What exactly are the mutations that Lyrium caused in mages? Has anyone ever gone into detail? Could the Lyrium and not some maker be behind the Darkspawn taint? Seems to me using 2/3 of the Lyrium in the Tevinter Imperium would of had other consequences then helping to gain entry into the Golden City as dangerous a substance as it is supposed to be. Could the combo of massive amounts of Lyrium and Blood Magic combine to create the Darkspawn Taint? As far as the Old Gods and Archdemons they could be just really powerful but mortal Ancient High Dragons who like every other being is susceptible to the taint.
Question about Lyrium use.

I always pictured the mages who'd gone that far into lyrium addiction as looking somewhat like an Arcane Horror, though I have absolutely no canon material to back that up. In fact, I don't think there is any canon material covering the specifics of the mutations that lyrium causes. So for all I know, they could very well be mutated the same way that chimera-creating wizard from Looking For Group was.
Alternatively, it might be that the mutations don't really exist, and the Chantry's just lying in order to keep the mages from going too far in their lyrium use and to further demonize the Tevinter Magisters. Or it might be that they honestly believe a lie that was originally created for those reasons. (While I don't think that this conspiracy theory is true, it doesn't seem all that far-fetched for a setting like this.)

I imagined extra limbs when I read that... maybe something along the lines of...
