Can you guys help me? Can I run the game on my laptop?

Intel i7-4500U CPU 1.80GHz

Radeon HD 8850m 2GB GDDR5

8MB RAM

Windows 8

Resolution 1366x768, but I don't mind playing it on 720p, I honestly don't see the difference.

generally speaking, what graphical option affect CPU performance the most? is AA and Post Process relatively CPU dependent? because i notice a huge leap of performance by turning off AA setting in most games.

Most graphics options don't really affect CPU usage nearly as much as GPU usage. An exception would be anything physics related, since physics computations is usually a CPU-oriented task. However few games give you an option to tweak physics settings.

Most non-post-process AA techniques are fairly demanding on the GPU. Along with ambient occlusion and resolution, they're one of the few options that you can be sure will incur a heavy performance cost. They are not, however, very CPU-intensive. You can try using FXAA or another post-process AA method, though, since those usually offer decent image quality with almost no performance cost.

Thanks. Is there a way to check the RAM to see if it is ddr3 or 2? I swore when I bought the extra 4GB I bought DDR3 cause DDR5 was too expensive, but besides pulling it out, any other way?

what clock does your RAM have? btw, DDR5 RAM isnt existing yet, and even DDR4 RAM is only supported by Intel´s high-end platform 2011-3.

With the PSU, any way to know what its W is besides opening up the case and seeing? Considering how old the computer is, and how dusty, I may need to get a new case, any suggestions on a decent cheap case?

no way to check it with any software, so you have to open the case. remember: more important than how many W it have is its manufacturer.
i cant help you with the case, sorry.

"real" AA (MSAA, SSAA) is extremeley demanding exclusively for the gpu, and it has no effect on the cpu if you have 8xMSAA activated or no AA at all.

your i7 is a dualcore with HT and up to 2,7GHZ under full load, if the game doesnt "block" CPUs with less than 4 physical cores you should be fine with it.
same with your gpu, it is about as half as powerful as the GTX660, but in your resolution it should be enough for medium settings i guess.

Well if it's DDR2, it's more than likely very slow and not going to help with DA:I. The vast majority of PC gamers have DDR3 now and I believe devs mean DDR3 when they list the RAM specs. I'm sure the standard will become DDR4 soon enough now that it's been released.

Yeah, should be fine. GPU is slightly old but not bad.

Not sure if DA:I is going to be Low-Med-High-Ultra but if so I'd guess you'll be set for mostly high settings.

Yeah the GPU is a bit old.

Still, high is good.

Thanks.

Well the good news is I have the ram with 16gbs and my video card barely made the cut with a gtx 660 ti. The bad news is my cpu didn't make the cut with a amd fx 4350 quad-core 4.2ghz.. or did it? Either way I bought a amd fx 8370 8 core 4.3ghz earlier today.

Does Nvidia have anything like Mantle? I hope they'll release a driver update to better optimise settings for DA:I when the game is released.

Nice to see that the recommended is 2GB :D

Most games don't have any options that are CPU bound. Rarely, a game may have a CPU based physics option, or AI options. For example, a few of the Total War games have options for AI density. More AI=more calculations for the CPU to process. So yeah, generally speaking, games don't have options that affect CPU performance. But certain graphical options can be set to higher settings to take load off CPU. Some games will put some of the load on the CPU if you put settings on low for example(the game assumes you have a weak GPU).

In your case, I'd suspect playing on med or low wouldn't make a difference in terms of performance, maybe he even high. So, when DA:I does come out, I'd just default to high settings. Make your character and the first time you're able to walk around or whatever, see how it feels. If it's smooth, great. No further work needed. If not, just try turning down a couple settings to medium. It may sound tedious but this way you'll get the best possible combo of performance and visuals, opposed to just default to everything medium, everything high etc. Tweaking will yield the best results.

@Kantr, Nvidia doesn't have anything separately named like Mantle, but with each driver release they've been working on solutions very similar to mantle. I just don't think they'd ever make it a separately named thing, it would just be a part of the latest drivers. All mantle is is an APU that allows games to have more direct access to the GPU. Think of drivers as middleware, and the GPUs power has to pass through that to get to the game. Now what mantle does is it essentially minimizes that 'middleware' and gives a more direct path to the GPU. I'm not the best with analogies so sorry if that's unclear.

That's my current build guys. Thinking I could probably slice budget down a the motherboard and the ram. Any recommendations on motherboard? I really like ASUS though and have a hard time trusting ASROCK/MSI due to bad experiences. Never tried Gigabyte. I have extra storage but I need that SSD to go with my extra storage. I could probably get a not superclocked card but it's only $20 extra so why not. I don't really have a set budget as I was originally going to spend $2k and get a 5820k build but I've since sliced it down. Maybe I can get it closer to $1600 but I don't want to sacrifice too much. I could probably do without on some mobo features just as long as I have decent overclock capability and the motherboard is built very sturdy with gaming in mind.

