It amazes me how clueless some people are about their PCs and their specs.

There really is no need for this.

There are those that walk into a store and ask for a machine that will fit their needs at that point in time. They don't necessarily care for the details of each particular component just as long as the computer will do what it is they want.

Now they are simply trying to confirm whether or not their current computer can run DAI based on the released specifications.

I completely agree with your sentiment regarding the quality of the PSU rather than just Watt figures.

However, I would not dismiss the EVGA Supernova line of PSUs. They are essentially rebranded Superflower units and have shown exceptional performance in credible reviews like jonnyguru.com. SeaSonic does make very nice PSUs but there is slightly more value with the EVGA unit that comes with a 10 year warranty (once registered) and is basically the same price as the SeaSonic unit. The extra 100W does leave some headroom for adding another GPU or whatever in the future.

Does not look like Superflower made that unit. It's FSP who makes them.

http://www.realhardt...os/Page2293.htm

I'll stick with the G-Series for now. I don't think I'll have a problem overclocking on 550w of a powerful efficient unit like that.

Well then...I stand corrected :P

I personally have an the Supernova 850 G2 and also looked into the 750 G2. Saw the various Supernova reviews on jonnyguru and noted Superflower as the OEM on each of them. Naturally, the one unit that I didn't see is not made by Superflower and my assumption bit me in the rear lol.

Carry on...nothing to see here

Yeah, it's quite common they do this. That's why I use that website I linked above to know who made what. Like my Corsair PSU I have now everything in the lineup was made by CWT except the lone one I have here is made by SeaSonic. Corsair no longer uses SS though. I think it's for competitive reasons because they're much higher quality than CWT. I think CWT is probably more cost efficient for them and their work is okay.

I bought an Acer laptop for school work and a little bit of gaming... around how well do you guys think it will play Inquisition? I know it can, with I think medium settings, but I want a second opinion.  It plays older games (Skyrim, Mass Effect, etc...) really well, and I'd rather wait a bit until I build my gaming PC. I'm a noob at this kind of thing still, so here are the specs.

  • Windows 8.1
  • Intel Core i5-4210U 1.70 GHz (Although it says that it can Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz)
  • 15.6" HD (1366 x 768) 16:9
  • NVIDIA GeForce 840M with 2 GB Dedicated Memory
  • 8 GB, DDR3L SDRAM
  • 1 TB HDD

http://www.acer.ca/a...el/NX.MNKAA.001

The biggest issue is the CPU is dual core, not quad core but an i5 is still very capable.

At native resolution, I'd estimate medium settings at best but you could always drop it to low and/or reduce resolution. You can look at numbers here if you're interested, e.g. Shadow of Mordor, another intensive game runs at 27 fps on the exact same laptop as yours but with 4 GB RAM.

Just for comparison, my laptop's GPU, a Radeon 7730M, is worse than yours but I reckon I could get BF4/DAI to work.

Thank you dch2404! As a student, I'm always looking to save a little money and not having to invest in a gaming rig (as awesome as it would be) is probably not something I should do right now. Hopefully medium is enough for me XD ...Maybe I should stay a filthy casual and just buy a PS4/Xbox One.

From Twitter...

User

Does the quad-core minimum for DA:I mean it won't run on a 4-thread or 2-core CPU like an i3 or recent Pentium? Thanks.

Mark Darrah @BioMarkDarrah

it does have some issues on 2 cores but a high end dual core MIGHT do it. No guarantees.

one thing i didnt notice before that makes me very happy - only 26gb disk space required, thats tiny compared to the 2 55gb games i got this week...

I'm not sure what Mantle is, but my Nvidia software searches for games and asks I want to optimize the settings for the games.  It found both "Skyrim" and "Shadow of Mordor" and optimized those.  To my surprise it popped my graphics settings up to ultra for SOM despite only having 3gb of vram (specs said it needed more vram for ultra).  That made no noticeable difference in game play for me.  Hope this helps.

