He is also the obvious choice for people who's believes he's going to be a better ruler than Celene. The obvious choice for people who's believes that Celene is weak and incompetent since TME. It doesn't have anything to do with people want to kill Celene alone.

Err, I didn't mean anything else by my comment. I'm just saying he makes an obvious scapegoat. The scapegoat doesn't have to hold up to scrutiny long either, just long enough for an escape to be made.

Oh, that is funny. In TME, Gaspard is incredibly naive to think he just needs to oust Celene, and then Orlais will be united and everything will be fine. There will still be rebels and loads of drama. A full-on civil war would put Orlais in a weak position for Thedas, the Quanari, or the Tevinter Empire to attack as well. Celene wants peace, but Gaspard keeps pushing for a civil war and putting Orlais into a more dangerous situation, while his entire goal is a stronger Orlais. He is shooting Orlais in the foot, IMO.
I would go for allowing Celene assassination. I don't know if I would choose Briala or Gaspard. Both have faults and qualities. I wonder, will we be able to kill Celene without screwing Gaspard in the process? And I also wonder what Morrigan reaction would be to all of this...

Whoops, my mistake then. I apologize.

Well that's happen in the middle of the Ball but you'll learn who's the real culprit and manage to ruin her plan in motion. The Assassin reveal herself right before she about to kill Celene. I think that's remove false flag on Gaspard. She's smart enough to pin the blame on Gaspard however since he make a convenient scapegoat. I think her plan has one flaw though if I were Gaspard why would I leave a dagger with my symbol on it so people will know it was me, it doesn't make any sense if he's plotting to kill Celene in the Ball and want to walk out as innocent. If you pay attention to what happen in the mission you'll know.
Does Gaspard ever spread rumors in the game that Celene and Briala had a relationship? In TME, he had his lackeys put on a play about Orlais sleeping with elves, when he didn't even know that Celene and Briala were actually in a relationship.

This thread is about Celene and talks about TME ... I'd imagine people wouldn't click this thread if they don't want to know anything about her. It's pretty well known she was with Briala... the back of the book says it.

Anyways, do we get to ask about their relationship in the game? Or how do we find out?
Here is the information about the Orlesian Ball level I manage to gather so far. Please don't click the spoiler tag below if you want your experience of DAI unspoiled.

*Story Aspect*
Note that this is before the Orlesian Ball level ended, in that run the Inquisitor choose to save Celene. The stream cut off as the Inquisitor chasing the Assassin.
- Gaspard is the person who sends you an invitation to the Ball. He will then convince the Inquisitor to support him and his claim to the throne. - Both Celene and Briala will also convince the Inquisitor to support their cause as well. - The Inquisition is there to search for Corypheus's agent not involved themselves with Orlesian political affairs. - Throughout the level you'll investigate for clue and the culprit who want to start a chaos in Orlais. - Celene and Briala did not seek each other out during the Ball. - You'll meet Josephine's sister in the Ball. She is the opposite, while Josephine is earnest and serious when it comes to work, her sister is talkative, enjoying rumors about the Inquisitor, playful and childish. - Cassandra is very impatience and blunt, she has "Let's just get this over with, I had enough of this Orlesian nonsense" attitude during the Ball. - There are a couples of fando- *cough* random people stalking Cullen during the Ball. -Viviene has something to talk about Orlesian and their masks. - Morrigan will help you searching for the Assassin. (It seems like most nobles in the court distrust her and believe that she's manipulating Celene.) - All of yours advisors have their own opinion and preferences about the Orlesian's political figure. Josephine favors Celene, believing she has the rightful claim to the throne. Leliana favors Briala, and believing that supporting her will do the good for the Elves in Orlais. Cullen favors Gaspard, believing he's the man best suited to handle the crisis and deal with the Breach. (Much to my surprise Leliana suggesting that the player can allow Celene assassination.) - The Assassin will attempt to plant a false flag on Gaspard, blaming him but the Inquisitor and his team can keep this knowledge to themselves before proceed to search for the real culprit. - You will foil the Assassin's plan in motion, and this assassin will reveal herself and who she's working for right before killing Celene. You can choose to intervene and saving Celene or not intervene and let Celene die. - There is no "Screw those Orlesians or Kill everyone" option. You will be forced to choose one from these three to keep Orlais in stable state. (I'm not sure if it's possible to gain support from all three.)
*Gameplay Aspect*
- It's very likely that Celene will give you more political power and connection, while Briala give you her Elven spy and streghten your clandestine division, Gaspard will pledge you his military support. - If the player is an Elf or Qunari you'll automatically gain disapproval from the court at the beginning. (-5 approval from the court.) - If you wish to earn the Orlesian's court approval you'll have to pick playful/humorous/charming dialogue. A blunt dialogue will decrease the approval. You can also help several npcs in the court with their own task to gain the approval. If the player gone from the sight for too long you'll lose the approval. - You cannot dance with your LI in the Ball, but you can tease them about it. (I'm disappointed, BioWare.)

