I looked around the wiki and WoT but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, so here's a question for you forumites.

The dwarves (proximity to the Taint adversely affects fertility; neverending war with the darkspawn results in a constantly dwindling population) and the elves (crazy elf genetics means they can eventually be bred out; bloody conflicts with humans only getting worse as of TME) are in pretty dire straits. Assuming nothing gets better, which race is most likely to go first?

And no, "the elves will because my Quizzy will sLAUGHter THEEEm!!1" or "the dwarves because that much facial hair near that much lava is a serious fire hazard" are not good answers. :P

I have no idea what the population of elves is in Thedas. I know they outnumber humans in the Dales. Then you've got all the Alienages, the wandering Dalish, Tevinter's slaves which I believe are mostly elven... I won't even touch Par Vollen.

Apparently Orzammar's population is over 100,000 but then there's also Kal-Sharok, not to mention all the surface dwarves...

So yeah. Who's kicking the bucket first?

Dwarves yeah...considering there are only two major cites left. So either they make an exodus to the surface, or we discover a permanent solution to deal with the Darkspawn.

Neither, as Bioware won't eliminate any of their races, especially not before the series is over.

Hmmm..well how large is the surface dwarf population? If they're large enough that, even if their underground kin die, they can repopulate, hen I'd say they're equal with elves (might survive, might just end up being absorbed into human bloodlines) if the cities underground don't hold.

Well, the dwarven fertility problem is probably a hitch in the dwarven survival plan. Though if it's due to proximity to the Darkspawn, I wonder if surface dwarves share that problem...

The most likely is Dwarves. A well orchatrated Blight or maybe even war with the humans will wipe out the last remaining thaigs. It seems like they are more focused at marrying/ interbreeding with each other. Not sure about surfacer fertility.

Elves are pretty decent shape

Surface dwarves are still tainted, if I recall. So all dwarves leaving for the surface won't change anything. Tha dwarves are pretty much hosed unless someone magics up a cure for the taint.

Dwarves would easily kick the bucket first out of any of the major races.

Probably Dwarves; only two major cities, constantly fighting darkspawn, have fertility problems due to proximity with darkspawn. Also I don't think the surface dwarf population is that large and they're fairly spread out on the surface except for in Tevinter. So yeah they're most at risk for going extinct, sad thing is they'd probably be fine if they didn't insist on living mainly underground ._.

Where would they go? I guess they could migrate into the Kokari wilds where no established Nation sits. It will be quite the task. But considering the survival of your race is on the line, they will have to make do.

Heh, this is most likely the case. To be fair though, it's not really about which will disappear, but rather which one is at the most risk. Between elves and dwarves, dwarves have it worse. Of the two races, dwarves have much bigger problems to deal with, neither of which can be resolved through any sort of justice system. If the end of the DA saga sees the ultimate end of the darkspawn themselves, then that would obviously change.

Before Bhelen I'd have said the Dwarves.

Now though? They're gonna be fiiiiiine.

Lol good question...not entirely sure but staying underground continually fighting darkspawn and taint doesn't seem to be working out so well. Maybe they could go to the Free Marches? Establish their own city-state or near their allies in Tevinter?

Elves, because most of them end up with humans and having human children. Dwarves at least have half-dwarf children.

Agreed.

I'm surprised how many people think the dwarves would be the first to go. It does make sense... I mean, even disregarding the fertility thing, Rica says that every noble she's met has had a brother or nephew killed in the Deep Roads, and all it would take is a big enough incursion for Orzammar to go bye-bye...

I still think the elves are in trouble, though. There seem to be more interracial relationships than the lore implies, and no small number of those are bound to produce babies. Very human babies.

Neither, as Bioware won't eliminate any of their races, especially not before the series is over.

It's a hypothetical question. No meta allowed. :P

I'd say dwarves. They're still mired in the caste system and don't value all dwarven babies equally (e.g. Zerlinda's Woe in DA:O). Also, they've wasted dwarven souls to make those golems, too. And then there's the fertility problem that has already been established here. They will also throw dwarven lives at reclaiming lost thiags. Noble hunters rise in rank if they produce sons since it's based on the father's caste, which in turn devalues female babies. If they abandon those babies in the Deep Roads, then there will be fewer women for breeding and so on. Seems like the worst elves deal with are arranged marriages. =p

Exactly. Even without Golems or surface assistance Bhelen is able to reclaim a few thaigs probably the first time the dwarves have legitimately been on the offensive in centuries.

More importantly his social and trade reforms will increase Orzammar's force limits and economic base with the nifty side effect of reducing the number of criminals running around!

I guess it's a good thing I put Behlen on the throne he seems willing to work with humans.  As to the op, I was first going to say elves, then changed my mind and will have to agree with others, the Dwarves.  Hmmm, I don't know, that dwarves with their long beards next to a lava flow made me laugh.  I could see that happening in a game and our hero saves the poor dwarf.  For helping him he lends us aid on our quest!  Hehe!

Maric's elf fetish creeped me out. :(

Not that there's anything wrong with liking elves. I like elves. It's just... something about it rubbed me the wrong way.

Neither.

Elves: Eventually the Dalish will return to the Dales, either peaceful means or they will reconquer it. Assuming

Spoiler
can be found, it's likely Arlathan will one day resurface.

Dwarves: Even if their underground population is diminished, which is unlikely due to their relatively advanced technology, they still have a significant above-ground population.

:D Anyway just my opinion.

I think it's the fact that he kept bringing up their elvishness.

"There was a beautiful woman... WHO WAS AN ELF. She had lovely ELF eyes. She was slender and delicate... like an ELF! With pointed ELF EARS!"
