I hope getting specializations will be like class quests in MMOs. It could put a person (or people) in the spotlight and make more NPCs have relevance with the plot and if they're interesting enough, they could be in the next DA like with Isabela.
Specilizations are earned in Inquisition

Specializations are no longer free like they were in DA2. In DA Fan's October 6th news update he says "There is a quest to get to the person who will teach your Inquisitor their chosen specialization." This means I may have to side with the Templar Order to unlock the Templar specialization.
Sorry mages. I want to help you guys out but if siding with the Templars is the only way for me to unlock the Templar specialization then the rebellion is officially over. May the maker have mercy.
Or maybe we learn it from Evangeline, just because a Templar is teaching us doesn't mean they are Pro Templar. It's possible for Templars to be pro-mage...

I'm actually glad that specializations aren't taught by followers, I'd be bummed to need vivienne for anything

I'd expect a Templar specialisation quest is probably more likely to be "Help us defeat this abomination that's eating people" than "Help us kill these adorable mage children!".
I don't think they'll want to restrict gameplay options too much.

Its of course a possibility that learning the Templar specialization won't force you to side with the Templars. But there's no way in heck Evangeline is going to be the one teaching you Templar specialization.
1.Evanageline has sided with the mages and isn't going to teach anyone Templar abilities to fight mages more effectively.
2. Evangeline is in the very heart of the mage rebellion with Rhys and is surrounded by other mages. Theres no way anyone who wants to be Pro Templar would even be able to get close to her without earning the mage's trust first.