Don't blame me for being cautious.
Spoiler
The guy playing through this level in the stream didn't bother talk to these politcal figure much, and I don't see the option popping out. I don't think neither Celene or Briala wish to talk about their secret relationship though.
I wonder what happens if you choose Briala. What happens to Gaspard and Celene? Hopefully we can choose both Briala and Celene. Wouldn't Celene be able to give her army too?

You're welcome.

I wonder that myself. The same could be said for Gaspard able to give you political power and connection since he has nobles support. I think this is where it's boiled down to gameplay aspect, but lorewise I think Celene has more political power, as well as her own army while Gaspard has more military power, and the bulk of chevalier and some political power.
Does Gaspard ever spread rumors in the game that Celene and Briala had a relationship? In TME, he had his lackeys put on a play about Orlais sleeping with elves, when he didn't even know that Celene and Briala were actually in a relationship.
If I recall, he didn't know of it and just started a rumor that Celene and Briala were lovers (the play with Andraste and Shartan as lovers drove Celene to march on Halamshiral) and was quite surprised by it when he learned it was true. As for continuing to spread that rumor in game, I don't see the point as Briala already is separated from Celene and has her own faction to fight in the Civil War.

Another embarrassment for Celene... to react so predictably to a mere feeler that Gaspard sent out. He didn't even know they were together and she massacres a bunch of elves over it. Pathetic.

Did anyone find Celene's characterization with hints of anti-religious/anti-Chantry sentiment in The Masked Empire?
...mild TME spoilers...
A joke is mentioned about Andraste, and later Celene tells Michel after he says he can guard the area, "I believe I will be safe in the bosom of Andraste." I think she was being funny/sarcastic then.
In her conversation with Leliana, she refers to the Divine as Dorothea, much to Leliana's disliking, as it is sacrilegious to refer to the Divine as her first name. Celene also seemed annoyed by the bureaucratic religious process of The Chantry. She also states that the former Divine did nothing about the last templars vs mages crisis because she "waited and prayed while Kirkwall tore itself apart." Basically, Celene was saying that praying doesn't do ****.
Celene is a progressive and liberal voice in Thedas. She cares more about progressing society with education and books, and less about conquering the next nation. Although her views aren't as progressive as Briala's, she does believe the elves should have some rights in Orlais, though she believes implementing those plans slowly and not immediately, like how Briala wants.
I just find this interesting of her character. Most leaders in Thedas are devoutly religious or really into the magic philosophy, so it's cool to have a character in power with unique views.

That's a bit over-the-top for Leliana, but she must have been really offended when Celene referred to the Divine as her first name.

You know...Here's where I completely agree with the vocal anti-Celene club/Gaspard fan club. I believe Celene looks into what will keep order in her Empire, and thus she doesn't want the tension between mages and Templars/elves and humans to increase.
But as far as championing the Elves go, I don't think she personally cares much beyond the benefit of pleasing Briala. That she only does it to "keep her pet happy". What's right and wrong, or golden-rule-ish about these causes never cross her mind. And it seems like she'll only champion them insofar as it stabilizes the Empire.

Gaspard = badass, should have been on the throne since the beginning (if Celene wasn't resposible for murdering her freaking lovers parents Gaspard would be on the throne), he also has his faults but since he wasn't Emperor yet we can't say for sure
Celene= hypocritical, has the audacity to demand loyalty even though she screwed everyone over (Briala especially, finds out Celene basically killed her parents, Celene still wants her to remain loyal and even her lover), has been Empress for way too long, not loyal to anything or anyone whatever suits her goals

Gaspard=Murdering Warmonger with a hypocritical sense of honor that only applies to certain situations while allowing great travesties in others who will kill thousands of people and no real long-term vision. His long-term plan seems to be "Invade Ferelden and hope it unites the nobility."
Celene=hypocritical empress who's word cannot be trusted and feels no sense of guilt for atrocities she's committed in the past, and has shown a willingness to commit genocide to protect her reputation, but does have a long-term vision and seems to be working towards maintaining order.
Both suck
