According to the World of Thedas, the first humans claimed they came to Thedas becaus they were fleeing the wrath of a "Dark Goddess".

Sorry, I don't fear people I've killed and saved the lives of.

When Morrigan asks you to slay her she tells you "she isn't as invulnerable as she would have you believe". Case in point, she separated a piece of herself to be reborn far away after the Warden kills her

Honestly, I don't think she was trying against the warden. She was definitely holding back/testing him. After all, she needed him as well as Hawke to fulfill their destinies.

If that were true, she would just leave, not die. There's a difference between holding back and being defeated. People who hold back don't let themselves die.

She also tells Hawke it was "just a small piece" so most of her power was still in her when the Warden fought her. Flemeth is powerful and she has lots of abilities but to quote Morrigan again, "she is no immortal, a blade to the heart would kill her just as it would anyone else". Mages in DA, even top tier ones (certain DAO builds notwithstanding) aren't invincible gods like in say, Diablo, where high level magic users like Zultan Kulle can just let themselves be stabbed while they laugh in their attacker's face

Unless she has something to gain by making her opponents believe themselves successful in killing them... which is quite what Flemeth is angling for in that scene. She even offers you to go that route without a fight (by telling Morrigan, untruthfully, that you killed her); it's only when you refuse and press the issue that she fights you... just to make you, and, by extension, Morrigan, believe so.

I think she simply wants Morrigan off her back for a while. For what reason, I don't know -- it could be that after keeping Morrigan under close watch for 20+ years, she wants her to grow further, which can only be achieved if she stops sitting on her 'mum's' lap / cooking rabbits in the swamp. It could also be that Morrigan is getting uncomfortably close to issues Flemeth would not want her poking around in. Who knows.

Death seems to hardly be an inconvenience for Flemeth. Why not play the part if so much can be gained by it?

-- As to what she really is, man, don't I want to know. I like most theories here (the goddess one being my favourite), but I'd also like to suggest that if she is an abomination, a pride demon would be a likely candidate -- sometimes understatement can fuel the ego better than any conceited boast. On the other hand, I personally don't really buy the demon theory as Flemeth is indeed more powerful than any demon we've seen (even the dreaded what's-his-name in the quest Asunder in the Deep Roads, who is renowned to be among the most powerful demons ever), and, more importantly, she does not seem evil.

In fact, she reminds me a bit of the Reapers post-reveal in ME3. "Unknowable" (and unimaginably powerful). The Reapers clearly transcend the categorization as "good" or "evil", just like Flemeth does.

In short... I'd LOVE to learn more about her.

Flemeth was actually dead there. That's why she needed Hawke to get her a new body from Sundermount.

I think whatever she has planned...stopping her will be nigh impossible.
