Well as the title says.

I'm in the tower of Ishal, first floor. I cleared the large central room with the burning barricades without much trouble.

But then you leave that room, pass through a small corridor and open another door. A bunch of enemies come out of it and you'r attacked from behind as well. I've been playing Theron as an archer and so far that worked. But here my party just gets overwhelmed and slaughtered in seconds.

I did level up things when possible and I also upgraded everyones weapons and armour with what I could loot/buy, so that's not the issue. I'm probably screwing it up with team management, I get so overwhelmed right away with fighting that I can't really do much else, and a few seconds later everyone is dead.

So, any tips for a noob, what am I doing wrong? I try to stay behind my team since they have melee weapons and I range. I tried a fighting retreat but that's not working either cause everyone dies so fast.

I should add that my Theron is level 5 atm. Is that about right or is that my problem, and if so where to raise it before going in.

Once you've cleared the main room, try the following approach :

1 Place everyone on hold so that they don't follow each other and draw back to the centre of the large room

2 Select your sword+shield character -probably Alistair, and send him to open the door

3 Get Alistair to draw the opposition back into the main room but not too close to you

4 Use the three remaining people to use distance attacks (arrows, spells, crosbows) - focusing on a single opponent at a time - it helps to spread your players out around the room

5 Make sure you monitor Alistair's health while he takes tha attacks and get him to use health potions if necessary

6 use pause regularly so you understand what is happening

Good luck

Umm.... I have to admit you got me stumped. I've never had a problem with the Tower on any difficulty. (What level are you playing it on.)  You and the mage need to hold back and let Al and the other guy open the doors that might help, Don't be too afraid to run and watch the health on Al and the Mage.

Hmmm I must then just be doing something wrong. I am only level 5, is that the problem?

The embarrasing fact is I'm on normal difficulty :P I'll have a look at using the environment better next time.

Thanks Thing the Wiz, I was trying something similar, I'll look into it more closely.

It doesn't have to do with character level then? F.e. I found fighting the Krogan and geth around Liara tough when I went there first, but much easier when I do it after, say, Feros.

Edit: I just gave it another try with my regular archer strategy and stomped the fight with ease. I think I fell back less than before this time, maybe that was it. they got me too scared with their numbers so I tried to get back to the previous room and that retreat got me killed. The fight went so fast this time I can't even tell you exactly what I did different. Next stop: the demon thingy at what I think is the end.

Lesson?: If you can't get through something, take a break and try again in a few hours :P

Alright: next up the demon. Guess I'll take a break since it's past 1am now:P I really need to learn the combat system better I think. Was pretty decent with the ME trilogy after a while, I'm sure I can get the hang of this too...

No, you should be at level 5 in the tower.

DA has a fairly steep learning curve, pay attention to the ability descriptions, and don't forget to set party member tactics (they have presets, but those are generally not what you want/expect).

Alright thanks for the tips. I just tried changing up tactics and stuff, and instead of a total roflstomp I now get him to half health. Call it progress.

I'll fiddle around with it some more, can't be that hard. I'm just overwhelmed with controlling 4 characters I guess :P

Yes, use tactics for party members.. and watch their health. I have a lot of DLC, so I can equip the tower guards/circle mage with better armor, weapons and accessories. Just remove them before you light the beacon.

Gotcha! What I probably did wrong was too little micromanaging the various teammembers' specials. Well, I think I just got a better feel for the game's combat system. Let's see what's next, thanks folks.

I have died a lot in the game. There are a few places I always got swamped. One is the side quest caravan down I think. I almost always die there, but manage to keep a couple of the party members alive to finish the job.

Another was that room in the broken circle right before meeting the Sloth Demon. There is a blood mage and a bunch of tough Templar's...

Another is the Alienage apartments meeting Devera. That battle is brutal. I had more trouble with her than I did Caladrius.

They do a pretty good job by themselves if you set up their tactics properly.

You will soon have the entire world map available for travel. A word of caution, while the enemies levels scale somewhat, most areas have a minimum level for them, so be careful where you travel to, or you can get killed rather quickly if you go to a high level area.

I just got past that large battle with the betrayal and everything, I now have a bunch of assignments to go do so I have reached that point. I'll just be careful with exploring then. It's probably wise to follow the missions at first.

Note that when you hit level 12, enemy archers and mages become significantly more dangerous as they receive high-end abilities - Scattershot and Curse of Mortality in particular.

That's good to know, thanks.

I'm currently level 7 and doing battle in Redcliffe. Looks like a long but fun fight ahead.

Well, I can see it ain't that much of a hard battle, but I still screw it up somehow, hahaha. Time for (even) more micro :)

Use the spacebar a lot to pause the game and give commands! That's the way to do it. :P

And there's no need to stay where you are ........... running away when you get overwhelmed is a tactic too. :D
