I'm so glad that instead of creepy freakshows - they're kinda going with esoteric morticians who revere the dead.

Certainly - the creepy freakshow - is available, but I'm just glad they seem to be taking a slightly different approach to a tired archetype.

And the implications for dead souls on Thedas has been put to rest with this Specialization.  Can't attract a dead Mortilassi soul - if souls didn't exist.

Well everyone else might not think that way, they must be ZOMG the inquisitor/herald a necromancer!? Disturbing the dead!? Defiling them!? Oh and lets not forget working with spirits who may possibly be demons. Even if the Mortalitasi hold great respect while doing their art.

I think a necromancer play through is going to be interesting.

@Bigdoser:  Oh, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying other NPCs wouldn't find it creepy.

I just can't stand snarly, nasty grimdark emo necromancers.

"If" I play a necromancer - my headcanon is that the gardens of Skyhold (there is a garden) will be where he spends his downtime and he supports life as much as he supports death.

Plus spending time chatting with your little skull mentor. :D

I hope I can play up the necromancer angle of my inquisitor when exploring friendship with Cole. I planned already for her to have a rather excellent one with him, but if she deals in spirits, maybe she's a bit more open-minded from the get-go about his situation.

I'm hoping the necromancer angle will be how I actually get 'into' Cole. Out of all the companions, he interests me the least.

Origins style raise skeleton would be nice. Having it gain abilities based on the corpse used would open some interesting tactical options, like using tower shield skely for tanking and going full dps on our warriors.

@KoorahUK; My inquisitor has a personality that suits Cole as her best buddy. I've planned for her to look to Cole's endless faith in doing good without benefit to renew her own desire to serve others. To shake her out of a very unproductive disillusionment with humanity and get her into the 'spirit' of good will and self-sacrifice. I hope something in him sparks your interest too.

Unrelated: I hope we can learn that trick Yavana used in the comics to bind a just departed soul to a corpse. Its the closest thing we have to resurrection in DA isn't it?

Based on the skill chain how many possible spells will we get? Safe to assume that dorian will be needed on the required quests

I counted 9 for the Knight Enchanter.  I'm assuming Necro and Rift mages are identical in count.

We know we at least 3 of the Necromancer's spells: summon spirit, walking bomb and fear.

Most of the specialist trees seem to have 3 or 4 activitated abilities and 4 or 5 passives plus a few upgrades.

@Shapeshifter777:  I assume you're pulling that off the Necromancer description.

I hope "Fear" is:  Horror - or Curse of Mortality - or Waking Nightmare... something like that.

That is from the description, yes.  I'm not sure exactly what the name of the fear spell is, but whatever it is puts the fear of death into your enemies.  I'm assuming it makes them flee.

Yeah that's similar to how I would play a Necromancer.  He uses the powers because they fascinate him, but he finds life just as fascinating.  He's a curious soul who wants to explore the limits of his powers, but not go over the bounds, like with blood magic.

Yes, I would like at least one debuff with Necro - Fear won't be needed should I hit up Inferno / Barrier combo. A Root could work. If I was building the Magic Skill Trees I would make at least one spell completely new, not Dnd inspired or from previous game.. something creative and almost bizarre. As much as I want some sort of Vampiric Drain that turns Orlesians into husks, a spell straight outside of the box would be prefered.

I have a question about something I was wondering about Necromancers. Are most Necromancers seen in an 'evil' aspect? I would like to play a "good"/"diplomatic" Necromancer Mage at some point just to break from the norm. I was just wondering how people will play/view the specialization.

Hmm, that description of this ceremonial Mortalitasi skull was intriguing in terms of how this specialization is going to work. Although I normally prefer to stick to pew-pewing with fire/ice/lightning (a LOT), this is actually sounding more and more interesting to me.

The lore concerning the reverence of the dead by the Mortalitasi is seriously reminding me of a Jedi concept I played years ago in a forum rp and I love it.

Master Saigaer, time for me to brush off your old charsheet and go save Thedas! :D

I do really hope we get a cut scene with us conversing with the skull. I am quite curious about their culture and how they view spirits. (also including demons since I view them as the same kind of entity)

I love Necromancy, going to use that spec for my first playthrough. I'm looking forward to finding out more details about the spells involved, I can't wait to see each spell animation.

@Bigdoser; So far, this what we know about the Mortalitasi.

From WoT, "Nevarrans believe that when a soul crosses the Fade at death, it displaces a Fade spirit. Caspar Pentaghast's personal adviser, a Tevinter mage named Vitus Fabria, founded the Mortalitasi order of mages and first preached the idea. The Mortalitasi believe mummifying corpses to keep them intact provides a safe host for the displaced Fade spirits.

The mummified corpses are placed in massive, elaborate tomb, and the grandest of these come complete with gardens, bathhouses, and ballrooms. Wealthy Nevarrans begin construction on their own tombs while young, and add to them as they grow older. Outside of Nevarra City stands the Grand Necropolis. It appears almost as a city in itself, complete with mansions and great palaces, although it is utterly silent and kept only for the dead. It is common for nobles to take Mortalitasi adviser, and rumors persist of noble involvement in secret necromantic cults. Outside of Nevarra, inflated stories of ancestor worship and obsession with the dead have become Nevarran stereotypes."

---

"In Nevarra mages have more power than those in most Chantry-controlled nations. They are well organized, wealthy, and hold political sway. Nevarran mages push the boundaries of what magic can do and are arguably the most well schooled mages outside Tevinter. Among the special aspects of magic practice in Nevarra is the secretive Mortalitasi order. These mages are experts in the art of mummification, a burial practice unique to Nevarran culture. The order studies death extensively, and its members are known to experiment with necromancy. Members of the order rarely leave Nevarra. While they are well respected within the kingdom, mages outside the nation's borders fear them. Propaganda perpetuates the belief in some that the Mortalitasi are actually a death cult who carry out macbre rituals in the catacombs of their Grand Necropolis."

---

"My tenure as ambassador to the Nevarran court began, appropriately enough, with a death. I arrived to find my predecessor and intended mentor, Sifas Carrenter, had died in his sleep. Not unexpecetd, given his age. Instead of a cremation, the Mortalitasi were summoned for him, those gray-robed mages who seem to be everywhere in the palace. I was warned of the Mortalitasi in Starkhaven. Some cautioned me about their political prowess, learned from sitting at the feet of kings for generations. Others talked about the Mortalitasi like they were ghoulish surgeons in leather aprons, exhuming bodies by moonlight in their Grand Necropolis. The Mortalitasi who spoke to me was a polite, tawny-haired woman who smelled strongly of soap. She explained that Carrenter had earned the honor of being preserved and interred in the Necropolis. It seems a barbaric practice, but I knew that demanding a cremation would have made me - and more importantly, Starkhaven - lose face in Nevarra. Instead, my thanks seemed to please her. She described some of their rites. Though she wouldn't speak of the greater mysteries, even a glimpse into their arts put my hair on end. But I held my peace. The Mortalitasi are linked to the throne by blood. If I die in my office, like Carrenter, my body will be in their hands. In a land where death and politics are intertwined, one should be polite."

-- Galen Vedas, Starkhaven ambassador to Nevarra, 9:6 Dragon.
