Personally I think it's all been downhill since Laidlaw took control creatively, basically DA2 onwards. Not a personal swipe at the guy I just think he has his own ideas about what makes a good game and they don't mesh so much with my own when it comes to Dragon Age, I guess you win some, you lose some in life.

They amuse me.

Well, no. The fan's reactions to the changes amuse. The changes themselves I could care less about.

I'll go ahead and comment but for the record, I don't think Bioware will really listen to feedback on the games until people have actually played it. That said I am good with what I've seen.

I must admit it's been interesting reviewing where Boware's come from. I mean people love to talk about Baldur's Gate, but I look at later games like Knights of The Old Republic, Jade Empire and Neverwinter nights and find it fascinating to consider all the ways Bioware has tried to improve their gameplay. KOTOR's gameplay was interesting but it's really the story and characters that kept me going throughout that adventure. Oh sure I had a momentary thrill when I finally got to use a Lightsaber in combat....but the gameplay was not anything to write home about. Jade Empire was a great idea....but come to early. Again combat never gelled and you really only had control of one character. Looking back on it....it either needed to play like The Arkham series or Sleeping Dogs.....The KH2 system also may have worked. Then we come to Neverwinter Nights....It was a great toolbox with an average story...and to give credit where it's due, the community really made that game.

Now...here we are again, a new game and a new combat system, and new lessons to learn. One way or another this should prove interesting.

I like it so far.

->Sweet necromancer class.

->Textures are amazing.

->Hair could use work.

->The idea of specializations adding a layer of reactivity.

->Customizable stronghold with banners.

->Return of playable races.

->Restricting me will give me the incentive to think more carefully about my builds

->I like the armor and crafting system

Pretty much spot on for how I feel aswell. Only thing missing is that I love the new mitigation mechanic. Wont miss healing at all. Kudos to bioware for trying something new and less boring.

to me character creation always seems to be lacking in the head hair and facial hair departments. i really like the new grid display for changing shapes tho. everything else looks good too. keeping it fresh(fighting mechanics wise) is always a good thing, otherwise stuff will seem stagnant. the new system will really make me thing ahead for sure.

yeah, that is my personal feelings as well. This started as far back as DAA.   If only Brent Knowles was still in that position, Yet we know why he ended leaving, since he knew what direction this series was going. Nothing against Laidlaw, i just think his ideas and likes dont mesh well with the DA franchise and what DAO was built upon.

Well heres my 2 cents.   I was sooo looking forward to this game back in spring and summer.. Post summer, every negative thing came at us all at once, with each change being worse than the last.

Good points

1. I do like that it is much more open world, even though it isn't technically.  I like the exploration and looking forward to getting lost in it, however there is a negative to this as well which I will put on the bad list.

2. I do like the crafting system. It seems it will be much more better than what we have been given.

3.Graphics look good, but this is minor for me.. I always feel that graphics should be the least worried about when it comes to games. Now art design is something else. DAO had the best, DA2 was too cartoony. DAI looks much more appeasing.

Bad points

1. Ugly companions. None really look that appealing and some like Sera, Dorian and Cole espessially, make me want to vomit.

2. Love interests suck and soo disappointed in the skewed ratio, comments from bioware employees reasoning make me question their views on equality.

3. Keeping the bad stuff from DA2.  The dialogue wheel sucks.  The handholding sucks.  The animations are too cartoony and exactly the same move for move. And the biggest of all... Weapon restrictions.

4. Animations.. its just too flashy.. too much color. Every move, even basic ones have purple or red outlines. When everyone is unloading abilities, the aoe of the flash is just way too much. You cannot see where people are or what is going on half the time. Big smoke clouds, large barrier type Aoes, its all just too much. which brings me to the next negative

5.Lack of healing.  Here is the tricky one. Not sure how well this will be.. but because of open world and amount of enemies, this could lead to  tedious running back to camp to heal and restock.. If it is such a case, that will suck TREMENDOUSLY.   This coincides with the previous. If I cant see where people are or what I am doing due to the flash, how can i minimize being hit?

