The first book of history in the Western canon, Thoukydides' History of the Peloponnesian War, was written by a man who served as a general and politician on the losing side. Not only did he fight for the city that lost the war, he belonged to an internal faction in that city that lost out politically: a double loser.

Defeated parties manage to get their version of events popularized all the time. Loads of people are suckers for a glorious and noble loser. The Christians' histories of the Crusades are more widely used than those of Muslims (and a fairly specific band of Christian histories at that, but leave that alone). Most people learn the French (republican, non-communard) side of the crisis of July 1870 and the war that followed it. Most Americans learn a version of the history of their Civil War that has been deeply predicated on several implicitly pro-Confederate assumptions. And so on, and so forth.

The Dalish elves' failure to spread a popular account of their side of the war has little to do with the mere fact that they lost. It's more about how and why they lost, and their response to that defeat as a society.

Killing Merril's clan or not was always a tough question for me. Honestly, letting a demon possess you just because you love someone was something I really admire from Marethari.... However, it was really difficult for me to say, do I finish that quest? and if yes, do I kill the Dales? It is a crazy question.
