According to Varric there are 'tens of thousands' of dwarves living on the surface. They may breed better up there without the lyrium and the darkspawn getting in the way, so I don't think they're in danger of actually going extinct any time soon. It's hard to say how their population compares with that of the elves, of course.

(Fun fact of the day: there's a respected school of thought which argues that the human population was reduced to around ten thousand a mere seventy thousand years ago. The population may have been even lower during the era we were all confined to sub-Saharan Africa.)

The real answer to this question is the Fex. They're confined to Par Vollen and largely intergrated into the Qun, so unless the Ben Hassrath have a large Fex breeding program, I doubt there are many left.

They were integrated into the Qun?

Toba ftl.

Depends if Bhelen or Whatsisname is in charge, Bhelen is forward thinking enough, they will be fine, whatsisbutt closes the doors of Orzamar, so yeah, they'll be dead from isolationism.

I think it's the fact that he kept bringing up their elvishness.

"There was a beautiful woman... WHO WAS AN ELF. She had lovely ELF eyes. She was slender and delicate... like an ELF! With pointed ELF EARS!"

Not to mention that idiotic, insipid, MarySue Fiona.  Ugh.  I simply cannot side with the mages in this game, ever.  :(

Solas is not a trustworthy source. Even if he isn't lying (and he is damn well capable of lying) everything he says is true from a certian point of view.

Also could someone give me citations on dwarven infertility?

I'll see if I can find the thing on dwarven fertility. As far as I know, it's been affected by the darkspawn taint.

Solas really doesn't have a reason to lie about that, though. The ancient elves' immortality might be due to some weird spirit possession thing or a million other magical possibilities, but I doubt it's blood magic.

Human DNA seems to be the strongest since a human-elf kid comes out a human, and a human-dorf kid comes out a human.

Human x dwarf pairings don't make humans, they make half-dwarves.

Which is apparently really difficult due to the dwarves already having trouble in the babymaking department.

What trouble in baby making? King Endrin had three childs. Warden Aeducan can have a son from a one night stand. Bhelen has a son. Beraht's big plan involves a dwarf girl getting pregnant. An Orzammar mission involves an unwanted pregnancy. Varric was born on the surface and had at least two siblings. Where does this nonsense idea comes from?

Half dwarf difficulty probably comes from humans and dwarves being, you know different races.

That is horrifying! I think i threw up in my mouth a little.

I don't see the big deal about Fiona she doesn't look attractive to me at all and the accent, no thank you but I only know her from DAI.

Indeed it is sickening...but cause you know....cause magic I assume there are no drawbacks if the DR is done with Ali and Morri

This "nonsense idea" comes from WoT, page 34. Dwarves obviously reproduce, but compared to the other races their birth rate is a lot lower. That's what living in close proximity to the darkspawn does to you, and why Grey Wardens have their own fertility problems.

Woop, found it:

However, their proximity to the darkspawn takes its toll on the population. Those who survive encounters on the Deep Roads often suffer from corruption-caused infertility. The result is an ever-dwindling dwarven population that is small by surface standards.

When it comes to population from most to least I'd say Human > Elf > Dwarf = Qunari

Qunari are unknown, but I do believe they at least outnumber dwarf
