Is there a lore reason for why these human mini-boss characters we've been seeing in gameplay vids look like they've eaten nothing but HGH pills since birth? In one of the new gameplay vids, the Inquisitor is fighting some armored bandit commander who looks like he might outmatch Iron Bull for size. It's more than a little silly and incongruous. Does it have something to do with the Veil tear, or all that red lyrium or something? Or did BioWare just decide that they wanted more powerful enemies to be HUUUUGE, just because? The former I can accept easily enough, though it would still be a little silly. But if it's the latter, my only choice will be to chuckle and roll my eyes out of my sockets while I'm playing. ![]()

Probably red lyrium at this point. The gameplay we saw had some connections with the material so it makes sense. If not, yup it is a little ridiculous.

I'm hoping they are all Qunari that we've seen thus far, because a dude twice the height of Cass is one of the things I like the least about JRPGs, the exaggerated weapons and bosses.
Worst case in 6-9 months there will be a mod shrinking them to human levels.

Its a VIDEO GAME about a FANTASY world think we can live with relatively minor details such as those
I think you think I'm more bothered about it than I am. I just think it would be a little silly and bit excessively... well, "gamey" for lack of a better word. "Gamey" like old arcade game sort of thing as opposed to a more "serious" title. I though the same thing about DA2's gore. I did the same thing. Chuckled, rolled my eyes, and had fun anyway because it's not something that seriously irritates me. Just something I would prefer were done differently, unless there really is a lore reason.

I haven't seen what you're referring to, but look at guys in the NFL or NBA. There are guys that are 6.5 to 7+ feet tall that weigh 300+ pounds. So I can see a large human running a bandit group or something like that.

Yeah the Avvar leader was kinda weirdly big if he was human. I assumed h was just qunari under that hood.

Not large like that. Large as in literally twice as tall as Cass:

I already made a post about this back in Feedback & Suggestions. These supersized baddies follow an archetype known colloquially as "Giant Mooks". As per the definition on TvTropes.org:
"A minion or henchman too big, strong or well 'ard to be an ordinary mook, but not interesting enough to be The Dragon, the Big Bad, a member of the Quirky Miniboss Squad, a King Mook or even an Elite Mook. Giant mooks usually require more effort to kill than ordinary mooks; the hero may need to land a series of nasty martial-arts blows before they sink to their knees (they don't go flying when you hit them). Sometimes they may seem too strong for the hero to kill, but then be fortunately (for the hero) caught up in a machine."
"Giant Mooks often lead mook squads. Usually the laws of Mook Chivalry dictate that they attack alone, after their underlings have been easily dispatched".
"Video games, particularly Brawlers, First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter games, are full of these. Many of these monsters start out as the de facto boss monster of the game's first or second episode or segment, having their strength diluted in their appearances later in the game."
My own forum post "What's with al the Giant Mooks?" already goes in depth on the matter.

Wow, never mind that. That looks closer to Ogre size. Maybe it's a Half-Ogre...

If you look at an earlier video featuring the Carta and Darkspawn you will notice that the dwarven Carta Leaders are actually as tall as a human player.

...it'd be interesting if that actually turned out to be the Carta being run by half dwarves.

Whose idea was this and why would they think it was good to ruin the point in being called a dwarf if you're that tall. That just makes him a human

I will admit that when I saw that part about really big humans I was OK with it and tried to think of reasons for it, but when I saw this my first thought was no, that can't be right. Don't do this to me. I like Dwarves and I like them shorter than humans.

I was willing to accept that the Avvar are above average in size because we don't see them too often... maybe they've mutated or something. But Commander Duhaim is a normal man and there is no excuse for him being 9-10 feet tall. And don't even get me started on the human-sized dwarf... ugh... just, no.

Yeah, I was fine with the chief as well. I just figured he was a freak of nature like Gregor Clegane, and he rose to become war chief or what have you because of his bulk.
But now it seems like every leader you face looks like a hairless Gigantopithecus:

Unless there is some lore explanation for it like the veil tears or red lyrium turning people into giants, it's a bit jarring. Humans just aren't that big.

The sad part is that this is actually a very accurate comparison (sad, but I'm still rofl though... xD). Shave that creature, dress it in heavy armor, and that's Duhaim.

Yeah, I noticed that one too. Having taller than average mooks in the game is fine, and monsters like Hurlock Alphas are OK, and Avvars are IIRC bigger than normal humans, but every giant mook being a 10 feet tall half-ogre that dwarfs even Iron Bull is just silly unless there's a solid lore reason for it.

Wow....after all the gameplay changes this one for some reason made me laugh because of how absurd it is.I mean a human sized dwarf???Did Bioware forget that dwarves are supposed to be short and them being tall just means they are regular sized people?
And those giant sized dudes??Did the population of Thedas experience a growth spurt or something?