Depends on who the OEM that manufactures that PSU. If it's someone like CWT I don't want anything to do with it. SeaSonic is top of the line and skimping on a bad PSU will destroy your entire system. Build quality is important for PSUs and SS is the best at it. They're efficient and have outstanding build quality. I don't want to end up replacing all my components a year from now because a bad PSU went nuts in it. Who builds EVGA PSU? Superflower?

My current/old board is ASRock and I've had Gigabyte in the past, fortunately my experiences have been very positive and solid performing boards. I'm seeing a LOT of people getting the latest MSI boards too, so seems like a your-mileage-may-vary? I'd say nothing wrong with going Asus either, I like their stuff too.

When I dropped to a lower sale priced MSI from a pricier "gaming" mobo, I noticed all I really lost was onboard optical audio, but a separate sound card was still cheaper combined and I'm hearing (ha, pun) that the audio quality will actually be better. Pick and choose the features you need and go with a brand you trust. It's probably worth a few extra bucks for peace of mind.

replace the 980 with a 970, it has maybe 10% less power than the 980 but is significantly cheaper.
i doubt that this CPU-cooler is that great when you overclock your CPU, go for something bigger like the Thermalright HR-02 Macho or Noctua NH-U14S (expensive, but really high quality and very quiet). but do you really want to overclock this CPU? 4GHz should be enough for almost everything.
i guess there are cheaper MBs than the Sabertooth.
8GB RAM usually is enough. AND i would buy low-profile RAM, the heatspreader of your modules can collide with custom CPU-coolers.

Brand means nothing on the PSU...it's all on who the builds it. Corsair's CWT is okay but in my experience their lower end PSUs have awful build quality. CWT has really good high end PSUs. SeaSonic is probably the best at every level and most companies actually use them to build their PSUs. Corsair has some solid ones but I don't like their lower end ones. I don't have a clue how good EVGA is but I like their other products. And yeah, you get bad lemons in every company but some are better at quality control than others.

I'm mostly looking to skim down budget on the RAM and motherboard. I'm going to keep a 980 because it has more OC potential than a 970. Will likely go to the ACX 2.0 that's not OCed and save $20 there. I think that G Series PSU would be enough juice to overclock the 980/4790k with plenty to spare. 980 doesn't really use that much energy at load. What's it at? 300-330? I suppose I could get rid of the optical drive and use the one in this PC. Any specific models of motherboards cheaper than the Sabertooth you guys would recommend? Sabertooth is nice but kinda seems overkill at that price. I see 16GBs at around $140 with CL 10 -- 1600 so that will save me another $20.

I have extra storage to go with the SSD but I need that SSD as I don't have one. The Samsung EVO apparently has a major bug with it right now and is more expensive.

I completely agree with your sentiment regarding the quality of the PSU rather than just Watt figures.

However, I would not dismiss the EVGA Supernova line of PSUs. They are essentially rebranded Superflower units and have shown exceptional performance in credible reviews like jonnyguru.com. SeaSonic does make very nice PSUs but there is slightly more value with the EVGA unit that comes with a 10 year warranty (once registered) and is basically the same price as the SeaSonic unit. The extra 100W does leave some headroom for adding another GPU or whatever in the future.

Does Nvidia have anything like Mantle? I hope they'll release a driver update to better optimise settings for DA:I when the game is released.

Nice to see that the recommended is 2GB :D

I'm not sure what Mantle is, but my Nvidia software searches for games and asks I want to optimize the settings for the games.  It found both "Skyrim" and "Shadow of Mordor" and optimized those.  To my surprise it popped my graphics settings up to ultra for SOM despite only having 3gb of vram (specs said it needed more vram for ultra).  That made no noticeable difference in game play for me.  Hope this helps.

Edit: I also believe that the specs need to be released to each of the mfg so they can create an optimized driver for a specific game.  I had SOm installed for two weeks before a driver update came out and optimized it.  Can anyone from Bioware confirm if this is accurate?

I bought an Acer laptop for school work and a little bit of gaming... around how well do you guys think it will play Inquisition? I know it can, with I think medium settings, but I want a second opinion.  It plays older games (Skyrim, Mass Effect, etc...) really well, and I'd rather wait a bit until I build my gaming PC. I'm a noob at this kind of thing still, so here are the specs.

  • Windows 8.1
  • Intel Core i5-4210U 1.70 GHz (Although it says that it can Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz)
  • 15.6" HD (1366 x 768) 16:9