6.This is minor and nitpicky but the character icon protraits suck... and there isnt even a portrait for our inquisitor? how lazy is that?  and character selection screen is just cards now? cant even put a proper one up, showing our characters like DAO and DA2???

7. In addition to weapon restrictions, now we have only armor and head slots.. really?   Oh but that isn't enough, now we have to be restricted to 8 ability slots.. Oh but wait there is more.. no more allocating stat points.. So they decided to take soo much player choice away and now we cant even assign stats points?....

Really its just more and more disappointing to be honest..  This just doesnt look or feel like a dragon age game anymore aside from certain characters.. It may be better than DA2, but that doesnt take much, but the story, which is the only real unknown wont make up for all the negatives I listed, to even come close to how good DAO was.

But...we have an Icon. The universal pretty Green/Orange hand.

Do you mean a portrait?

Yes, I mean a protrait. I'll edit it.

After the last weeks i think I can imagine what are BW doing so:

1. 8 abilitys? - notz big at the deal for me, i mean so you have to look what tactic you will go and take the skills its ok

2. Attributoints not given to the player himself.. hm thats could be anouying but it is just a little thing

3. lack of healing... I'm happy it is so... sick of always need a healer hope for interesting gameplay (in DAO I never have used one)

4. Big World? just great

5. Animations. could be more realistic too flashy but thats just one point that disturbs me in this francise after DAO was more realistic

6. Crafting. One thing i could fall in love with

7. Harder Battles? Yes why not, Im shure BW has balanced it to be possible

8. CC: looks great... just one thing... the hair.. looks freakin horrible at some points

so Im lookin forward to this game it seems to be a very new feeling while playing, so I will judge it by playing not before

The simplification of skills is my only major disappointment.

3/4 elemental spell trees for the mage? Way to trash your own unique lore.

praise be the lore!

I'm kidding.  I think lore is important but I do have some ability to separate gameplay from story (just a bit) and that isn't immersion breaking for me.

The lore I am more concerned and excited about is what is going to happen with the story?  How are the spirits and demons presented in the story?

Honestly, apart from the disgusting, atrocious, and horrific hair textures, I'm completely okay with the game. The no healing thing is questionable, but I'm looking forward to seeing how challenging it can be and I'm really hoping it won't be a cakewalk.

Exploration-wise I'm a bit disappointed that it looks like we'll always need at least one rogue, one mage and one warrior to complete certain quests. But this is offset by the new ways each class is able to interact with the environment, which is a pretty fun-looking addition.

Combat-wise I'd prefer abilities to be selectable on the radial wheel, but I suppose tactical cam wouldn't work too well with that. And tactical cam is great so it's a fair trade.

Cinematically, I'd rather all conversations were in cutscenes. But I suppose the new style means we might get more conversations overall, since they don't each need a new cutscene tailor-made for them.

In terms of leveling I'd rather each of the companions had their own unique specialization as in DA2. I don't like having the PC share their specialization with another party member. Though it's balanced out by the fact that we get story quests for each specialization.

As far as healing, attribute allocation and some CC hair options are concerned, I'm not too worried. The CC looks incredible to me and I'll have to play the game before I make up my mind on healing and attributes.

I like the removal of (most) healing magic. There is then less pressure to have a designated healer mage companion in the party, thereby allowing more practical freedom to have more varied party makeups.

Most of the changes I am actually looking forward to but am a bit nervous about to.  Long and short I will have to play it and see if I can master the system and see if they make it too much like Skyrim.  But overall I am looking forward to the changes in combat, the limited healing, the addition of a tactical camera for all platforms, and the addition of specializations.

The one thing that I am most unamused about is the whole thing about non assignable points on level up.  Its not game breaking for me, I came from Mass Effect originally and ME was the first RPG I ever played, and that game did not have a system so its not a big deal.  But, I did feel it was really nice and unique in DA the ability for your character to do that.  Especially for my DA 2 rogue where I unlocked Assassin/ pinpoint strikes which gave me one hundred percent critical chance, so I dumped a lot of her points into the critical damage stat (dex I think?) so she was doing massive amounts of damage even with the basic attacks.  Though it was a pain in the butt when it was done.

