Celene is a progressive and liberal voice in Thedas. She cares more about progressing society with education and books, and less about conquering the next nation. Although her views aren't as progressive as Briala's, she does believe the elves should have some rights in Orlais, though she believes implementing those plans slowly and not immediately, like how Briala wants.

 

I don't see her as progressive and liberal. She's merely more of what's come before. She's a more-than-willing player of the cancerous, circular Orlesian game, fails to bring about any real progression or change for the elves she claims to care about, and is a cold-blooded manipulator and murderer who seeks power. I agree that she's less about conquering other nations and more about selfishly keeping her butt on the throne.

No, she's not progressive or liberal, according to our modern day standards, but in Thedas, she is. Thedas is stuck in very old times with conquering nations, and the idea of a ruler heavily interested in higher education is a progressive feat itself.

 

As far as Celene concerns herself with the elves, she still supports them to an extent, and that's a very liberal movement for a human in high power to openly support elves. Her reasoning for supporting elves is flawed, but she still wants to support them, and it ultimately would be progress for the elves.

 

Ahhh, the game is nearly here, and I don't want to hear anymore spoilers. DDDD:!!!

 

lol I want Briala and Celene back together too, as screwed up as it is. But I would say their relationship is done.

I don't think it was like that at all. I'll be reserving my judgement for what happens in game. Especially considering the wide difference in opinion between readers of the masked empire, I wouldn't be surprised if I had a different view of events in the game.