Mantle is an alternative to D3D developed by AMD and Dice(?). it reduces the CPU-overhead which makes your CPU "more powerful" compared to D3D. atm Nvidia doesnt have anything like Mantle, the software you mean is GeForce Experience. the only reason i use it is Shadow Play.

GPU should be good enough for medium settings in this resolution. CPU too, if the game "accepts" HT.

good to know that you were born as a PC-hardware expert
you dont seem to understand/realize that the most people just want their PC to work properly and therefore they dont need to know about all the hardware specs.

Ooh, PCPartPicker is fun to tool around on (even though I have no idea what I'm doing)

Total Base Price: $1115.89

Total Price After Discounts/Rebates$1079.90

This would run Dragon Age Inquisition and Assassin's Creed Unity (my two most anticipated games of the year) like a dream!

A friend of mine who builds computers as a hobby (and built my current rig) offered to walk me through upgrading it.

I think a new motherboard, CPU and more RAM would be more than enough :D

OK, it seems my laptop that to my knowledge doesn't meet the minimum CPU and GPU requirements can run BF4 on high settings just fine, and it's playable, albeit a bit laggy, even on ultra. I'm really not sure what to make of this.

Ok, I need a new laptop and am thinking of buying this one to run Inquisition based on the system requirements. Can anyone confirm that it should run Inquisition and maybe give me some advice on possible alternatives with better bang for the buck? Thanks!

  • Windows 8.1
  • Intel® Core™ i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz | Turbo Speed 3.5GHz
  • 1TB 5400RPM SATA hard drive & 128GB SSD
  • 12GB DDR3 Dual-Channel Memory
  • 15.6" Full HD Widescreen LED-backlit IPS Display
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 860M w/ 2GB GDDR5 VRAM
  • Backlit keyboard | Four built-in stereo speakers

ETA: Also, ignorant question, but is Intel® Core™ i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz a quad core?

If BF4 runs and is playable to your satisfaction then I would simply be happy with it and enjoy the game :) .

The minimum and recommended specs are a guideline for users but there are times when first hand experience with the game and hardware tell a slightly different story. Perhaps your specific components are in the upper percentile in terms of quality (aka the silicon lottery) and are performing above spec?

Hopefully, you will experience something similar with DAI!

That's what I want to think, but I'm scared this is just some kind of exception and DA:I won't work after all

That laptop should run DAI relatively comfortably - probably with a mix of high and medium settings depending on your preferences.

And yes the i7-4710HQ is a quad core.

I'm thinking the following combo:

Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.0

GeForce GTX 980

8 GB RAM

Should be enough to max out DA:I at 1080 p at 30 fps, no?

Thanks for the info! :) Not sure I want to mess with my CPU anyway.  I'm happy with what I have.

It should run DAI at significantly above 60fps at 1080p (like 100 as Osena109 says).

However, like many have suggested in this thread, the GTX 970 will give slightly less performance but for significantly less cost. It is a much better performance per dollar option.

both  gtx 970 and the gtx 980 can pull down  4k textures out of 1920x1080p screen so the  FPS should be insane like  80 to 100 fps

The DSR feature of the new Maxwell cards will affect the frame rate negatively. It is essentially a different approach to super sampling AA.

It really is intended for those older games that powerful GPUs max out easily (with power to spare) where the user can utilize DSR for much better details than one would otherwise get running at a straight 1080p resolution.

The not yet released MFAA feature of Maxwell will be better suited for newer demanding games.

Ah, I'm skimming the thread now. I'll look into the GTX 970, because it would be silly to waste money.

Also, if you are only intending to play games (web surf and low load productivity tasks) then going with an i5-4690K can save you some money too.

Although if you intend to create video content, stream and what not, then the hyperthreading of the 4790K will be better suited for those tasks.

In that case, a few months from now I'll just get the U2711.

I'm just swapping out parts of a very old PC (by modern standards) and I have not even remotely kept up to date on parts.