Bottomline, I am looking forward to it.

Gameplay =/= Lore.

You silly sods.

On Topic, I'm alright with the changes. That's pretty much it.

Thank you for stating the obvious.

The "gameplay =/= lore" excuse doesn't do much to counter the fact that BioWare created four unique spell schools that were utilized in both previous games (yes, in the gameplay), of which only two are now being used, and in place of the other missing schools are cookie cutter elemental trees (ie. Primal expanded). Ergo, they're simultaneously forgoing their own established and flavorful lore, and simplifying the gameplay by making the mage like every other archetypical fantasy mage class.

The other schools seem present to some degree (Creation mixed in with Spirit? Entropy in the Necromancer specialization?), but it's still an idiotic move to me to intentionally make your game less flavorful by expanding elemental trees at the expense of spell schools that were actually unique to your series.

You have armor, helmet, gloves, boots, weapon, shield, rings and amulet right? The new crafting system would be pretty pointless if your crafting options (excluding jewelry and weapons) would only allow you to customize 2 armor items/slots.

I knew I shouldn't have used the term "lore," because whenever someone does you get ten people jumping at it to clarify that "lore isn't gameplay!"

My point was both previous games had a whole spell tree for each of the four primary schools of magic established in the lore.

DA:O = Arcane. Primal, Creation, Spirit, Entropy

DAII = Elemental, Primal, Spirit, Arcane, Creation, Entropy

DA:I = Storm, Winter, Inferno, Spirit

Storm, Winter, and Inferno are essentially Primal spread out across three trees. Meaning both previous games had 4/4 of the schools of magic established in official lore, in the base spell trees (ie. not specializations), and DA:I has 2/4.

Basically they've removed unique and flavorful spell trees in favor of more mundane, typical elemental skills.

I am pretty exicted, actually. My only fear is that the Barrier-ability is going to feel too Mass Effect-y in the DA franchise, but since it's a strategic resourse and not a constant ability, I have a feeling that won't be the case.

All in all, I'm not very worried. The fact that usable abilites have been capped at 8 is slightly worrying, but to be honest, I'm more intriqued as to how it's going to affect my playstyle. In DA:O in particular it was wise to choose a couple powerful situational spells (like Mana Clash, Blizzard, Tempest) which you rarely used in regular fights but which would just obliterate bosses/mobbs when you used them at the right time. In the new system, I'll have to make most of the 8 slots I have, and having rarely used (although powerful) heavily situational talents there sounds like a bad idea.

But since I haven't actually played the game yet it's going to be hard to make any definitive judgements. I've really enjoyed what I've seen so far, all in all. I've also been sceptical or some stuff (missing healing spells, talent limit etc.) but I've liked the combat we've seen so far, and it looks really engaging. But when I finally play it, I might end up loving it or hating it... or more probably, I'll end up missing some abilities, talents etc., and like some of the new mechanics better than what was in DA:O and DAII.

But we'll see in a bit over a month.

Some stuff i seriously don't like, but it's not a deal breaker so far.  I'll probably attempt at least one playthrough.  More than that, I don't know.

It's not like I can affect what is in the game anyway, only my own perspective and enjoyment of it, so I've decided to adopt a "Wait and see" outlook on it.  Starting out on any game, Easy was already difficult enough for me.  I'm hoping the learning curve isn't too steep.

*The inability to unequip weapons is a great immersion-breaker. Gear - as I said - is NOT part of a character.

:blink: ....  :huh: ....  :wacko: ....  :blink:     what?

<Shakes head to clear out>

...Anyway.

In short, I'd characterize my reactions, sofar, as that, I like most things the developers says, but that each released gameplay video looks more everything-I-hated-about-DA2-on-stereoids than the last.

If I understood everything correctly you do have all those different slots, but you have to change gloves and boots during crafting (so you don't equip those separately). Someone correct me if I'm wrong please! :D
