I didn't like this either, it seemed ok for the Avvar but Duhaim was just silly. I hope the game isn't full of these.  :(

Red lyrium. I mean look at the size of the red lyrium behemoths.

I could see that working, since all of the giant mini bosses we've seen so far have been around it, except for the Avvar, all of whom are rather large anyway.

Still, I think the actual explanation is that it is supposed to help you tell the mini boss from his minions. I don't know why they didn't go with a more subtle approach, but if I had to guess, that is the real reason behind the sudden uptick in gigantism we have here.

Yeah, I noticed that one too. Having taller than average mooks in the game is fine, and monsters like Hurlock Alphas are OK, and Avvars are IIRC bigger than normal humans, but every giant mook being a 10 feet tall half-ogre that dwarfs even Iron Bull is just silly unless there's a solid lore reason for it.

Rule of Cool is the obvious culprit here.Bioware probably thought players would feel like badasses if they can defeat 10 ft tall mooks.

Since it's evidently not specific to the Avvar, I don't think it really works for them either now. It's just the same stupid design choice, it's not because Avvar be large.

I had the same thought as OP.  For Templars I thought maybe it is the red lyrium but I see quite a bit of them.

So are we going to have a 12 foot qunari superboss?

Just seems like a game trope where a bigger character is a boss type foe.

I personally don't like that kind of thing. He'd only need to be about 25% shorter for it to fall under the possibility of merely being a large guy. There are a ton of other ways for them to make a character look imposing and dangerous.

I totally agree.  In Da2, many of the bosses gave an aura that strengthened their men and had slightly better looking armor.  They could do the same here.

It literally ruins the point of a dwarf being called a dwarf, now the Carta leader is just buff humans with an inability to dream... Bioware broke the lore

And literally threw the definition of dwarfism out the window.

Its like saying "yea we put mermaids in the game, except they have no tails, they just walk on two legs.....i dont even think they can swim"

It's a walking contradiction if I ever saw one, much like the tall dwarve. This reminds me of a skit on Robot Chicken for some reason.

At around 9:50 you can see him next to Cassandra for comparison.

Talk about immersion breaking. I would want to know Bioware's rationale behind this move.

Red lyrium dust makes you big and strong...

But does it really matter its a fantasy world, could be any number reasons on why such a person got big..

Over thinking is at bad at times, or so I have been told.

That's really insulting. Do the devs think we players are so dumb that we can't tell the difference between bosses and minions on our own?

A little room for creative design is fine, but going this far after having an established lore is just a bit ridiculous.

Yes its fantasy but you cant just break the rules whenever because..."its fantasy". Its like having a batman comic where the joker becomes the size of a building, yes its a comic book where lots of fictional things happen but when you already establish who the joker is, then make him that size, it undermines the point of the character.

Same can be said about the dwarf, what separates them from all of Thedas IS their size, so when you just make them as tall as a human, it really just ruins the point of the design.

Big guy bad you run or he pound you in ground

But yeah, I think it's a gameplay thing where if you see a big guy it's an immediate indication you need to deal with them first or be cautious how you approach them. The game is more about prep from what I've seen similar to DAO. They will punish you for just running in to engage Bigfoot standing by his lonesome minding his own business. I don't know if it will be lore related but since Bioware usually does that when they make a gameplay change like this I wouldn't doubt it. I think it has more to do with gameplay though so the player can easily identify enemies in a crowd when they're not using the pause+play tactic.

Maybe these guys have an explanation as to why they're taller than Bigfoot himself. I don't think it's breaking any lore that we know about yet since we still don't know a lot about our enemy.

Long ago, in times best forgotten, a pack of female giants in heat attacked a village. The women and children, they devoured, but they took prisoner a number of the men, including a stout dwarven blacksmith.

Unfortunately for the survivors, the giants were in heat, and the resulting mating ended with their deaths. Only the dwarf survived long enough to relate the tale to others; he eventually took his own life by dashing his head on a rock.

Though impressive in size, the resulting half-breeds were more man than giant, and they eventually integrated themselves into society. Their descendants have since spread throughout Thedas.

Ever since, half-giants have been an infrequent but not uncommon occurence in the lands of Thedas; no matter how far removed they are from their giant ancestors, something in the blood causes a periodic resurge in these monstrous descendants ... especially since the return of dragons.

Thats just treating the players like they're dumb, i simple color scheme for their name or something of that sort wouldve sufficed. Imagine if someone helping you through the game was saying "Red name mean bad.....Big guy with red name mean REALLY bad" its just insulting our intelligence if this is actually the case
