all the lyrium in the imperium, if I recall correctly). Is it then a possibility, that they did this ritual in the deeproads, where they might also tap into the raw lyrium that had yet to be undug?

Since the blood magic that the Tevinter Imperium used was sinister (using the blood of countless tormented slaves), is it perhaps possible that the veil got thinner, and corrupted the undug lyrium, and then spreading like an infection underground? Since the primeordial thaig in DA2 was abandoned before the first blight, this might be close to where they did the ritual, and the thinner veil scares the darkspawn away (with the stone itself becoming alive).

This all is however just a theory...does it make sence to anyone else, or have I just put way too much thought into things?

Very interesting. The primeval thaig, is the location where the magisters performed the ritual to enter the Fade. It explains the strange statues and the lyrium idol. I imagine that the magisters hired Dwarves to make the thaig. They made many prominent buildings in Kirkwall afterall.

Maybe the wardens saw the connection like you did, that's why they wanted to explore the ancient thaig. Good work op.

Tevinter and Dwarves had a really good relationship pre-blight and still do.

The partnership with a lone Tevinter mage (magister perhaps?) produced and a noble dwarf family what now know as Harvesters. Parasitic beings using bodies to form itself. This was created via using lyrium to weaken the veil + blood magic.

I wonder if Ancient magisters plus alot of dwarvs did something similar, but on a higher scale?

It could also mean that the Magisters and the Dwarves found the red lyrium and saw how potent it was, they decided to make the primeval thaig. It would have put them close enough to the red lyrium so they could tap into it and use it to boost their powers.

It could also be that red lyrium is corrupted lyrium that the magisters combine raw lyrium and blood to see if it could boost the potency of the lyrium itself. Which would also connect it to the darkspawn because the same spells they used to 'corrupt' the lyrium were used to enter the 'golden city'.
