No more EA/Bioware game for me. I was so looking forward to Mass Effect 2 and SWTOR MMO.
I got retail version and I wont be able to get a refund cause the box is open. $50 down the drain.
Im going to write a report on amazon.ca about this game.

Not buying Mass Effect 2 and SWTOR till EA/Bioware gets their act together and stops using us as their alpha/beta testers.
Cant believe they didnt test this game on the 3870 considering their are tons of people using that gc.

Why not?
It's only users with ATi Cards, and apparently, only 45% of the gamer market isnt good enough to get the attention for a fix/patch.

At this point for me, I have moved on to other games. I beat it once, slogging through crashes all the way, modifying graphical settings constantly in order to bypass crashes in places like Denerim and Lothering, having to replay the last battle because if I did it one way instead of another it just loaded forever and ever without doing an ending or epilogue. I don't really have the will to complete subsequent playthroughs with all the workarounds, and knowing that completing it will just cause the game to freeze.
It's sort of 1.03 or nothin at this point. Which is worrisome since the fixes that hopefully will be in 1.03 were already pushed out of 1.02, and the community guy who was posting updates hasn't done so in more then 2 weeks now. Doesn't bode well.

But ATi is unaware of this problem, and probably dont really know what to do about it.
If this was a problem on ATi's side, they would of had fixed it with 9.10 or at least 9.12 drivers.

Anyways, i have no confirmed that this is infact an BioWare problem, and NOT an ATI problem.
I played past the bugged area on another computer, and then loaded the save on this computer, and now the game plays like a charm.

First thing first.
IF YOU'RE NOT SURE WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
THEN GET SOMEONE THAT KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING TO HELP YOU.
---------------
1. Download Riva Tuner 2.2.4 2009. ( downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.24c-download-163.html )
2. Install Riva Tuner 2.2.4 2009.
3. Start Riva Tuner 2.2.4 2009.
Write down your default (current settings) Core & Memory clock values.
So you can easily reverse the UnderClocking.
Now, follow these steps "carefully".
Make sure that your card is NOT overclocked already.
----------------------
1. In Riva Tuner, click the [Customize] button, right next to your graphics card drop-down menu.
2. Click the [Low-Level system settings] button (looks like a graphics card, icon furthest to the left).
3. Check "Enable low-level hardware overclocking".
4. Set Core clock to 740.0 (finetune with arrowkeys Left-Right)
5. Set Memory clock to 1100.0 (finetune with arrowkeys Left-Right)
6. Click Apply then OK.
7. Click OK to close Riva tuner.
8. Start CCC and view overdriver to check that the card has been successfully underclocked.
9. Monitor the heat for a while in IDLE, if it stays around 60-63 or lower, then you're ok. Close CCC.
10. Start up Dragon Age: Origins.
11. Go to the game graphics settings.
12. Un-Check "Play in Full-screen mode".
13. Un-Check Vertical Sync.
14. Un-Check Frame-Buffer Effects.
15. Set Anti-Aliasing to off.
16. Set Desired Resolution, Graphics Detail and Texture Detail.
17. Apply the settings.
18. If you have a single Core CPU, then you are done now. enjoy playing if it works.
----
For everyone with a DualCore CPU or QuadCore CPU, do this as well.
1. Start taskmanager (CTRL+ALT+DEL)
2. Right Click DAOrigins.exe and select "Set Affinity".
3. Un-check
4. Check ONLY CPU 0.
Exit Task Manager & enjoy the game.
--------------
This is how i fixed this problem with my HD 3870 card, using the latest 9.12 drivers and Win7 Ultimate x86.
This might make the game more playable, but it MIGHT still crash now and then, so remember.
Press F5 to save, often..
---
Share this guide with everyone that has the problem.
BioWare and ATi, YOU S*CK, you worthless bastards.
Having to let us poor bastards figure out this one by ourselfs.
EDIT:
Fixed a few typos, added download link to Riva Tuner 2.2.4 2009.

Nice tutorial... However I will say, these fixes aren't an over night thing. Programming takes time and testing. It could be more than one problem that they're working on. They could be ignoring the posts because there are simply too many to attend to. Once you answer one public question you have to answer them all.
EDIT:
Also, if you're fix doesn't work for one person, you'll get questions on what they should do. Which will lead to more questions, and even more questions. Have fun answering them all

If you combine a HD3870 with a Multicore CPU, the graphics card, will for some reason, overheat.
Therefore, underclocking the graphics card and setting the CPU Affinity to CPU0, helps.
And if it doesnt help, well.. then you're one unlucky bastard, and you've only got 2 choices left..
Wait for Patch or buy a new card.

Now as far as the people who have gotten to enjoy the game or have done some kind of work around to get the game to work. Thank you for the solutions since as far as everything I have read the under clocking thing works like Zethell has said.
Now as far as the other people who say "go buy another video card" or suggesting to get a "whole different computer."
I'm sorry, I didn't buy the game to buy a whole new computer when the one I run right now is just having problems with this one game. I rather just go buy a whole new game.

The only blame bioware have is that there must be inefficent code running, because you can stand still, out of combat and still see the CPU overheating accure.
#45
Posté 04 janvier 2010 - 10:32
Problem is..
a conflict between the gamecode, the multicore CPU and the graphics card.
Anyways, the underclocking fix works like a charm, and you wont loose more than 1-5 FPS

I use a Geforce 9600 and Dual core Duo with Windows XP but when it crashes it displays an error message where 2 options Send Error Report- Close if anyone can help, please do, didnt get my DLC codes to waste 100 bucks.
EDIT: I might also add it ALWAYS crashes at the same spot with any class.
EDIT2: Nevermind that, i chose a different dialogue option, and it worked, odd really, who cares?
